Yakuza Kiwami: Unlocking and Beating Jo Amon
All right, let's get into Amon. If you've been working through the substories and restoring Dragon, this is where all of that preparation comes together.
The first thing I want to make clear is that emptying his health bar once does not finish this fight. There is a second phase, and it is dangerous enough that you don't want to reach it with three healing drinks left and assume you're nearly done.
Getting the challenge
Amon is part of The Last Assassin, substory 46 in the English release. It becomes available late in the game, in the Finale, and you can also do it in Premium Adventure.
You need to finish the other 77 substories and complete all four ability trees. Check Soul, Technique, Body, and Dragon. Each should read 48/48.
That includes Komaki's training and the final Majima Everywhere encounter. Reaching Majima rank SSS by itself is not the same as restoring every Dragon ability.
Once the requirements are met, you'll receive the challenge and find Amon in Theater Square. Be on your own rather than walking around with Haruka. If you're still in the story, arrange to travel alone through the available story prompt. In Premium Adventure, leave her at Serena.
If nothing has appeared, check the ability totals and the substory list before you start changing the time of day or running laps around the city. A missing upgrade is a much more useful thing to look for. [The unlock requirements are listed here](https://appmedia.jp/ryugagotoku_kiwami/78199508).
What I would bring
Save before talking to him. Do your shopping first, make the save after you've prepared, and give yourself a clean place to return to if the attempt goes badly.
Fill your available inventory space with proper recovery items. Staminan Royale is a straightforward choice because it restores both health and Heat, and Kotobuki Drugs sells it for ¥12,000. Bring stronger full-recovery drinks if you have them, but you don't need to spend Coliseum points on a mountain of expensive medicine just to make this possible. [Kotobuki's stock](https://strategywiki.org/wiki/Yakuza_Kiwami/Stores) gives you a regular shop option.
For equipment, pay attention to blade defense and the ability to guard against knives. Gauntlets or High-Tech Arm Guards are useful choices. High-Tech Shin Guards are another option because Amon's sweeping recovery attacks can interrupt you after you knock him down.
You only have so many equipment slots. Decide what problem you're trying to solve instead of copying a list of five accessories and discovering you can't wear them all at once.
A Sacrifice Stone is a useful safety net if you have one. Equip it. Carrying it in the inventory does not provide its protection. It saves you from a fatal hit and restores your health, then breaks. A Stone of Enduring also protects against a fatal blow, but it doesn't give you the same full recovery, so be ready to heal immediately afterward. [The accessory descriptions](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/181171-yakuza-kiwami/faqs/75194/accessories) explain the difference.
Don't build the whole attempt around surviving at almost no health unless you're deliberately doing a high-risk damage setup. For a first clear, having enough health to survive a mistake is more useful than a damage bonus you lose the entire fight trying to exploit.
The Demonfire Dagger
By the time you've finished Majima Everywhere, you'll have the Demonfire Dagger. Its unlimited durability makes it useful for a weapon-based approach, including guarding and using the knife Heat Action you've learned from Majima.
It is an option, not a requirement to damage Amon. Its ordinary attack rating is low, so the reason to bring it is its durability and moves, not because every basic slash suddenly becomes your strongest attack. [The weapon's stats](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Demonfire_Dagger) are worth separating from its reputation.
If your plan is Tiger Drop, put the weapon away. You need to be in the correct barehanded Dragon setup for the counter. Switching styles while still holding something and wondering why the move won't come out is an avoidable problem.
The first phase
Amon begins with a fighting style based on Kiryu's Dragon. He has quick combinations, counters, and enough damage to punish you for attacking without an opening.
Let him commit first. Hold your fighting stance, watch his approach, and use Tiger Drop just before a strike reaches you. On the default PlayStation controls that is R1 with Triangle at the correct moment. On Xbox it is RB with Y.
The timing matters more than repeatedly pressing the button. Face him, stay close enough for his strike to reach, and counter the attack you can actually see starting. If he's only moving around, you don't yet have an attack to counter.
If you aren't comfortable with that timing, use Rush to move around his combinations and build Heat through close dodges. Attack after his sequence finishes, then leave before he can answer. A few safe hits are better than one long combination that gives him a free counter halfway through it.
Watch for his backward flip and explosive attack. Don't stand still trying to block the explosion. Move out of its path rather than treating it like an ordinary punch. His first phase can punish you particularly hard if you keep attacking into his guard. [This fight breakdown](https://dswiipspwikips3.jp/yakuza-kiwami/cheats-data/amon.html) shows both phases and the attacks to watch.
Adding Time for Destruction
If you want to improve the damage from your counters, use Beast's Time for Destruction before switching back to Dragon.
Build enough Heat to reach Climax Heat. Switch to Beast, hold the left trigger, and press the right trigger to activate the ability. With default controls, that is L2 followed by R2 on PlayStation, or LT followed by RT on Xbox.
It spends your Heat for a temporary attack boost. The boost continues after you change styles, so you can return to Dragon and use it with Tiger Drop.
Don't spend the whole buff chasing him while swinging at empty space. Get the timing down first, then add the buff. The ordinary counter is already useful without turning the fight into a perfect sequence of item use and style changes. [CyricZ's Amon section](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/181171-yakuza-kiwami/faqs/75194/finale-substories) explains this combination.
When the first health bar finally empties
Back away.
Amon gets up again, restores his health, and begins the knife phase. His recovery includes a spinning attack, so standing over him to celebrate is a good way to start the next phase on the floor.
Use the transition to check your own health. The remaining fight is not a little finishing sequence. You still need to deal with another full set of health bars.
The knife phase
This is closer to fighting a much more dangerous Mad Dog Majima. His reach and speed change, and a sequence of knife hits can take away far more health than you expect.
Don't keep the same distance you used against his punches and assume it is safe. His lunging attacks reach farther. Give yourself room to see the approach, and heal before you're in range of dying to a single mistake.
Tiger Drop still works, but missed timing is expensive here. Use attacks you can recognize rather than trying to counter every fast slash. If you're getting caught repeatedly, switch to a safer Heat Action approach instead of losing the same way over and over. [This English Amon guide](https://twinfinite.net/guides/yakuza-kiwami-how-to-beat-jo-amon/) also covers the change from the Dragon phase to the knife phase.
Essence of Sumo Slapping is useful because you can start it while facing him from a little distance. Have Heat available, hold your stance in Dragon, and look for the Heat Action prompt. It lets you inflict damage without first walking into the middle of his knife combination.
After knocking him down, move away or prepare to defend. He can spin as he gets up. Landing a Heat Action does not mean the next few seconds are automatically safe.
If you brought the Demonfire Dagger, its knife Heat Action gives you another damage option. Put it away again when returning to a Tiger Drop strategy. Keep those two approaches separate enough that you always know which move your next input will produce.
A guarded approach with blade protection and sweep protection is also possible. Let the attack finish, take a controlled opening, and avoid trying to interrupt his entire sequence with ordinary punches. [This equipment-focused strategy](https://kouryakutsushin.com/ryu-kiwami/%E4%BA%9C%E9%96%80%E4%B8%88%20%E6%94%BB%E7%95%A5) explains why those defensive accessories matter.
If you're only trying to get the clear
You can do this on Easy. Amon Defeated does not require Legend, and there is no need to combine your first Amon attempt with the hardest difficulty unless that is the challenge you want.
On Easy, repeated Heat Actions are particularly effective. On higher settings, repeating the same Heat Action loses effectiveness, so use Tiger Drop and different Heat Actions instead of relying on one animation for the entire fight.
You can refill Heat with medicine. You can heal before you're almost dead. You can pause and check equipment. Use the tools the game gives you.
The one thing I wouldn't do is save all your good medicine for some imaginary later fight while dying here with a full inventory. This is exactly the kind of encounter those items are for.
After the win
Beating Amon finishes The Last Assassin, awards Amon Defeated, and gives you Amon Sunglasses, an accessory that improves weapon damage. With the other substories already completed, this also finishes the substory set.
Save afterward. If you're preparing clear data for New Game+, make sure it includes this progress rather than an older save from before the fight.
For this one, preparation is most of the advice. Arrive with the full moveset, enough medicine for both phases, and a plan for the knife attacks. Then take the openings he gives you instead of trying to end the whole fight in one combination.
