Like a Dragon: Ishin! Fushimi substories, Part 1: the author, the bathhouse, the stolen lunch, and Sakiko's stories This covers substories 37 through 45 in the 2023 remake. They're numbered together in the list, but they don't all unlock together. Most of these are early ones. Precious Packages and Invasion of the Black Ships? have to wait until Chapter 7. 37. Death of the Author Available in Chapter 2. Go upstairs inside Teradaya, walk past the men in the hallway, and follow the corridor around to the author's room. He's struggling with his writing and needs suggestions on three separate visits. Choose these answers: • A cat might be funny. • Botch-chan! • Heart. Leave the inn and come back between conversations. Stay with the sequence until you've had the final conversation and received the reward. Answering the first question doesn't finish the whole substory. 38. Precious Packages Available in Chapter 7, after substory 71, Diplomacy in Darkness. That's the important condition here. You can be far enough into the main story and still find nothing at the starting spot because Ernest's quest isn't finished. Walk around the northwest side of Teradaya. A collision mixes up two packages. Head to Mukurogai and check the southeast waterfront, where a deal has gone wrong. Win the fight and retrieve the package. When offered the food, choose “No, I have to return this.” Take it back to the person behind Teradaya. The reward is a Great Serpent Skin. 39. A Clean Streak Available in Chapter 3. Return to Harima, the bathhouse in Yashikimachi that you visited earlier in the story, and go inside. Someone steals Ryoma's clothes. Chase the thief down, then get back to the bathhouse while avoiding the people chasing you. When you're trying to catch him, follow him from behind rather than running straight at him from the front and making him turn around. Finish the escape and return to the bathhouse to receive a Crystal and 300 Virtue. 40. A Man and His Sack Available in Chapter 3. Look for the food queue in Yashikimachi, north of Hanako, and join the back of it. The seller runs out before you get your turn. Leave the area and return, then queue again. He sells out again. On the third visit, you finally get your food, only for a thief to take it. Catch him to finish the substory and receive 300 Virtue. If you're walking a few steps away and finding that nothing has changed, enter and leave a building or take a palanquin out to another area before returning. The queue needs to reset between attempts. You don't have to keep standing there waiting for the vendor to restock. 41. All in the Hips Available in Chapter 2 at Umai Udon in Fushimi Ichibangai, east of Ebisu Pawn. Order a meal to meet the owner and start his friendship. Return and speak to him again to get pulled into helping at the shop. This introduces the udon minigame. Remember the customers' orders and repeat the matching inputs in order. Complete the shift to finish the substory, unlock further shifts, and receive 250 Virtue plus a share of the shop's earnings. Finishing this introduction and maxing the owner's friendship are separate jobs. If you're clearing the completion list, you'll be returning for more shifts. 42. Invasion of the Black Ships? Available in Chapter 7 during the daytime. Go to the southern end of Fushimi Ichibangai, by the harbor, and listen to the two men talking. Leave and return to find the seasick visitor. Ask around for a remedy. The cure you need is an umeboshi. Ichikura General Goods sells one if you don't already have it. The old man near the boats provides the useful suggestion; the sake and exercise suggestions don't solve the problem. Help the visitor, then defeat the samurai who turn up. Your reward is Precise Machinery and 350 Virtue. Don't leave after handing over the umeboshi and assume you're finished; there's still a fight. 43. It's a Long Story Available in Chapter 2. Find the women talking near Hanako in South Yashikimachi. After the conversation breaks up, speak to Sakiko and agree to listen. Her questions are checking whether you've kept track of what she said. The answers are: • Bamboo shoots. • Outside a tea shop. • Of course – it's Sakiko. Get them right for a Gold Seal. This starts a three-part sequence, all at the same spot. Leave and come back before looking for the next conversation. 44. It's a Long Story: The Final Chapter Despite the title, this isn't her last substory. Finish 43, leave the area, and return to Sakiko. The answers this time are: • Red, white, and green. • Amazake. • Sumire. Answer all three correctly for a Tear of the Dragon. If you're collecting crafting materials, it's worth getting the answers right rather than rushing through and accepting a lower reward. 45. It's a Long Story: Epilogue Finish 44 and return to Sakiko after leaving the area again. The last set of answers is: • A scarecrow. • Pickled daikon. • A tuna. All three correct earns a Golden Medicine Case. Two correct earns a Small Gold Nugget; fewer correct gives Scrap Iron. This is the end of Sakiko's three-part conversation chain. For these nine entries, the common sticking points are the return visits and the Chapter 7 requirements. Check those before assuming a missing marker means something has broken. Precious Packages, especially, depends on another substory that is much farther down the numbered list.
