Lost Judgment: Master System, all eight cartridges and TownGo completion
The Master System is connected to the television in Yagami Detective Agency in Kamurocho. Collect the eight base-game cartridges and play each one once. You do not need to finish them, reach a high score, or buy the DLC games for TownGo.
The last cartridge, Secret Command, comes from the final side case. You can collect and play the other seven while working toward that request.
The four TownGo milestones
These are City Missions:
- Master System Beginner: play one base-game title.
- Master System Fan: play three different base-game titles.
- Master System Maniac: play five different base-game titles.
- Master System Master: play all eight base-game titles.
Replaying Alex Kidd eight times will not finish the list. Each of the eight named games needs its own checkmark.
To register a game:
1. Interact with the television in Yagami Detective Agency and select the cartridge.
2. Start the game so you enter gameplay.
3. Open the console's menu and quit when you are ready.
4. Check the Master System entry in TownGo. Expand its checklist with Triangle on PlayStation or Y on Xbox to see what remains.
On PlayStation, the touchpad opens the console menu. Options pauses the game itself, so use the touchpad when you want to quit or check the controls.
All eight cartridge locations
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Already owned. Select it at the television as soon as you can use the console.
Fantasy Zone
Buy it for ¥5,000 at Deco Rush on Carriage Highway in Ijincho.
This cartridge and the Fantasy Zone arcade cabinet have separate completion requirements. Playing the cartridge does not clear the arcade's 50,000-point objective, and playing the cabinet does not check off this cartridge.
Penguin Land
Buy it for ¥5,000 at Ebisu Pawn in Kamurocho, south of Yagami Detective Agency. Make sure you visit the Kamurocho pawnshop, not the one in Ijincho.
Enduro Racer
Buy it for ¥5,500 at Benten Pawn in southwest Ijincho. It joins the shop's stock in Chapter 8. If it is not listed yet, come back after reaching that chapter.
Quartet
Exchange 2,500 tags at the Gambling Hall in southeast Ijincho. Enter 7120 at its locked door to get inside, then use the prize exchange.
This is the traditional Gambling Hall, not Heaven's Door casino. You need its tags rather than casino chips.
Maze Hunter 3-D
Use Detective Dog in Ijincho after unlocking Ranpo through A New Partner in Chapter 4.
Go to Poppo on Tsurukame Highway and walk into the paved area immediately west of the shop, at the southern end of North Sakura River Street. Look around the blue BOSS vending machines and the raised hedge planter.
Call Ranpo there and follow him when he picks up a scent. Collect the item at the end of his search. You do not buy this cartridge from Poppo.
Woody Pop
First complete Squirrels Just Wanna Have Fun with Futaba outside Seiryo High School so you can follow the squirrel clues.
At Game Center Charles in Kamurocho:
1. Look just inside the entrance, on the right-hand wall at the top of the stairs.
2. Inspect the squirrel in Observation Mode.
3. Equip the Detector and follow the signal back outside.
4. Inspect the lower red paper lantern beside the entrance to collect Woody Pop.
Inspect the squirrel before searching for the reward. Simply using the Detector near the lantern will not complete the clue on its own.
Secret Command
Complete A Final Request -Reprise-, the last base-game side case.
Finish the other 41 non-DLC side cases, then check the request board at Yokohama 99 for “It's time.” This request is available in the Finale or afterward once its prerequisites are complete.
You also need to finish School Stories, because that unlocks one of the required side cases, Takayuki Yagami: Evil Detective? The DLC girlfriend cases are not part of the 41.
Accept the final request, meet Juzo Amon by the fountain at the east end of Hamakita Park, and defeat him. Completing the case awards Secret Command. Return to Yagami Detective Agency afterward and play it to finish the Master System list.
The three shop purchases cost ¥15,500 altogether. Quartet's 2,500 tags are separate; the other cartridges come from the activities above.
Controls and useful console features
The games use the original Master System's two-button layout:
- Button 1: Cross on PlayStation or A on Xbox.
- Button 2: Circle on PlayStation or B on Xbox.
- Directional controls: move your character, vehicle, or cursor.
The console also provides rapid inputs and rewind. On PlayStation:
- Square repeats Button 1.
- Triangle repeats Button 2.
- R1 presses Buttons 1 and 2 together.
- R2 repeats both buttons together.
- Press the right stick, R3, to rewind.
Open the console menu to check your platform's full layout or any controls you have changed. Rewind is useful if you want to keep playing after a missed jump or a bad bounce, but none of these games needs a full clear for TownGo.
Getting started with each game
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Button 1 jumps and Button 2 punches. Move through the platforming stages, break blocks, and collect money to spend at shops. Some bosses challenge you to rock-paper-scissors. Keep an eye on what is inside a block before rushing into the next jump.
Fantasy Zone
Button 1 fires your main gun and Button 2 drops bombs. Destroy all the enemy generators to summon the boss, then defeat it to move on. Collect coins and use the shop for upgrades. The stage wraps horizontally, so you can circle around instead of flying straight through a crowded group.
Penguin Land
Button 1 jumps and Button 2 digs. Your job is to guide the egg down through the stage without breaking it. Plan where the egg will land before digging away the block beneath it. Long drops and enemies can ruin an otherwise clear route.
Enduro Racer
Button 1 accelerates and Button 2 brakes. Steer left and right, and press Down to pull a wheelie. Time the wheelie just before a ramp to clear the jump without losing as much speed. Reach the finish before the timer runs out.
Quartet
Button 1 jumps and Button 2 shoots. Search each stage for the boss carrying the exit key, defeat it, then make your way to the door. The boss is not always waiting beside the exit. Pick up a jetpack when you find one to make reaching higher areas easier.
Maze Hunter 3-D
Button 1 attacks once you have a weapon, and Button 2 jumps. Explore each maze, collect the key, and reach the activated warp tile to leave. Pick up equipment along the way rather than trying to push through every enemy unarmed.
The 3-D effect can be turned off if you prefer a normal display.
Woody Pop
Move left and right to keep the ball in play and break the blocks above. Button 1 activates a power, while holding Button 2 slows the paddle for smaller adjustments. Use the slower movement when the ball is coming down near an edge instead of making a big correction at the last second.
Secret Command
Button 1 fires the gun and Button 2 fires a bomb arrow. The ordinary gun has unlimited ammunition, but bomb arrows are limited. Rescue prisoners, keep moving away from enemy fire, and destroy the barricade at the end of each area. Save some bomb arrows for tougher targets rather than firing them continuously with the basic gun.
Japanese and Western versions
The console menu lets you switch between Japanese and Western versions. You only need to play one version of each game for TownGo.
Enduro Racer is worth trying in Japanese mode because it includes five extra stages. Some games also use different names: Secret Command appears as Ashura, and Maze Hunter 3-D as Maze Walker. These are regional versions of the same cartridges, not extra items to find.
The four Detective Essentials games
If you have the Detective Essentials Pack installed, collect its items from the delivery box at your hideout. It adds four games:
Alien Syndrome
A top-down shooter about rescuing hostages before heading to the exit and boss. Button 1 shoots; Button 2 opens a menu where you can check your rescue progress. Look for weapon pickups as you explore.
Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa
Button 1 fires and Button 2 drops bombs. Destroy the generators and defeat the boss, as in Fantasy Zone, but use the warp gates to travel between areas and find the remaining targets.
Global Defense
The directional controls normally move your aiming cursor. Hold Button 1 to move the satellite instead, and use Button 2 to shoot. During the offense section, destroy as many enemies as you can. Anything you miss becomes a threat during the defense section.
Sagaia
A side-scrolling shooter. Button 1 fires the main weapon and Button 2 drops bombs. Collect power-ups and use both weapons to deal with enemies above and below your flight path.
These four do not count toward the base-game eight, and you do not need to play them for Master System Master.
Hidden bonus: Snail Maze
You can play Snail Maze without finding another cartridge:
1. Start the Master System and stay at the game-selection screen rather than loading a cartridge. Use the Western version for this route.
2. Press Button 2 to leave that screen and show the console's startup screen: Circle on PlayStation or B on Xbox.
3. Hold Up, Button 1, and Button 2 together. That is Up + Cross + Circle on PlayStation, or Up + A + B on Xbox.
4. Guide the snail through the maze to the goal before time runs out.
Snail Maze is an optional extra. It does not replace one of the eight required cartridges.
Final check
Open the expanded Master System checklist in TownGo and confirm that these eight are marked as played:
- Alex Kidd in Miracle World.
- Fantasy Zone.
- Penguin Land.
- Enduro Racer.
- Quartet.
- Maze Hunter 3-D.
- Woody Pop.
- Secret Command.
Owning a cartridge is only the first step. If its checkmark is missing, return to the television, start that game, then check TownGo again.
