Like a Dragon: Ishin! (2023): all 29 fish and where to catch them There are four fishing areas: two rivers and two sea spots. You need to catch every species for the Completion List. Buying a fish for cooking doesn't count as catching it. For a completion run, buy the fishing-pole upgrades at a shrine. River Classic costs 400 Virtue, Rivermaster 1,500, Sea Classic 400 and Seamaster 1,500. Buying those opens Peerless Pole for another 4,000, making the full set 7,800. Equip Peerless for both river and sea fishing once you have it. A better rod reaches farther and makes it easier to attract fish. If you can see a shadow but can't get your float anywhere near it, check the rod before wasting time recasting. How the catch works Cast near a fish's shadow, preferably in its path rather than behind it. When the fish takes interest, wait. The little early dips aren't the signal to strike. Press the confirmation button when the red part of the float dips beneath the water and the controller vibrates. There's no separate fight to reel it in afterward. Bait brings more fish into view for a limited time. Ichikura General Goods in Fushimi sells the ordinary and Quality varieties. Ebisu Pawn Rakunai sells the higher grades. Use bait when the rare shadows you need aren't appearing, then make use of the fishing time while it's active. Uji River: Fushimi Use the riverside fishing point near the southern end of Fushimi, by the waterfront south of Teradaya. These nine species can be caught here: • Crucian carp • Carp • Nishikigoi • Ghost koi • Electric catfish • Salmon • Rainbow trout • Softshell turtle • Crawfish Carp and nishikigoi have ordinary fish-shaped shadows. Crucian carp are wider. The very small, rounded shadows near the bank are worth checking for crawfish and softshell turtles. Use bait for ghost koi rather than assuming an empty-looking stretch has nothing in it. Kamo River: Mukurogai The fishing point is by the cannon-training area on Mukurogai's waterfront. Its eight species are: • Crucian carp • Electric catfish • Salmon • Rainbow trout • Freshwater eel • Sweetfish • Stringfish • Crawfish This is where you'll get the river fish that Uji doesn't cover: freshwater eel, sweetfish and stringfish. Eels have long, narrow shadows. Stringfish are large fish-shaped shadows farther out, so use a good rod and bait. Don't spend an hour at Uji expecting one to appear. Fishing Banks: sea Speak to the fisherman at the dock south of Teradaya and choose Fishing Banks. There are ten species here: • Whitebait • Goby • Thread-sail filefish • Squid • Scorpionfish • Japanese puffer • Tiger prawn • Common octopus • Porcupinefish • Sea bream Look around the rocks for the rounded shadows. The central rock is particularly useful for octopus. Goby have thin, stretched shadows in the shallows, while sea bream have wider fish shadows farther out. Porcupinefish can be awkward to separate from the other rounded shapes; keep checking the outer part of the fishing area with bait active. East Coast: sea Choose East Coast from that same Fushimi fisherman. Its nine species are: • Whitebait • Thread-sail filefish • Righteye flounder • Conger eel • Spider crab • Marlin • Great white shark • Bluefin tuna • Oarfish Conger eel have narrow shadows nearer the front. Spider crab have rounded shadows. For marlin, sharks and tuna, look for the very large fish shapes farther out. Oarfish have a long, narrow silhouette much larger than an eel's. Bait helps reveal them. The overlap between locations is intentional. You don't need to catch a salmon again at Kamo if you've already registered it at Uji. Check your Completion List before moving on, and use the areas to pick up the species still missing. The tuna requirements The Diligence Records also need 100 fish caught overall, including ten tuna and a big tuna. Work on those while collecting the rest instead of selling yourself on the idea that one of every fish finishes all the fishing work. At the East Coast, use your Peerless Pole and bait, then target the large tuna shadows. Check the rank of the tuna you catch. If you're repeatedly catching bronze or silver tuna, leave the fishing area and start a new session. When you get a gold-rank tuna, keep checking the big-tuna record and continue if it hasn't registered yet. Let the game's completed record tell you when that requirement is done. Keep useful catches for cooking and orders. You need more than one freshwater eel, for example, and the advanced dishes use finished meals made with fish as well. Catching an extra while you're already in the right place can save another trip later.
