Yakuza: Like a Dragon: Max Ichiban's Personality Without Buying Stat Packs
Ichiban's personality stats look like another completion checklist until you start running into locked jobs, locked conversations, and people who apparently need you to become a completely different man before they'll talk to you.
There are six stats: Passion, Confidence, Charisma, Kindness, Intellect, and Style. Each caps at level 10. Raising one to the cap earns Sound Character. Raising all six earns Super Human.
You don't need paid personality boosters. You also don't need to sit through the same exam twenty times, because that doesn't keep giving you personality points.
Here's how to get this done without turning the whole playthrough into a grind.
START WITH THE SCHOOL, NOT THE BOOK GRIND
In Chapter 4, visit Ounabara Vocational School on Daikokuten Street, east of Jinnai Station. Substory 10, Fast Times at Ounabara, introduces the school and gives you the Sports Tier 2 exam for free.
The normal exam format is five questions, drawn from a larger question pool. Get three correct and you pass. The answer positions change, so remember the actual answer rather than “the second option.” Most questions give you 30 seconds. Some music questions allow a little longer.
Save before paying for a new exam. A failed attempt still costs money, and opening the console's home screen is not a reliable way to stop the timer.
You receive the personality reward the first time you pass. Retaking a passed exam is free, but it does not give you that reward again. That's the important distinction if you're trying to raise a stat efficiently.
THE COMPLETE EXAM CHECKLIST
These are the 21 certificates available:
• Sports Tier 2
• Sports Tier 1
• Underworld Studies
• Isezaki Ijincho Proficiency
• Animal Science
• SEGA Proficiency Tier 2
• SEGA Proficiency Tier 1
• Mathematics Tier 2
• Mathematics Tier 1
• Fashionista
• Music Proficiency Tier 2
• Music Proficiency Tier 1
• Pharmacology
• Nutritionist
• Hazardous Materials
• Flag Master
• World History
• Trivia King Tier 2
• Trivia King Tier 1
• Trivia King Special Tier
• Ounabara Proficiency
Pass the lower tier to work up through a subject's higher tiers. The final Ounabara Proficiency exam becomes available after you've passed the other twenty.
That final exam changes the rules: you need all five answers correct, and its questions can come from the earlier subjects. Save immediately before it. Don't go in expecting the usual three-out-of-five pass mark.
Certified Genius only requires ten certificates. Miyakoshi's romance substory requires all 21, along with her separate personality and gift requirements. If you're doing the complete substory run, stopping at ten just means you'll have to come back.
WHICH SUBJECTS HELP WHICH STATS?
If one stat is holding up a job or conversation, target the matching subject rather than choosing exams at random.
• Passion: Sports and SEGA exams are useful early choices.
• Confidence: Underworld Studies and Hazardous Materials each give a substantial boost.
• Charisma: Sports and Nutritionist help here.
• Kindness: Animal Science, Nutritionist, and Music.
• Intellect: Mathematics, Pharmacology, and Isezaki Ijincho Proficiency.
• Style: Fashionista, SEGA, and Music.
For a few concrete examples, Fashionista gives 100 Style, Animal Science gives 100 Kindness, and Mathematics Tier 1 gives 100 Intellect. Nutritionist splits its reward between Kindness and Charisma, 50 points each.
Check the reward preview before paying. Early on, a certificate that unlocks the job you want is worth more than one that adds points to a stat you're not using yet.
Most paid exams cost tens of thousands of yen, with the expensive final-tier exams reaching ¥100,000. If that is a major chunk of your money, do the free introduction and return after getting your business going or collecting the cat and kappa rewards. There is no need to bankrupt the party over a quiz while everyone is wearing terrible armor.
Ikari also sells two permanent exam aids. Hyper Focus costs ¥100,000 and adds 30 seconds to one question per exam. Divine Pencil costs ¥500,000 and removes two wrong answers from one question per exam. They can help if you're taking the tests unaided, but neither is required for the trophy or the certificates.
USE THE CHALLENGE LIST WHILE YOU PLAY
Open Part-time Hero and check its Challenge category. These are different from the Support and Rescue requests that award hero stars. Challenges award personality points for things you're already doing around the city.
This is where a lot of unfinished personality levels can be cleaned up without grinding books.
Look for a challenge that's close to completion. Finish an untried restaurant menu. Use a weapon category you haven't collected much of. Try a minigame you've ignored. Complete the next easy combat target. Check the displayed reward so you're working toward the stat you actually need.
Don't spend half an hour repeating an activity without checking whether you've already collected its relevant challenge reward. A first clear or a new milestone can be useful. Mindless repetition after the milestones are exhausted may not be.
Dialogue choices in substories, Drink Links, and certain restaurant conversations also add personality points. Those small rewards accumulate while you're finishing other content. Do those before deciding you need a dedicated farming session.
THE BOOKS TO KEEP
Personality books are consumables. Finding one isn't enough; use it from your inventory.
Each of these adds 50 points to its matching stat:
• Between Thrill and Passion: Passion.
• Think and Grow Confident: Confidence.
• You, Unleashed: Charisma.
• The Poor Zoo: Kindness.
• Special Theory of Relative Brutality: Intellect.
• Street Dandy: Style.
These exist inside the game. The fact that a paid DLC pack includes them does not mean buying that pack is necessary.
Minigame prize exchanges are useful when you're only missing one stat. For example, Can Quest has personality-book rewards, while the batting center and shogi exchanges offer books including Think and Grow Confident and Street Dandy. Check the available stock and point price before committing to a long grind, since some rewards depend on your progress in that activity.
Use the book that fixes the actual gap. Don't grind a reward for a personality stat that is already at level 10.
WHY IT'S WORTH DOING BEYOND THE TROPHIES
Personality affects Ichiban's job access and several side-content requirements. Each romance route also checks a different maxed stat, so all six matter if you're finishing every substory.
The stats provide combat benefits too. In this game, Passion improves resistance to Silence, Confidence to Sleep, Charisma to Fear, Kindness to Rage, Intellect to Brainwash, and Style to Charm. Those are resistances, not a reason to stop carrying recovery items.
The clean route is straightforward: take the free school introduction, clear new exams once you can afford them, collect the personality rewards attached to the rest of your completion work, and use books to finish whatever is left.
School first. Regular completion work next. Targeted cleanup last. That's a lot better than spending hours farming one minigame and discovering you still had a pile of easy rewards waiting elsewhere.
