LIKE A DRAGON: ISHIN! SMITHING: START HERE This covers the 2023 remake. Its crafting and Seal systems differ from the 2014 game, so do not mix the two sets of recipes. Kurogane Smithing opens in Chapter 3, after you gain access to northern Kyo. Look along the western Rakunai/Rakugai boundary, near North Umekojicho. The palanquin stop beside the building makes return visits easy. Inside, the main blacksmith handles equipment; the other vendor sells materials and basic hammers. Before starting a long crafting session, update the game. Patch 1.04 increased enemy item drops and added seven hard-to-find Seals to Battle Dungeon loot, including Greed, Fierce Deity and Square Special Moves. Old launch-week advice can send you on a much longer grind. WHAT EACH MENU DOES Craft consumes a particular base item, the listed materials, money and a hammer to produce the next item in that branch. Follow the connecting lines in the Smithing Diagram. A Bundle Blade cannot jump straight to a sword several steps farther along. Enhance installs Seals. Disassemble destroys equipment to recover materials and its removable Seals. Donate permanently hands equipment over to increase the smithy's level. Check for useful Seals and missing crafting bases before using either destructive option. Keep a separate base for each branch you want. A sword turned into one upgrade cannot simultaneously serve as the base for its sibling. Dungeon drops can save intermediate steps when building something to use, but check the Completion List before assuming a found item has satisfied its smithing entry. THE FIVE EQUIPMENT GRADES Gray is Dull, green Fine, blue Good, purple Great, and gold Best. At Dull, equipment has its basic stats and slots. Fine gives 103% of the base stat, Good 107%, Great 110%, and Best 115%. Good adds one slot over the base allocation; Best adds two. Great still has only the one additional slot. Hammers raise the BASE ITEM'S grade by this many steps: Iron: 0. Bronze: 1. Silver: 2. Gold: 3. Kiwami: 4. That makes hammer choice easier to plan. A Dull base needs a Kiwami Hammer for Best in one craft. A Good base only needs Silver. Once the base is already Best, Iron preserves that grade through the next normal craft. Anything beyond Best is wasted. Grade and position in the tree are separate. A gold early sword is still an early sword, and a late sword can still be gray. Check both the result's stats and its available slots before paying. LEVEL THE SHOP BEFORE THE EXPENSIVE BRANCHES The smithy caps at level 20. A recipes open at level 5, B at 10, and C at 15. The final crafting discount arrives at 16, giving a total 40% reduction. Levels 17–20 improve enhancement success, so reaching 20 is particularly useful before risking rare Seals. The nearby Rakugai Arms Dealer sells Bundle Blades for 1,000 mon. Buy a batch and donate them, then check the progress bar before buying more. There is no need to commit to an enormous fixed purchase upfront. Keep your equipped gear and useful dungeon drops out of the donation batch. Hammers are consumables. Iron is sold at the smithy; Bronze becomes available there after the relevant smithing upgrade. Silver is available through the regular Prize Wheel and the Gambling Den exchange. Gold appears on the Rare Prize Wheel and in later dungeons. Kiwami Hammers come from major completion rewards, including the end of Ernest Satow's substories. You can also buy Bronze and Silver with Arena points; the Arena guide has the current shop prices. A PRACTICAL ORDER Choose one weapon you intend to use, check its whole branch, and write down the missing materials. Buy common supplies instead of farming them by accident. Finish other side activities before the final equipment sweep so their rewards can contribute. Then craft the outstanding entries and handle missing Seals separately. Save before donating, disassembling or attempting rare enhancements. Keep that save until you have checked the result. A few seconds here is cheaper than replacing an important base or a Seal that took several dungeon runs to find.
