Like a Dragon: Ishin! Trooper Guide, Part 2: Useful Combinations and Legendary Recruits
Once you've got a few cards, stop looking at rarity alone and start looking at what the squad actually does. A powerful attack is useful. A setup that lets you use it at the right moment, while keeping Ryoma alive, is better.
Shinada as corporal
Shinada Tatsunosuke is a strong leader because his corporal trait raises attack and defense. His Time is Fleeting ability slows time, giving you an opening to attack.
One Gunman setup pairs him with two Uta Horiemon cards. Activate Uta's gun-damage boosts, then use the opening from Shinada to attack. Keep an eye on the ability timers rather than spending most of the boosted period repositioning.
Shinada's time-slow ability prevents you from using Special Moves while it is active. If your plan relies on a style's Special Move, wait for that effect to end instead of wondering why the move won't start.
This is a build to work toward if those cards turn up, not a reason to burn every ryo trying to assemble it immediately.
Kasuga as corporal
Kasuga Ichinojo gives you another squad slot and improves charge speed. That's useful when you want more abilities available without giving up healing.
His When Words Fail ability makes attacks deal critical damage for a short period. Pairing it with Shinada's time slowdown lets you make better use of that brief opening. Have the enemy in reach before activating your damage boost; don't spend its duration running across the room.
Grouping enemies before an attack
Yonashiro Shozo's Essence of the Void pulls nearby enemies together. Follow it with Tendo Yojiro's Essence of the Unyielding Wave to hit the gathered group with a piercing attack.
The order is the point. Pull them together first, then attack. Using both abilities whenever they happen to light up can waste the combination.
Using one card in several squads
You can assign the same card to more than one squad. That can save you from needing four copies of a useful corporal immediately.
It does not multiply that card's health contribution. If you're building up Ryoma's maximum health, separate cards matter. Reusing one card across several positions isn't the same as owning and equipping several copies.
Where the legendary cards come from
The following are part of the random recruitment/fight pool rather than a guaranteed reward from one specific quest:
• Ishioda Denji.
• Nishitani Shigeharu.
• Ryudo Rikiya.
• Shinada Tatsunosuke.
• Tendo Yojiro.
• Sayama Kaho.
• Yama-Goroshi.
• Song Hyun.
• Kasuga Ichinojo.
• Mukoda Sae.
• Makimura Mako.
• Toranosuke.
• Karaage.
• Mamezo.
Some also appear in paid DLC bundles, but that isn't their only source. You can recruit those regular cards through play. Spending more on Enlistment improves rarity odds; it still doesn't let you choose one of these names directly.
The separate celebrity set
The Elite Trooper Card Set contains Kenny Omega, Rahul Kohli, Cohh Carnage, Nyatasha Nyanners, Vampy Bit Me, and Alex Moukala. This was released as free DLC, separate from the regular recruitment pool and the paid expansion kit.
If you have that set installed, collect its content from Bakumatsu Bob at Teradaya. Trooper cards become usable when the system opens in Chapter 5. Check your platform's listing before downloading anything so you don't mistake a paid bundle with a similar name for the free set.
Building around what you have
Don't let a recommended setup stop you from using a perfectly good squad. If you haven't recruited Shinada, use another corporal whose trait benefits your preferred style. Keep a reliable heal available, then choose attacks or buffs that solve the fight you're actually struggling with.
For a crowded dungeon room, group damage can be more useful than another single-target attack. For a difficult boss, a heal or a controllable damage window may help more. Change the squad when the problem changes instead of assuming one arrangement has to carry the entire game.
