Like a Dragon: Ishin! Guide: Cannon Coaching and Its Completion Requirements
Professor Shinbei is on Mukurogai's eastern waterfront, on the ground floor. You can meet him near the end of Chapter 2 once you're free to explore there. Look for the cannon out over the water.
Start with his introductory lesson. Use the light-attack button to hit the incoming cannonballs. That opens Knowledge About Cannons on the Gunman skill tree. Unlocking the training gate and spending an orb on the ability are separate steps, so check the skill tree afterward.
You then get two versions of the activity: Swordsman and Gunman.
SWORDSMAN
Time the swing for the ball's arrival rather than pressing when the cannon fires. A clean slice scores better than a deflection. If you keep knocking balls away without cutting them, adjust your timing slightly on the next shot instead of changing everything at once.
Use a fixed visual reference near Ryoma to judge when the ball reaches swinging distance. The shot's travel time matters; firing the cannon isn't your signal to attack.
GUNMAN
Wait until the incoming ball crosses the reticle, then shoot. Pay attention to the firing pattern. A low, direct shot reaches you faster than a high lob, and several balls can arrive in sequence.
Don't hammer the button through every volley. Watch the first attempt, learn where the fast shots interrupt the slower ones, and fire to that pattern on the next run.
RANKS AND UNLOCKS
Both weapons have Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced trials. A Silver earns a material reward, but you need Gold to unlock the next difficulty. Watch the rank meter on the left: you can make a few mistakes and still reach Gold, so don't restart immediately after one missed ball.
For the Masters section of the Completion List, finish these six:
• Swordsman: Gold on Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.
• Gunman: Gold on Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.
Gold in both Advanced trials opens Bonus difficulty for both weapons. Bonus is optional for completion. It introduces trick shots that loop, stall or change their flight, so the ordinary shot rhythm won't carry you through unchanged.
Bonus Swordsman can award Platinum Filings, which makes returning worthwhile when you're crafting. Check the reward before starting a farming session and compare it with the materials you actually need.
If the next trial hasn't opened, check your recorded medal rather than assuming a successful-looking run was Gold. And if you're only here to finish the Masters list, the six Gold medals above are the target; you don't need to force your way through Bonus afterward.
