Like a Dragon: Ishin! (2023): Combat, Orbs, and What to Upgrade If fights are taking too long, check both your equipment and your ability wheels. A new move helps, but so do a stronger sword, a faster gun, and enough health to survive a mistake while learning a boss. CONTROLS USED IN THESE GUIDES With the default controller layout: • Light Attack: Square / X. • Heavy Attack and Heat Action: Triangle / Y. • Grab or the style's third attack: Circle / B. • Evade: Cross / A. • Guard: L1 / LB. • Fighting Stance, which locks onto an enemy: R1 / RB. • Special Move: R2 / RT. The first button is PlayStation, the second Xbox. On keyboard or a remapped controller, use the corresponding action in your controls menu. Learn a short Light Attack combination, add Heavy Attack for its finisher, then move. Different stopping points produce different finishers. You don't have to finish the longest available string every time. Against a boss, leave enough time to dodge the response. ORBS AND THE FOUR WHEELS Ryoma's overall level awards gray Training Orbs. Using a fighting style raises its own level and supplies colored orbs for that style. Both can buy abilities, but colored orbs stay on their matching wheel. Work outward along connected nodes. You cannot jump straight to a distant move because you have enough orbs in your inventory. When you earn a colored orb, replace a Training Orb already sitting on that style's wheel. The ability stays learned and the gray orb becomes available somewhere else. For example, replacing a gray orb in Swordsman with a blue one frees the gray orb for Wild Dancer. Check for these swaps before starting another grind. A padlock means there is another requirement. Training or a revelation removes the lock; you still need the connecting path and an orb. Owning a revelation book by itself doesn't teach the move. The separate training and revelation guides cover those routes. WHAT TO BUY FIRST Pick a main fighting style and improve its attack ranks, combo options, and movement. Add Health Increase nodes wherever they're convenient. Health upgrades benefit Ryoma generally; an upgrade specifically named for one style's damage is not a damage increase for all four. Heat Increase expands the gauge. Heat Enhancement improves how quickly it fills. Buy a few accessible Heat Actions too, so you have more than one way to spend what you build. Prioritize the problem you're having. Serene Heart helps Swordsman recover its guard. Evasive Shadow extends Wild Dancer's dodge chain. Gunman's firing upgrades help a ranged approach. A longer combo is less urgent if you keep getting hit before you can finish the short one. HEAT, SPECIAL MOVES, AND CARDS Heat Actions use the Heavy Attack prompt when their conditions are met. Special Moves use a different button and spend Heat while running. Their introductions come from Komaki, Ginryu, and William Bradley. Trooper abilities are separate again. In the remake they support ordinary combat as well as Battle Dungeons. Put recovery or other useful support on the styles you actually use, and read the activation setting before a difficult fight. The squad guides cover recruitment and card upgrades. To save Heat for later, hold L2 / LT to suppress ordinary Heat Action activation. Be careful with Trooper Activation Type 2: holding that button and pressing a face button can activate a card instead. A SIMPLE BOSS ROUTINE Watch a full attack sequence before rushing in. Dodge its final hit, punish briefly from the side or rear, and reset. If the boss stops flinching, stop treating your next hit as protection. Against groups, keep room behind you and avoid chasing one enemy into the middle of everyone else. Deal with an exposed gunner when you have an opening. Use a Heat Action to interrupt a dangerous situation rather than saving every bit of Heat for the final blow. Before retrying a fight, check your healing items, weapon attack, armor, available orbs, and squad. Changing one weak part of that setup can be more useful than repeating the same losing approach.
