Kenzan! guide: all 31 regular abilities and how to learn them
The ability list has 60 entries, but they aren't all Heat Actions. This guide covers the 31 regular techniques and passive upgrades. The other 29 are learned Heat techniques, covered in the revelation and Heat Action guides.
A level requirement and a random-fight requirement are different things. Komaki's encounter counts need ordinary street encounters. Story and substory fights do not count toward those lessons.
Scarecrow training abilities
Koetsu's scarecrow training supplies eight of these entries. Complete the earlier floor before expecting the next floor's lessons to appear. The course names below are the names to look for in the training list.
1. Single Sword Consecutive Strikes: Starter course, Chapter 6. Extends the single-sword combo. Use the normal Square sequence and Triangle finisher with the longer chain available.
2. Two Swords Consecutive Strikes 1: Twins course, Chapter 7. Extends the two-sword combo.
3. Greatsword Technique: Knockdown Strike: Demon course, Chapter 7. Hold Triangle with a greatsword for the knockdown attack.
4. Shortsword Technique: Running Stab: Ninja course, Chapter 7. Press Triangle while running with a shortsword equipped.
5. Zanki Style: Dodge Strike: Regular Strength course, Chapter 9, after all first-floor courses. With a single sword, press Triangle during a single X evade. A double-X roll does not activate it. The attack is strongest when used from behind rather than directly in front of the enemy.
6. Two Swords Consecutive Strikes 2: Twin Strength course, Chapter 9, after the first floor. Extends the two-sword chain again.
7. Rigid Body Knowledge: Painful Strength course, Chapter 9, after the first floor. A passive upgrade that makes you harder to knock down while in Heat mode.
8. True Rigid Body Knowledge: Twin Heaven course, late Chapter 10, after all second-floor courses. Improves that resistance further. It isn't a promise that every enemy attack becomes harmless.
Waterfall abilities
The waterfall courses unlock in sequence. Finish the previous course before returning for the next chapter's lesson.
9. Red Pride: first waterfall course, Pleasure from a Rod, Chapter 6. Heat builds automatically while your health is critical.
10. White Pride: second course, Embarrassed by Restraint, also available in Chapter 6 after the first. Increases Heat gained through zanshin in the single-sword style.
11. Black Pride: third course, Lips of Pure Love, Chapter 7. Builds Heat when you defend against attacks.
12. Blue Pride: fourth course, Spread Legs, Opening the Path to a Dream, Chapter 8. Prevents health reaching zero while you remain in Heat mode. Once you are no longer in Heat mode, that protection is gone, so don't treat it as permanent invincibility.
13. Yellow Pride: fifth course, Debauchery, Chapter 9. Hold R2 in the unarmed style to build Heat.
Komaki's regular dojo techniques
Visit the Gion Martial Arts Dojo. The dialogue options describe the lesson you want; the recognition cues here help distinguish them from his Heat Action lessons.
14. Cat Flip: Chapter 5, after at least ten random encounters. Choose the lesson about avoiding a fall. Press X while falling in the unarmed style to recover without landing flat on the ground.
15. Grab Reversal: Chapter 6, after at least 20 random encounters. Choose the lesson about escaping a hold. Repeatedly press Circle when grabbed to throw the enemy off.
16. Desperate Fist: Chapter 8, at least 30 random encounters, and Cat Flip already learned. Choose the lesson about countering when knocked down. Press Triangle from the knocked-down position to stun the enemy in the unarmed style.
17. Purgatory Palm: late Chapter 10, after at least 50 random encounters. Ask about a powerful striking technique. Hold Triangle in the unarmed style to launch the knockdown strike.
18. Power Throw 1: Chapter 5, level ten or higher. Ask to strengthen your throw. Improves unarmed throw damage by 20%; use Circle for the throw.
19. Power Throw 2: Chapter 7, level 30 or higher, after Power Throw 1. Learn the second throw upgrade. Throwing an enemy into other opponents is more effective at knocking them down.
The encounter count doesn't replace the chapter requirement. If you have already fought enough random enemies but the lesson isn't offered, check story progress and any earlier technique requirement before grinding more fights.
Zanki Dojo techniques
These are single-sword techniques taught at Shibusawa's dojo. Fees are separate from the donation thresholds for the three-stage Zanki Blade.
20. Boulder Slice: Chapter 6. Complete the introductory lesson. Hold R1, push the left stick forward and press Triangle.
21. Chagrin Knowledge: Chapter 7; lesson fee 3,000 mon. Press L1 immediately after your guard breaks to recover your defence.
22. Dashing Blade: Chapter 7; fee 5,300 mon. Press Triangle while running with a single sword.
23. Whirlwind Blade: Chapter 7; fee 1 Ryo 500 mon. Hold R1, pull the left stick back and press Triangle.
24. Parry Strike: Chapter 7; fee 2 Ryo 5,000 mon. Parry with L1, then press Triangle for the follow-up that knocks the opponent down.
25. Zanki Blade Stage 1: Chapter 7; donate a total of 1 Ryo and complete the lesson. Hold Triangle to charge the opening strike.
26. Zanki Blade Stage 2: after Stage 1; cumulative donations of 3 Ryo. Press Triangle after Stage 1 for the next strike.
27. Zanki Blade Stage 3: after Stage 2; cumulative donations of 5 Ryo. Press Triangle after Stage 2 to complete the chain.
The donation totals are cumulative. You need five Ryo donated overall for the last stage, not one plus three plus five. The separate paid lessons still have their own fees.
Tengu Mask techniques
Buy the masks from the peddler at Sanjusangendo, receive the letter and meet the Tengu fighter at Rendai Field in the evening. Give him the appropriate mask, then defeat him to learn the technique. Collecting a mask alone doesn't teach the move.
28. Two Sword Rolling Slice: late Chapter 10; Mysterious Small Tengu Mask. With two swords, double-tap X to roll left or right, then press Triangle during the roll.
29. Two Sword Yin and Yang: late Chapter 10; Mysterious Crow Tengu Mask. Parry with L1, then press Triangle for the two-sword follow-up.
30. Two Sword Sudden Death: Chapter 11; Mysterious Tengu Mask. Hold R1 and press Triangle just as the enemy is about to connect. This is a timed counter, not a charged attack.
31. Secret Skill: Tengu Feet: Chapter 12; Mysterious Large Tengu Mask. Press X during a Square combo to cancel into an evade. It consumes 500 Heat, so the ability needs Heat available when you want to use it.
The mask vendor's inventory unlocks through a purchase sequence, so plan those purchases alongside the weapon-material shopping list. Don't sell a mask before finishing its lesson.
Finding the last missing entry
Compare the course or lesson you completed with the ability list itself. Training scores, learned abilities and performed Heat Actions are separate records. Getting a high score in a course isn't a substitute for doing a different teacher's lesson, and learning a Heat technique isn't the same as performing it in combat.
If all 31 entries here are present but the ability list is incomplete, move on to the learned Heat techniques. If one regular entry is missing, its teacher, chapter, level, encounter count or previous course above should tell you what to check next.
