Ryū ga Gotoku Kenzan!: every arena tournament and all 50 opponents
The arena is at Hozoin Temple. Free tournament participation opens in Chapter 9. Completion requires beating every distinct opponent at least once, not just winning every tournament.
Each tournament has three fights. Most use supplied weapons, and the style you choose stays fixed for the tournament. Peerless is the exception that allows your own weapons. You cannot use healing items; you recover 30% health between rounds, while Heat carries forward.
Unlocking all 12 tournaments
Start with Hozoin Training and Ho-Oh Contest in Chapter 9. Then work through these win requirements:
• Divine Fist: win Hozoin Training four times. This tournament is unarmed.
• Sword Hell: win Hozoin Training twice and Ho-Oh twice.
• Intense Freeze: win Sword Hell three times.
• Great Ho-Oh: win Ho-Oh four times, then reach the relevant Chapter 10 progression. Single swords only.
• Adamantine: win Divine Fist three times, available during Chapter 10. Greatswords only.
• Scorching Blaze: win Intense Freeze three times, available during Chapter 10.
• Cliff Edge: win Scorching Blaze three times, available during Chapter 10.
• Master Contest: win Great Ho-Oh three times and Adamantine three times, available during Chapter 10.
• Swordmaster Contest: win Master Contest three times and Cliff Edge three times, available during Chapter 10.
• Peerless: win Swordmaster Contest four times, then reach Chapter 11.
Progression and tournament wins both matter. If you've won enough but the next event isn't listed, advance the story rather than replaying the same event indefinitely.
The four hazard tournaments
Sword Hell telegraphs the sections where blades are about to come through the floor. Move out of those sections before they rise.
Intense Freeze drops icicles. Their shadows show where they're going to land, so keep watching the floor while you fight.
Scorching Blaze burns the outside of the arena. Stay away from the edges instead of backing yourself into the flames.
Cliff Edge removes the barrier. Falling off is an immediate loss, regardless of remaining health. Wrestlers are dangerous near the edge because of their throws. A greatsword's reach and knockback can help keep them away and push other opponents out.
How to find a missing opponent
Look at the tournament's participant list before committing. You can back out and select the tournament again to refresh that list. Check the name you're missing rather than finishing three fights only to realise that person wasn't entered.
The list below gives at least one tournament for every fighter. For ordinary fighters, this is a practical place to look, not a claim that they appear nowhere else. Gated opponents have their conditions included afterward.
Ordinary roster
1. Muso Kennosuke: Scorching Blaze; spear.
2. Shugendo Raido: Peerless; kusarigama. For the earlier Scorching Blaze appearance, first win that tournament once.
3. Onigashima: Master Contest; wrestler.
4. Genji: Peerless; swordmaster. For Cliff Edge, win that tournament twice first.
5. Black Yaksha: Adamantine; greatsword.
6. Tsujikaze: Intense Freeze; Yagyu style.
7. Oseto Hayato: Master Contest; Yagyu style.
8. Koso Ryuzen: Divine Fist; unarmed.
9. Kage Tengu: Great Ho-Oh; single sword.
10. Munemasa Kanemaru: Adamantine; greatsword.
11. Matsushita Tomonoshin: Divine Fist; martial arts.

13. Sakura Hanamaru: Intense Freeze; swordmaster.
14. Aotsubaki: Cliff Edge; Yoshioka style.
15. Benizakura: Sword Hell, after you've won Sword Hell once; Yoshioka style.
16. Giami: Divine Fist; martial arts master.
17. Utsusemi: Intense Freeze; kusarigama.
18. Ujiie Hironojo: Ho-Oh; single sword. He is a rare entrant, so don't assume a few empty refreshes mean you've missed him permanently.
19. Kumomaru: Intense Freeze; single sword.
20. Genbu Ganichi: Adamantine; club.
21. Ikusa Kiriemon: Ho-Oh; swordmaster.
22. Yowaku Gamurieru: Sword Hell; Yagyu style.
23. Tonohana: Divine Fist; wrestler.
24. Okazemaru: Adamantine; club.
25. Sakika: Great Ho-Oh; single sword.
26. Yamatobo Gonzen: Intense Freeze; naginata.
27. Tachibana Benimaru: Ho-Oh; single sword.

29. Gaian: Hozoin Training; greatsword.
30. Kamiya Sotaro: Ho-Oh; Yoshioka style.
31. Urushihara Mantayu: Hozoin Training; wrestler.
32. Hagakure Shinobu: Hozoin Training; ninja sword.
33. Jiren: Hozoin Training; Hozoin spear style.
34. Kotobuki Fukukichi: Ho-Oh; single sword.
35. Kazekiri Satsu: Ho-Oh; swordmaster.
36. Doctor Yabuta: Hozoin Training; single sword.
37. Komemaru: Hozoin Training; unarmed.
38. Kawase Ryubei: Hozoin Training; martial arts master.
39. Tetsuwan Kumagoro: Hozoin Training; club.
40. Wada Yuzo: Hozoin Training; unarmed.
41. Nagaya Takujiro: Ho-Oh; single sword.

Training-locked opponents
43. Hozoin Inshun: finish every melon-cutting course, then look in Master Contest or Swordmaster Contest.
44. Kaei: finish all waterfall training, then look in Swordmaster Contest or Peerless.
45. Tokage: finish every scarecrow course, then look in Intense Freeze, Master Contest or Swordmaster Contest.
46. Hozoin Inei: finish all Jiraiya courses, then look in Master Contest.
47. Ryuma Yotaro: finish all horseback-archery courses, then look in Hozoin Training, Ho-Oh, Sword Hell or Cliff Edge.
The final three
48. Kisaragi Shigure: finish the Zanki Dojo training and win Peerless once. Then refresh Peerless for him. Another route is Great Ho-Oh after completing the dojo, winning Great Ho-Oh at least three times and holding an arena win rate of at least 70%.
49. Komaki Sozaemon: finish his complete training, including the final joint scene with Shibusawa that teaches Sword Reversal. Beat Kisaragi in Peerless, then look for Komaki in Peerless. Alternatively, with the same completed training, an 80% arena win rate and at least two Swordmaster Contest victories, he can enter Swordmaster Contest.
50. Kurokawa Hannya: finish all Tengu Mask training, defeat the other 49 fighters, maintain at least an 80% arena win rate and defeat both Kisaragi and Komaki in Peerless at least once each. He appears in Peerless.
That last distinction matters. Beating Komaki in Swordmaster Contest checks his name off the ordinary roster, but Hannya's condition specifically wants the Peerless victory as well.
Don't deliberately damage your win rate while searching for rare opponents. You'll need it high for the final unlock, and repeated tournament-list refreshes don't require throwing fights.
Watch the opponents who get stronger
Four opponents can improve after repeated defeats:
• Inshun: defeat him five times and win Peerless.
• Kumomaru: defeat him ten times and win Peerless.
• Kamiya Sotaro: defeat him ten times and win Swordmaster Contest.
• Wada Yuzo: defeat him ten times and beat Komaki once.
Wada can become much more dangerous than his early appearances suggest. Don't treat an old familiar name as an automatic easy win.
Collecting the reward
After you've beaten all 50 different fighters, the arena completion reward is the Ganryu Wooden Sword. Tournament victories also pay money, experience and an item, but repeatedly winning an event against the same handful of people doesn't replace filling out that 50-name roster.
For the cleanest run, finish the training while you're advancing the story, unlock the tournament tree, mark the ordinary fighters off, then work through Kisaragi, Komaki and Hannya. Keep a save before the final story departure so you can still complete anything required in Gion.
