Yakuza: Like a Dragon: Hidden Shops, Gold Keys, and the Safes Worth Opening
Some of Ijincho's most useful shops are behind boarded-up doors that don't look like shops at all. If you've been walking past gold safes wondering when the story will hand you a reusable key, this is the detour you need.
Silver and gold safes work differently. The Silver Skeleton Key comes through the story near the end of Chapter 3 and keeps working. Gold Safe Keys are consumable. One key opens one gold safe.
The reliable way to get gold keys is to buy them from the hidden merchants, and that starts with a very brief career change.
GET DEMOLISH FIRST
Once job changing opens at Hello Work in Chapter 5, raise Ichiban's Charisma to level 3 and switch him to Foreman.
That gives him the field skill Demolish. You can immediately return him to Hero or whichever job you actually want to use. He keeps Demolish, so you do not need to fight as a Foreman or grind its rank just to open the shops.
When you find a boarded-up entrance with the appropriate interaction, use Demolish. Ordinary locked doors aren't all breakable, and story-blocked areas still need their story requirements.
FUMIE: THE EASY GOLD-KEY STOP
Head to the south end of Sunrise Street, past Hamako's restaurant. Look on the east side of the street for the little shop with the red awning and boarded entrance.
Break the boards and speak to Fumie inside.
She sells Gold Safe Keys for ¥10,000 each. Buy several before going on a safe hunt, particularly before a trip to another city. Coming back for one key at a time gets old very quickly.
Her stock also includes job-EXP accessories and slot-related items. Check the job named in an accessory's description before buying it. A boost for one profession is not automatically a general character-EXP bonus.
Fumie is the most convenient answer when all you want is a handful of keys. You don't need to wait for the more awkward merchant deeper in the city.
MANGEKYO: BEHIND THE BAR DISTRICT
Go to the row of bars containing Bar Rodriguez and Harbor Light. Find the stairs and passage behind those buildings, toward the riverside walkway, then look for the boarded shop entrance.
Use Demolish to open Mangekyo.
This shop sells accessories, but it does not sell Gold Safe Keys. That's the distinction to remember if you're checking every hidden shop and wondering why the key isn't in the list.
BLACK MARKET MERCHANT: RESTAURANT ROW
Once the Chapter 6 story route has opened up and you can freely revisit it, return to the secluded area behind Zhou Long Distribution in Restaurant Row.
From the Ijin Street side, use the narrow route by the weapon shop and head up the stairs. Look for the small boarded room beside the raised path, then use Demolish on its door.
The merchant sells Gold Safe Keys for the same ¥10,000 price, alongside combat items and accessories.
The enemies in this area become much tougher later in the game. If you're getting battered just trying to reach the shop, don't force it merely to buy keys. Fumie sells the same keys in a much easier location.
KAMULOP: DON'T SPEND EVERY CREST IMMEDIATELY
After Tojo Clan Crests begin appearing and the game introduces their collection, take some to the Hotel Grande Blu Marino at the northeastern end of Ijincho, near Hamakita Park.
Enter the hotel and go through to its courtyard. Kamulop is the mascot waiting there. Speak to him to open the crest exchange.
These are purchases made with crests, not yen. Picking up crests as you explore gives you access to useful equipment without spending the party's cash.
There is one reason to keep a reserve: later in the story, two special Poundmate unlocks become available for 50 crests each. Save 100 if you want both instead of spending everything on an early reward and having to rebuild your supply.
Crests are not limited solely to the ones lying on the map. Later yakuza enemies can drop them too, so spending them isn't a permanent lockout. It can still create more work than you needed.
THE CHINATOWN CASINO
Go to the public restrooms at the western side of Chinatown, near Breakwater Drive. Speak to the man guarding the entrance with Ichiban's Style at level 4 or higher.
Follow his directions to the concealed entrance inside the men's restroom. This opens the casino and its chip exchange.
You don't have to become good at blackjack or poker just to inspect the prize list. Chips can be purchased, which is useful if you need a particular equipment reward and already have a reliable money source.
Check the chip price before buying a large stack. Casino equipment can be part of a weapon upgrade chain, but not every prize is something your current party needs.
THE KINKA BRIDGE GAMBLING HALL
Near Kinka Bridge, across from Kinka Pharmacy, look for the guarded ladder leading down toward the river.
With Confidence level 4, speak to the guard and get access. Climb down and follow the lower walkway beneath the bridge to the Gambling Hall.
This is the place for koi-koi and oicho-kabu, with its own points and prize exchange. It is separate from the Chinatown casino, so going to one does not unlock the other or give you access to the same stock.
Opening the hall also matters for a later substory. If Iroha refuses to offer the rumor about the underground weapons dealer, check that you've actually opened this location first.
CHAU KA LONG'S ARMORY
In Chapter 9 or later, with the Gambling Hall already accessible, speak to Iroha at Survive about the underground weapons dealer. This starts Whispers of the Underworld.
Go to Zhou Long Distribution on Ijin Street and use the password “Lau Chau Chau Ya.” Win the resulting fight, then follow the lead back to the man beneath Kinka Bridge.
For the complete shop-and-recruitment route, raise Confidence to level 7. The level-4 requirement got you past the gambling-hall guard; it does not finish Chau's requirements.
Once your Confidence is high enough, speak to Chau and open his shop. Continue talking through his follow-up conversations, roughly four conversations in total, to finish the substory and unlock him as a Poundmate. Don't assume that opening the shop menu is the final step.
He sells expensive weapons, including items relevant to the long workshop upgrade chains. Look at the actual recipe you are working toward before buying. An expensive weapon isn't automatically the upgrade base or donor weapon for the character you're building.
FIVE GOLD-SAFE DETOURS WORTH REMEMBERING
You do not have to open every safe for the platinum, but these Kamurocho stops are useful once the story brings you back there:
• Dragonfish Tenugui: enter the building containing Lullaby Mahjong on Tenkaichi Street and climb to the third-floor office. Open the gold safe inside. This is a valuable job-EXP accessory for Ichiban, so get it before settling into the late-game job grind.
• Tranquil Tenugui: the same building has another gold safe in the second-floor office. Check both floors rather than opening the first safe you see and assuming you've found the Dragonfish Tenugui.
• Curse Substitute: check Shichifuku Parking Lot, east of Kanrai. The gold safe there is a useful pickup for your later defensive equipment options.
• Sacrifice Stone: enter Kamuro Theater and use the elevators to reach the rooftop garden. Look along the wall for the gold safe.
• War God Talisman: search the little U-shaped back alley north of Yoshida Batting Center in the Hotel District. This is the same general alley worth checking during the Honk-Honk search.
Those are five safes, so bring five keys if you intend to open all of them. The two Tenugui safes are separate purchases, not two rewards from one chest.
For the efficient route, learn Demolish once, open Fumie, keep a few keys on hand, and inspect the other exchanges when you have a specific upgrade or summon in mind. Ijincho has enough expensive distractions without buying a weapon first and discovering later that it belongs to somebody else's job.
