Yakuza Kiwami: Pocket Circuit
All right, Pocket Circuit is back, and this is one where having the right parts makes a lot more difference than repeatedly hoping the same car will finish the race.
There are fourteen main tournaments, the races connected to The Fighter's Successor, a separate race during Searching for the Present, and three races against Majima. I'm covering all of them here, along with where the important parts come from and what to check when a setup isn't working.
Getting started
From Chapter 4, go to Pocket Circuit Stadium on Shichifuku Street West. Speak to Pocket Circuit Fighter and agree to help find his successor. He gives you the Golem Tiger and your starting parts.
Talk to him again to customize the car, enter tournaments, or run a test. You need to start The Fighter's Successor to open the activity, but you do not need to finish the whole substory before racing in the tournaments.
That distinction matters. Some of the recommended setups for the later substory races use parts that only become available after winning the Champion Cup. Don't stop at the first difficult substory opponent and assume you're supposed to beat him with the starter car before you can do anything else.
How to use these builds
The parts below are listed in this order:
Tires / Frame / Motor / Gears / Battery.
Suspension, stabilizers, and bumpers are listed separately. If an attachment isn't listed, remove it. Leaving a heavy attachment on from the previous race can change the cost and performance of an otherwise correct setup.
The car drives itself. You are choosing the equipment, watching for instability, and deciding whether to boost. These are published reference setups, not a guarantee that every attempt will play out identically. A car can still go off the track, and the same build can finish on another attempt.
Try the listed setup without unnecessary boosts first. If you boost directly into a corner or a jump, you're adding another reason for it to leave the course.
When the warning appears, use the stabilizing input shown on your screen. Stop once the car settles rather than emptying your energy gauge out of habit. That gauge is something you may need again later in the race.
Where the parts come from
The shop inside the stadium expands as you win tournaments. These are the main shopping checkpoints:
• After the Introductory Race: Plus-tier equipment and Light Suspension.
• After the Beginner Cup: Extra-tier equipment and the Side Stabilizer.
• After the Standard Cup: Super-tier equipment, Boost Plus Gears, Medium Suspension, and the Bumper Plate.
• After the Advanced Cup: most Ultra-tier equipment and the Godspeed Motor.
• After the Expert Race: Ultra Boost Gears and Ultra Godspeed Gears.
• After the Champion Cup: Ultra Godspeed Motor and Ultra High Torque Motor.
There are exceptions, so check the shops outside the stadium too:
Ebisu Pawn sells Rubber Frame Plus, Ultra Rocket Frame, Side Stabilizer 2.0, Heavy Suspension, and the New Bumper Plate. The Heavy Suspension costs ¥14,980. The New Bumper Plate is a different part from the ordinary Bumper Plate, so don't substitute it automatically.
The weapons dealer in Purgatory sells Super Slick Tires and Power Motor Plus. Purgatory opens through the Chapter 5 story. If you're trying to finish everything as soon as Chapter 4 begins, a build using those tires gives you a reason to come back after progressing the story.
Beam sells High Torque Motor 2.0 and, later, Boost Gears. You need access to its weapons shop, not just the normal DVD counter.
Locker E5 contains the Cool Striker car. Locker J2 contains the Metal Frame. The E5 key is in Pink Alley, in the narrow passage just north of Karaokekan. J2 is inside Pocket Circuit Stadium near the entrance and track-side tables.
For the harder builds below, the main purchases to plan around are the ¥50,000 Godspeed Motor after the Advanced Cup and the ¥120,000 Ultra Godspeed Motor after the Champion Cup. The ordinary Godspeed Motor, Godspeed Motor Mark II, and Ultra Godspeed Motor are three different parts.
The fourteen tournament builds
Introductory Race
Eight laps. Cost limit: 20.
Slim Tires / Speed Frame / Speed Motor / Balanced Gears / High Speed Battery.
No attachments. These are basic shop parts, so you don't need to win a later race to build the car for the first one.
Little Racer Cup
Eight laps. Cost limit: 20.
Slim Plus Tires / Speed Plus Frame / Speed Plus Motor / Balanced Plus Gears / Regular Battery.
No attachments. Buy the Plus parts after winning the introductory event.
Rookie Race
Twelve laps. Cost limit: 25.
Slim Plus Tires / Speed Plus Frame / Speed Plus Motor / Balanced Plus Gears / Regular Battery.
No attachments. You can keep the Little Racer setup for this one.
Beginner Cup
Eight laps. Cost limit: 25.
Spiked Plus Tires / Speed Plus Frame / Speed Plus Motor / Balanced Plus Gears / High Capacity Battery.
No attachments. Change both the tires and battery before entering.
Amateur Cup
Eight laps. Cost limit: 25.
Extra Slick Tires / Extra Balanced Frame / Extra Speed Motor / Extra Balanced Gears / Regular Battery.
No attachments. These Extra parts become available after the Beginner Cup.
Standard Cup
Eight laps. Cost limit: 30.
Extra Slick Tires / Extra Metal Frame / Extra Speed Motor / Extra Balanced Gears / High Capacity Battery.
Add the Side Stabilizer. No suspension or bumper.
Intermediate Cup
Eight laps. Cost limit: 30.
Super Slick Tires / Super Speed Frame / Super Speed Motor / Boost Plus Gears / High Capacity Battery.
Add Medium Suspension. No stabilizer or bumper. Remember that the Super Slick Tires come from Purgatory's weapons dealer rather than the stadium shop.
Advanced Cup
Twelve laps. Cost limit: 30.
Super Slick Tires / Super Speed Frame / Super Speed Motor / Boost Plus Gears / High Capacity Battery.
Add Medium Suspension. No stabilizer or bumper. This keeps the Intermediate setup, but the longer race still needs its own win.
Pro-am Race
Eight laps. Cost limit: 35.
Ultra Slick Tires / Ultra Speed Frame / Super Speed Motor / Extra Boost Gears / High Speed Battery.
Add Medium Suspension. No stabilizer or bumper.
Elite Cup
Eight laps. Cost limit: 35.
Ultra Slick Tires / Ultra Rocket Frame / Godspeed Motor / Extra Boost Gears / High Speed Battery.
Add Medium Suspension. No stabilizer or bumper. Pick up the Ultra Rocket Frame from Ebisu Pawn.
Expert Race
Eight laps. Cost limit: 40.
Ultra Slick Tires / Rubber Frame Plus / Godspeed Motor / Super Boost Gears / High Capacity Battery.
Add Medium Suspension. No stabilizer or bumper. Yes, this uses Rubber Frame Plus rather than automatically choosing the most expensive frame you own.
Master Cup
Twelve laps. Cost limit: 40.
Ultra Spiked Tires / Ultra Rocket Frame / Godspeed Motor / Ultra Boost Gears / High Capacity Battery.
Add Heavy Suspension. No stabilizer or bumper. The Ultra Boost Gears should now be available after the Expert Race.
Champion Cup
Four laps. Cost limit: 45.
Ultra Spiked Tires / Ultra Rubber Frame / Godspeed Motor / Ultra Boost Gears / Regular Battery.
Add Heavy Suspension and the Bumper Plate. No stabilizer.
If you're staying on the track but losing on time, there is another commonly used setup:
Ultra Spiked Tires / Ultra Metal Frame / Godspeed Motor / Ultra Balanced Gears / Regular Battery, with Heavy Suspension and the Bumper Plate.
That alternative is usually paired with a boost around 36 to 37 seconds. Treat the timing as a reference for that specific build, not a universal instruction for every car. Look at where your car is on the course before boosting.
2005 King of Speed Cup
Twelve laps. Cost limit: 45.
Ultra Slim Tires / Ultra Metal Frame / Ultra Godspeed Motor / Ultra Boost Gears / High Capacity Battery.
Add Heavy Suspension and the Bumper Plate. No stabilizer.
Buy the Ultra Godspeed Motor after winning the Champion Cup. This is the last main tournament. Winning all fourteen earns The Dragon of Pocket Circuit Reborn!
The Fighter's Successor
This is substory 56. After the stadium introduction, go to the Theater Square Club SEGA and meet the old Pocket Circuit group. Hideki challenges you to a race.
Hideki's build:
Slim Tires / Speed Frame / Speed Motor / Balanced Gears / High Speed Battery.
No attachments.
After beating him, go to Stardust on Tenkaichi Street. Look for the interaction outside and speak to Takuma about racing again. Return to the stadium. Before the race with Takuma, Fighter challenges you himself.
Fighter's build:
Ultra Slick Tires / Ultra Metal Frame / Ultra Godspeed Motor / Ultra Boost Gears / High Capacity Battery.
Add Heavy Suspension and the Bumper Plate. No stabilizer.
Takuma's build:
Ultra Spiked Tires / Ultra Metal Frame / Ultra Godspeed Motor / Ultra Boost Gears / High Capacity Battery.
Add Heavy Suspension, the Bumper Plate, and the Side Stabilizer.
These last two are late-part setups. Use the tournament route to get the Ultra Godspeed Motor before returning if you want to follow them exactly. You aren't locked out of the substory because you left it unfinished while winning the cups.
Finish the races and remaining conversation to complete the substory. The rewards include Godspeed Motor Mark II and the ability to make your own courses.
Searching for the Present
This is substory 50, available from Chapter 7 while Haruka is accompanying Kiryu. The girl at Children's Park needs help choosing a present. One possibility is a Limited Edition Golem Tiger, which Fighter offers as a racing prize.
This is a different race from his challenge in The Fighter's Successor. Use this setup:
Ultra Spiked Tires / Ultra Metal Frame / Ultra High Torque Motor / Ultra Boost Gears / High Capacity Battery.
Add Light Suspension and the Side Stabilizer. No bumper.
The motor here is Ultra High Torque, not Ultra Godspeed. That is an easy mistake to make if you're moving directly from one of the other races.
There are other presents in this substory, so the race is not the only way to complete the search. I'm including it for anyone who wants the racing option as well.
The three Majima races
Majima has to be active in the city. If he's absent because of a chapter restriction or a pending rank-up event, entering the stadium repeatedly won't make the race appear.
Progress the ordinary tournaments and the Pocket Circuit substory as well as Majima Everywhere. His first invitation comes through Nishida's “Looking for the boss” email. Go toward the parts-shop area inside the stadium to trigger the encounter.
Guard Dog of the Circuit:
Slim Plus Tires / Speed Plus Frame / Speed Plus Motor / Balanced Plus Gears / Regular Battery.
No attachments. Winning the first race unlocks Flash Step Reborn.
Vicious Dog of the Circuit:
Ultra Spiked Tires / Ultra Metal Frame / Ultra Godspeed Motor / Ultra Boost Gears / High Capacity Battery.
Add Heavy Suspension. No stabilizer or bumper. Leave and return to the stadium when Majima is active for this second challenge. There isn't a separate email for it.
Mad Dog of the Circuit:
Ultra Spiked Tires / Ultra Metal Frame / Ultra Godspeed Motor / Ultra Boost Gears / Regular Battery.
Add Heavy Suspension and the Bumper Plate. No stabilizer.
The third race is connected to “A photo from the boss.” Beat the first two before expecting the final one. Winning earns Dragon's Speed Reborn.
For the last race, change the battery back to Regular. The final setup is not simply the second setup with a bumper attached.
If the car keeps failing
Check the exact part names first. Plus, Extra, Super, and Ultra aren't interchangeable, and Godspeed Motor Mark II isn't another name for Ultra Godspeed Motor.
Check the attachments next. The game may still have something fitted from your previous race. A setup that says no stabilizer means removing the one you used against Takuma.
If the car runs out of power, check the battery. If it repeatedly leaves the track, watch where it happens and try a run without boosting. If it stays on the track but can't catch anyone, you have a speed problem rather than a stability problem.
Change one thing at a time if you're experimenting. Switching the motor, gears, tires, and boost timing together makes it much harder to tell which change helped.
Don't abandon a stable setup just because another car leads early. Give it a full attempt. On the other hand, if the same failure keeps happening at the same place, stop repeating it without checking the build.
Once the fourteen cups are won, check the substory races and Majima separately. Finishing the tournament menu doesn't automatically finish Fighter's story or restore the Dragon abilities attached to Majima's challenges.
