Like a Dragon: Ishin! Ernest Satow's three substories and why the last one takes so long Ernest's quests are entries 70, 71, and 72 in the 2023 remake. They introduce the Bakumatsu memoirs, and you can't finish the whole chain as soon as you meet him. The later steps depend on your collection and story progress. 70. The Captain and the Curious In Chapter 5, walk north of Umai Udon in Fushimi and meet Ernest Satow. Accept his invitation to have a drink. Continue through the conversation and the fight with Kawakami Gensai. This opens the memoir hunt. Check the Bakumatsu Archives menu to track what you've found, and return to Ernest at the izakaya north of Umai Udon to discuss the documents. Don't rely entirely on the Inviting Hat to find this encounter; walk to the location yourself if it isn't marked. 71. Diplomacy in Darkness Once you've gathered enough memoirs and handed them over, return to Ernest's usual izakaya. You'll learn he's been kidnapped. The updated remake walkthrough lists the trigger from Chapter 7 with nineteen memoirs, roughly 73 percent. Some older guides put it much later, so don't wait until Chapter 13 before checking on him. After the kidnapping conversation, head to Mukurogai's southeast waterfront, on the lower level. Defeat Tanaka Shinbei and the other attackers to rescue Ernest. Finishing this also opens Precious Packages, substory 38, back by Teradaya. If that package collision hasn't been appearing for you, this is the missing prerequisite to check. 72. A Lasting Thirst for Peace This is a finale quest. You need to finish 71 and collect and hand over the twenty-five memoirs available before the last reward. There are twenty-six in total, but the final one comes from completing this substory. You are not supposed to find all twenty-six before starting it. After handing over the available memoirs, leave Fushimi and return. Look for Ernest on the bridge near Umai Udon. He's preparing to leave Japan and wants to visit Gion before he goes. Go with him and be ready for a fight. Afterward, return to his usual place in Fushimi for the goodbye. The rewards include a Kiwami Hammer, 400 Virtue, and A Letter from the Right Honorable E. Satow, the final memoir. If Ernest's next scene isn't starting • Check the actual collection entries, not just how many ground sparkles you've picked up. Prize tickets look similar. • Hand the memoirs over and go through the available conversations with him. • Leave the area and return after the hand-in. • For 72, make sure you've reached the finale and finished 71. • Recheck missing memoir locations after their nearby substories and required story events. An empty spot earlier in the game doesn't mean the document will never appear there. This is the quest progression. The individual memoir locations need to be checked against the collection list as well; walking through these three quests alone won't fill the archive for you.
