Spearfishing in Yakuza 6 is an on-rails shooting minigame, and it connects to more of the side content than it first appears. It gives you three substories, a baseball pitcher, money, and a reason to finish Mama's story at Snack New Gaudi.
Start during daytime in Chapter 4 at Jingai Ferry Dock. Examine the fish, meet Isao, return for the injury sequence, and agree to help. Your first course is Azure Coast.
The important resource is air. Aggressive fish glow red before attacking, and getting hit costs air. Prioritize something about to charge you over a harmless fish that's worth a few extra points. Shoot the treasure chests too: they can contain points or an air refill.
Reload before you're empty when there's a clear stretch. Firing an empty gun produces a slower reload, which is a bad time to discover that a shark is coming straight at you. The course moves automatically, so use the quiet parts between groups to prepare for the next one.
Azure Coast ends with the Emperor Squid. Shoot down the smaller squid it sends toward you, then use the openings to damage the boss. Clearing this first course finishes #47, earns I'll Have the Calamari, and gives you the High-impact Speargun.
The next course, Sunken Labyrinth, is connected to #48. You also need baseball #35 finished. Speak to the baseball player beside Isao and Amano, then dive for the Delicious Octopus. Use the stronger speargun and keep its small magazine reloaded. At the boss, stop the incoming octopi before concentrating on damage. Clearing it gives the High-capacity Speargun and recruits Gorchov, a very useful baseball pitcher.
For #49, speak to Isao and Amano again and take on Dragon's Den. This is the longer, harder course ending with the Bloody Shark. You can attempt it with the equipment you've earned, but getting a stronger gun first makes the course much less frustrating.
There are two useful routes:
- Finish Mama's New Gaudi story, #46, and speak to her afterward for the Kiwami Speargun. It has high damage and four spears per magazine.
- Buy Ahab's Revenge from the Onomichi black-market dealer for ¥300,000. It holds twelve spears and has strong damage, which is especially comfortable for repeated runs.
The Modded Speargun is awarded after defeating the Bloody Shark. It isn't a prerequisite you somehow overlooked before fighting it.
At the shark, deal with the incoming fish instead of letting several hit you while you try to finish the boss. Across the course, keep an eye on the sea floor for chests and crabs, and don't spend every shot on a distant large fish while an attacker closes in.
Your score pays out at ten yen per point and also develops the separate spearfishing level. More levels improve your air capacity. If you're struggling, a successful repeat of a course you know builds money and survivability together.
For all fish types, return with good equipment and deliberately look for the smaller or less obvious targets. Gobies hide low around vegetation in Azure Coast. Conger eels are near the bottom early in Sunken Labyrinth. Dragon's Den adds targets such as marlin, coelacanth, giant oarfish, and giant crabs. A giant oarfish can be spotted toward the back-right early in that last course; the crabs are on the floor later in the run.
For platinum, you need the squid trophy and all three fishing substories. You do not need to max out the minigame's level. The full Award requires 960,000 fishing EXP, which is a substantial repeat-run grind. That figure is spearfishing EXP, not the colored experience used to upgrade Kiryu.
If you're doing every Award, finish the three courses and all species first, then use your preferred strong gun on Dragon's Den for the remaining EXP. The money from those runs can fund Kiryu's own upgrades afterward. If you're only earning achievements, stop once the actual requirements are complete rather than spending hours on a grind you never needed.
