Kenzan! guide: all 18 picture revelations, where to find them and the answers
Kenzan's revelations are worth doing as you go. You watch something ridiculous happen, Musashi gets an idea, and that turns into another way to deal with somebody in a fight. Finding the scene is only part of it, though. You also need the right picture, the right time of day, the button sequence and the correct answer afterward.
This covers all 18 picture revelations in the original PS3 game. The training revelations are separate: four come from Komaki's dojo, and six are tied to mental training. They aren't missing from this list.
Before you start
Get the picture first. Visiting the right animal or person without its picture will not start the revelation. Shichigoro supplies most of them, but several come from requests or other people. Some of his pictures require a particular level, so reaching the listed chapter isn't always enough.
The chapter listed below is the earliest chapter in which the scene becomes available, not a promise that you can do it the instant that chapter starts. Finish the relevant story section, obtain its picture and meet the time requirement.
The answer numbers refer to the choices from top to bottom. The button sequences below are for learning the revelation. Some learned moves have a separate button sequence when you actually use them in combat.
If you miss a button or choose the wrong answer, leave the area and come back. You can retry. You haven't permanently lost the move.
1. Secret Sword: Sly Cat
Available: Chapter 5, day, evening or night.
Picture: Playful Cat, from Shichigoro.
Where: The Inari shrine grounds in Gion. Look on the eastern side of the little shrine area, past the torii gate and southeast of the save point.
Buttons: X.
Answer: First choice, the observation about the cat acting casually with its prey behind it.
The move uses a single sword against an enemy approaching from behind. Learning it and using it are separate completion steps, so remember to try the move in a fight afterward.
2. Shortsword: Twin Bones
Available: Chapter 5, day or evening.
Picture: Dog, from Shichigoro at level 15 or higher.
Where: The dog in southwestern Rakugai. Check the junction just northeast of the southwestern exit, near the save point and south of the theatre area.
Buttons: Triangle.
Answer: Third choice, about working with two bones and the two-sword style.
For the combat move, equip a shortsword in the Other slot and bait an attack from somebody carrying a real sword. A wooden sword does not meet that requirement.
3. Secret Sword: Dancing Mouse
Available: Chapter 5, day or evening.
Picture: Flying Squirrel, from Shichigoro after Sly Cat.
Where: Forest Road, at the fork where the short northern branch meets the main east-west path. Look for the flying squirrel scene rather than continuing all the way through the road.
Buttons: X, Triangle.
Answer: Third choice, about getting distracted by something in the air.
Use a single sword, keep some distance from your target and hold lock-on for the Heat prompt. Later, Angry Bull uses a similar setup without lock-on, so pay attention to which move you're trying to perform.
4. Certain Death: True Two-Sword Dance
Available: Chapter 5, day or evening.
Picture: Beautiful Woman, the reward from request 18.
Where: The woman by the well in Gion. The location is in the northwestern part of the district, in the open yard north of the nearby save point.
Buttons: Triangle, Square, Circle.
Answer: Third choice.
Use the two-sword style near two armed enemies. Two unarmed men won't do, and this isn't a boss-fight substitute. Find an ordinary group carrying swords and let two of them get close enough together.
5. Strong Sword: Monkey Flip
Available: Chapter 5, any time.
Picture: Monkey, from Shichigoro at level 17 or higher.
Where: The theatre on Rakugai's western side, north of the southwestern junction. Watch the Leaping Monkey show.
Buttons: X, Triangle.
Answer: Second choice.
If you need theatre access, order at White Snake Udon repeatedly; the theatre-ticket reward is tied to four orders. Once you have the picture, use the appropriate show for the revelation.
The learned move is a greatsword counter against a sword attack. Carry the right weapon rather than expecting it to appear while fighting with two swords.
6. Certain Death: Hopping Cat
Available: Chapter 5, any time.
Picture: Sleeping Cat, from Shichigoro at level 18 or higher.
Where: Kiyomizudera. Check the sleeping cat on the eastern side of the temple platform, southeast of the save point.
Buttons: Triangle, Triangle.
Answer: Second choice.
Equip two swords and run toward an enemy from a little distance to bring up the combat opportunity. Starting already pressed against the target won't give you the same approach.
7. Strong Sword: Mechanical Spin
Available: Chapter 6, any time.
Picture: Clock Blueprint. Buy it for 2,000 mon from the man inside Ebisuya.
Where: The inventor's workshop in northeastern Gion, near the eastern end of the upper street.
Buttons: Circle, Triangle, X, Square, Circle.
Answer: Third choice.
This one needs a full Heat gauge in combat. Use a greatsword or club and stand close to an enemy. Buying the blueprint is part of this revelation; it isn't one of Shichigoro's pictures.
8. Secret Sword: Swallow's Dance
Available: Chapter 6, day or evening.
Picture: Swallow, from Shichigoro.
Where: Kawara Street. Look along the western stretch of the horizontal street, away from the eastern junction.
Buttons: Square, Triangle, X.
Answer: Third choice.
The combat move needs height. With a single sword, drop toward an enemy below you. River Road and Mountain Road have suitable encounters with changes in elevation. Trying it on flat ground will just waste your time.
9. Secret Sword: Rising Fish
Available: Chapter 6, day or evening.
Picture: Fish, from Shichigoro.
Where: The fisherman on River Road. Look at the water's edge on the western side of the path, below the nearby tree and fishing spots.
Buttons: Triangle.
Answer: Second choice.
To use it, equip a single sword and roll toward an enemy. That rolling approach is the important part of the setup.
10. Secret Sword: Silent Snake
Available: Chapter 7, evening or night.
Picture: Snake, from Shichigoro.
Where: Forest Road, at the same fork used for the flying squirrel revelation. Check the ground there during the correct time window.
Buttons: Triangle, Circle.
Answer: First choice.
Use a single sword and leave some distance between yourself and an enemy who is stunned or getting up. Ordinary enemies are the sensible targets here; it isn't a boss move.
11. Certain Death: Great Serpent Maelstrom
Available: Chapter 7, day or evening.
Picture: Poorly Drawn Yamata no Orochi, from request 53.
Where: The picture storyteller in Rakugai. Look near the eastern end of the street that meets the main north-south road, beside the save point shown in that area.
Buttons: X, Triangle, Circle, Triangle, X, Square.
Answer: Second choice.
This uses the two-sword style close to an enemy and consumes 12,000 Heat. If the move will not appear, check your available Heat rather than assuming the revelation failed.
12. Secret Sword: Death by Black Kite
Available: Chapter 7, day or evening.
Picture: Black Kite, from Shichigoro.
Where: The birdwatcher on Mountain Road. Look at the junction where the southwestern approach meets the northbound route.
Buttons: Circle, Triangle.
Answer: Second choice.
It is a single-sword counter. Let an enemy carrying a sword begin an attack, then use the opportunity instead of repeatedly rushing in with your own combo.
13. Shortsword: Swirling Death
Available: Chapter 8, day or evening.
Picture: Swirling Dragon, from the old man at the Riverside Tea House.
Where: The children outside the Riverside Tea House, immediately north of the building.
Buttons: Triangle.
Answer: Third choice.
Equip a shortsword and approach an enemy who is guarding. The guard is the condition you need; knocking the enemy down first changes the situation and removes that setup.
14. Certain Death: Clear Circle
Available: Chapter 9, day or evening.
Picture: Meditating Monk, from request 75.
Where: The dog in southwestern Rakugai, near the same junction as Twin Bones. Check just east of the save point, northeast of the southwestern exit.
Buttons: Circle, Triangle, Square, X, Circle.
Answer: Third choice.
This is another two-sword move that needs maximum Heat. Stand at a distance, hold R1 and use Triangle to start the Heat Action, then press X, Square, Triangle, Circle, X. That is the combat sequence, not the revelation sequence above. A mistake can spend your Heat without finishing the technique. Successfully perform it in battle to record the Heat-action entry.
15. Strong Sword: Fly Swatter
Available: Chapter 9, day or evening.
Picture: Fly, from request 85.
Where: The man at Yoshioka Dojo, by the small building south of the main courtyard. He is east of the save point, not out on the road beyond the dojo.
Buttons: Triangle, Triangle, Triangle.
Answer: Third choice.
Use a greatsword against an enemy whose back is against a wall. Move the fight toward a wall before looking for the prompt.
16. Certain Death: Bull Horns
Available: Chapter 9, day or evening.
Picture: Charging Bull, from Shichigoro at level 25 or higher.
Where: A farmer in the Farms area, in the field north of the river bend.
Buttons: X, Triangle.
Answer: Second choice.
The combat setup uses two swords. Put an enemy carrying a sword or greatsword against a wall, then use the Heat opportunity.
Do this before Angry Bull. Learning it unlocks the next picture from Shichigoro.
17. Secret Sword: Angry Bull
Available: Chapter 9, day or evening, after Bull Horns.
Picture: Raging Bull, from Shichigoro after learning Bull Horns.
Where: Another farmer in the Farms area. This scene is in the field south of the stream and north of the road that curves toward the eastern building. It is a different field from Bull Horns.
Buttons: Triangle, Triangle, Triangle.
Answer: Third choice.
Use a single sword with maximum Heat and some distance between you and the target. Do not hold lock-on for this one. Holding it can select Dancing Mouse instead, which makes it easy to think the game is giving you the wrong move.
18. Shortsword: Phantom Wolf
Available: Chapter 9, night only.
Picture: Howling Wolf, from Shichigoro at level 30 or higher.
Where: Cliff Road. Follow the winding route away from its southwestern entrance and look for the wolf at the bend on the northern part of the loop.
Buttons: X eight times.
Answer: Second choice.
The combat move needs a shortsword and four enemies lined up for your approach. Run toward the group, start the Heat Action with Triangle, then press Square, Triangle, Square. A single enemy is not enough, which is why this one takes more setup than most of the other revelations.
Before you cross these off
Check both lists. Learning all 18 picture revelations fills the relevant learned-ability entries. The Heat-action list wants you to actually perform the moves, and some require very specific enemies, positioning or a full gauge.
For anything that refuses to trigger, work through the conditions in this order: correct weapon style, enough Heat, correct target, correct distance and position. For the revelation scene itself, check the picture and time of day first. Those are two separate problems, and checking the right one saves a lot of running around.
