# Yakuza Kiwami 2: Substories from Chapters 1–5
All right, here's the first stretch of Kiwami 2's substory route, covering the stories that open in Chapters 1–5. Each entry has its unlock, starting point, and the steps that actually finish it. The later street stories, Four Shine outings, and Amons follow in the next reply.
This covers Kiwami 2, not the original PS2 Yakuza 2. There are substory spoilers throughout, including the Amon fights.
## Before you start
- The chapter headings are unlock points, not deadlines. You can return later and clean up in Premium Adventure.
- Buy Substory Finder in the Life Skills menu. Gray speech bubbles show available stories and blue ones show ongoing steps. Minigame prerequisites, emails, and business events still need to be triggered.
- Check the actual Substories section of the Completion List. There are 75 stories. The extra “complete everything” line is a completion check, not a hidden 76th quest.
- From Chapter 3, taxis let you travel between Kamurocho and Sotenbori. Don't assume you have to wait until the main story sends you back.
- For an absent character, check the chapter, earlier stories, time of day, and whether Haruka needs to be with you. Leave the area and return when a chain needs another conversation.
- Read rewarded primers and scrolls from your inventory, then check the ability menu. Finding a book and spending the experience needed for its move are separate steps.
I'd open Kamiyama's shop, finish Komaki's training, and start Four Shine early. Those give you equipment, combat tools, money, and progress toward several other substories while you're clearing the streets. [Substory overview and chapter gates](https://dswiipspwikips3.jp/yakuza-kiwami2/substories/)
## Chapter 1: Kamurocho
These become available during the search for Daigo, once you're free to explore.
### 20. Living the American Dream
Clear all three Beginner Challenge courses at the Yoshida Batting Center, then leave the cage to meet Dandy Johnson. His challenge needs five HOME RUNS from ten pitches. Ordinary hits aren't enough. Save first: losing costs ¥10,000.
His pitch types repeat in this order: 2-Seamer, Fastball, Freedom Fastball, Slider, American Dream, Shootball, Fastball, Soaring Eagle, Shootball, American Dream. Their positions change. Freedom Fastball needs an immediate swing; American Dream returns to its original target despite the spiral; Soaring Eagle rises one square. Win for the Signed Ball. Later, recruit Dandy for Majima Construction on the batting-center roof. [Batting challenge](https://neoseeker.com/yakuza-kiwami-2/walkthrough/Substories16-30)
### 21. Against All Odds
Approach the confrontation outside Lullaby Mahjong on Tenkaichi Street and agree to substitute for the player. You're starting with only 1,000 points, so this is a comeback match rather than a normal fresh game.
The easy route is a Peerless Tile. There's one behind the shelving in the office one floor below Lullaby Mahjong. Save, enter the match, use the tile when offered, then declare Tsumo when the winning hand arrives. You can retry without a penalty. Reward: ¥100,000. [Mahjong setup](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/218734-yakuza-kiwami-2/faqs/76366/chapter-1-substories)
### 24. A Pervy Peddler
Go into the small backlot off Tenkaichi Alley, behind the shops, and rescue Kamiyama from the men threatening him. Defeating the group finishes the story and opens his shop. Remember this location: he sells weapons and videos, repairs weapons, and expands his stock as you sell him equipment. [Kamiyama encounter](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/A_Pervy_Peddler)
## Chapter 2: Sotenbori
Finish the initial street encounter and introduction to Kurokawa, then start exploring.
### 43. Lend a Claw
Speak to Satonaka beside the UFO Catcher at Club SEGA. Win a Robo Manager and give it to him for ¥30,000. Go to Iwao Bridge and pick up the discarded doll, then return to the arcade. This time he needs a Robo Chief. Catch that one and hand it over for an Italian Ring. Leave and revisit once the next event is available to receive the Gold Robo CEO and finish. Don't stop after the first gift. [Full doll chain](https://neoseeker.com/yakuza-kiwami-2/walkthrough/Substories31-45)
### 59. A Nose for Music
Talk to the sneezing guitarist on Bishamon Bridge. Give him Pocket Tissues, available from Poppo or the Grand's street promoter. He becomes an ally. After Clan Creator opens, find him near the southwest end of Iwao Bridge to recruit him separately for Majima Construction. [Guitarist request](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/A_Nose_for_Music)
### 60. Helping the Barker
Find the barker being harassed on the eastern end of Sotenbori Street, near Kani Douraku. Step in and defeat the thug. The barker becomes an ally, which also makes his associated assistance Heat Action available to learn. This is a quick fight, with no later delivery or spending requirement. [Barker location](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/218734-yakuza-kiwami-2/faqs/76366/chapter-2-substories)
### 65. No Means No
Speak to Kazuha, the masked woman outside the club near Ebisu Pawn on East Shofukucho Street. When two men start bothering her, intervene and beat them. Finish the conversation to make her an ally. You don't need to buy any service or pay the men. [Kazuha encounter](https://neoseeker.com/yakuza-kiwami-2/walkthrough/Substories61-76)
### 66. A Mother's Love
Find the older woman on the eastern part of the river's south-side walkway. Agree to find her amulet. Go down to the lower riverside path nearby and inspect the sparkling item on the ground, just northwest of her position. Return it to Yoriko to complete the story and gain another ally. [Lost amulet](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/A_Mother's_Love)
### 67. The Sharpest Blade
Visit Komian and speak to the receptionist or order food, then try leaving. The chef needs a Butcher Knife. Buy one at Sotenbori's Ebisu Pawn or collect the free one from Sotenbori locker F2. Return to Komian and speak to the receptionist to hand it over. The owner becomes your ally. A random blade won't replace the requested knife. [Knife sources](https://dswiipspwikips3.jp/yakuza-kiwami2/substories/substories07.html)
### 68. Overcoming Your Fears
Talk to the nervous male clerk in the northeastern Poppo on Sotenbori Street. Talk to him three times to work through his conversations until he gains confidence and becomes an ally. Purchases aren't required. If the next conversation hasn't appeared, step away and come back; don't spend a fortune trying to buy the friendship. [Clerk conversations](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/218734-yakuza-kiwami-2/faqs/76366/chapter-2-substories)
## Chapter 3: both cities
The five Kamurocho ally stories below can be started by taking a taxi back. You don't have to wait for Chapter 5.
### 32. Befriending the Barker
At the southern entrance to Senryo Avenue, near East Showa Street, help the barker being threatened by a thug. Win the fight and finish the conversation. He becomes an ally, opening the way to learn Essence of Sign Sweeper. [Early unlock and location](https://dswiipspwikips3.jp/yakuza-kiwami2/substories/substories04.html)
### 33. Mama Under Attack
Enter Earth Angel in the Champion District. Defend Mama from the customer harassing her and win the fight outside. You'll receive a Tauriner and gain her as an ally. Once Clan Creator is available, return and speak to her again if you want to recruit her for Majima Construction too. [Earth Angel encounter](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Mama_Under_Attack)
### 34. A Soupy Sidekick
Eat at Kyushu No. 1 Star to start the owner's conversation, then finish every item on its menu. You can spread this across visits. Speak with the owner after completing the menu to make him an ally. Ordering the same bowl repeatedly doesn't replace eating all the different dishes. [Restaurant requirement](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/A_Soupy_Sidekick)
### 36. Knee Deep in Trouble
Inspect the occupied toilet stall in Children's Park on West Shichifuku Street. The man needs fresh underwear. Buy Pure White Briefs at Don Quijote, return to the stall, and deliver them. Baba becomes an ally. You need the briefs, not a second purchase of Green Trunks. [Baba's request](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Knee_Deep_in_Trouble)
### 37. A High Energy Worker
Visit the West Shichifuku Poppo and start the clerk's conversation. Talk to him seven times in total, working through the conversations until you're considered a regular and he becomes an ally. There is no expensive shopping quota: after the introductory interaction, conversation advances the chain. Don't burn ¥100,000 buying things you don't need. [Clerk progression](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/218734-yakuza-kiwami-2/faqs/76366/chapter-3-substories)
### 56. In the Name of Art
On Iwao Bridge in Sotenbori, agree to model for Mizuno. At the studio, the intended poses are raised arms and a roar, a cute-maid pose, then a bodybuilder pose. Other choices lead back toward the required sequence, so they won't ruin the story. Defeat Poison Mitsuo and his assistants afterward. Reward: Conservative Cell Phone. [Photo-shoot sequence](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/In_the_Name_of_Art)
### 58. Albatross Akagi's Challenge
At Yokobori Golf Center, clear Beginner and Intermediate Closest to the Pin to unlock Advanced. Then speak to Akagi himself and accept his challenge. You need at least 300 points over the ten shots. Scoring 300 in a normal game started through the receptionist does NOT finish his substory.
Aim for consistent scoring landings instead of risking every shot on a hole-in-one. Watch the power and impact markers, and adjust for the obstacles on each hole. The layout repeats, so use failed attempts to learn it. Reward: Albatross Akagi's Club. [Challenge trigger and target](https://neoseeker.com/yakuza-kiwami-2/walkthrough/Substories46-60)
## Chapter 4: Sotenbori
These street stories open after bringing Sayama to Aoi. Four Shine also starts in this chapter; its seven substories have their own section below.
### 44. Overwhelming Affluence
Bump into Kanematsu near Don Quijote's southern entrance. Ask whether he's okay for the better initial payout. Find him at Club SEGA and accept the Virtua Fighter 2 challenge. Beat his three-win streak by winning FOUR fights, through Pai, then quit if you want. Winning earns ¥100,000; losing still lets the story continue.
Next, intervene in his debt collection at Iwao Bridge, leave, and return for the repayment scene. Finally find him near the southern Shofukucho taxi. Give ¥100 for Staminan X, ¥10,000 for a Strength Ring, or ¥100,000 for a Charismatic Photo. Your choice changes the reward. [Kanematsu's encounters](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Overwhelming_Affluence)
### 45. The Charming Councilor
On West Shofukucho Street near Poppo, rescue the suited men from the thug and receive Councilor Saeki's Book. Give the book to the discouraged man by Iwao Bridge. Return to the original West Shofukucho area for the next scene, then defeat Saeki's aide. Reward: Modded Model Gun. [Councilor route](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/218734-yakuza-kiwami-2/faqs/76366/chapter-4-substories)
### 46. That's No Joke
Speak to the young comedian in the gray hat at Stijl. Work through his attempts to find a comedy partner, then leave the bar. A thug confronts you outside; beat him to finish the story. The conversation choices aren't a permanent-failure trap. Later, the two performers can be recruited separately for Majima Construction. [Comedy encounter](https://neoseeker.com/yakuza-kiwami-2/walkthrough/Substories46-60)
### 52. Crazy for Cathy
Inspect the parked car southwest of Iwao Bridge on East Shofukucho Street. Defeat Hiroto and the other men who confront you. Using a car Heat Action is an option, but unlike the original Yakuza 2, it isn't required for proper completion here. Reward: ¥50,000. [Kiwami 2 completion distinction](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Crazy_for_Cathy)
## Chapter 5: Kamurocho and the longer training chains
### 1. Be My Baby
Approach the men blocking Pink Street just east of Kotobuki Drugs. Beat the first group, accept the invitation that follows, then finish the club sequence and second fight. Don't stop after the street battle. The second group includes Gondawara, so go in with enough health for another round. Later, find him on the raised landing on Theater Square's east side to recruit him. [Gondawara's story](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Be_My_Baby)
### 2. The Legendary Dragon
Find the suspiciously familiar pair north of Earth Angel in the Champion District. After their first scene, go to Jewel on Shichifuku Street, west of Kanrai. Confront and defeat both impostors there. The first conversation alone doesn't clear it; the fight outside Jewel does. [Impostor route](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/The_Legendary_Dragon)
### 5. Supporting Sunflower
Speak to Suenaga at the south end of Nakamichi Street by Showa Street. Donate at least ¥50,000, directly or through a Poppo ATM, then talk about Hayato. Walk away for Haruka's message and Kiryu's call. Meet Mogusa in Theater Square to collect Pochitaro, bring the dog to Suenaga, then step away for the follow-up message. Speak to her once more to finish. Reward: Picture of Pochitaro. [First Sunflower request](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Supporting_Sunflower)
### 6. Renovating Sunflower
After #5, return to Suenaga and contribute ¥250,000 for the roof repair. Speak to her again when the contractor demands more money. Meet the contractor in the northeast corner of the Champion District and defeat the man he brings in. Return to Suenaga to close the story. You receive the contractor's card and the Children's Drawing. [Renovation chain](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Renovating_Sunflower)
### 7. Sunflower in Bloom
After #6, speak to Suenaga about her departure and the children's playground. Kiryu calls the same contractor. Meet him in the same Champion District corner, defeat the yakuza threatening him, and return to Suenaga after Haruka's message. Rewards include the Handmade Scarf, Sunflower Amulet, and Picture of Haruka 1. Then find Suenaga outside Four Shine to recruit the Headmistress. The separate donation achievement requires ¥1 million total; finishing this chain alone isn't that milestone. [Sunflower conclusion](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/218734-yakuza-kiwami-2/faqs/76366/chapter-5-substories)
### 8. Mr. Try and Hit Me
Find the challenger in Shichifuku Parking Lot, east of Kanrai. Pay ¥5,000 and land one hit within 30 seconds. You don't need to win a full fight. Keep him near the edge of the lot and use short attacks rather than finishing a combo while he slips away. One successful hit earns ¥30,000. [Challenge rules](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Mr._Try_and_Hit_Me)
### 9. An Eccentric Errand
Meet Masa near the northwestern Smile Burger. Follow his email to Public Park 3 in Tenkaichi Alley and inspect the bench for key C1. Open Kamurocho locker C1, take the Green Box to the man behind Shine in Pink Alley, then go to the stairs by the east side of Theater Square's Club SEGA. Fight the man in red, catch up with Masa, and beat him too. Reward: ¥150,000. [Complete errand route](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/An_Eccentric_Errand)
### 19. We're All In This Together
Meet the job hunters at the west end of Suppon Street. Pick up the dropped amulet and return it to them near the Park Boulevard modeling building. Agree to help with their interview.
Choose the answers about: a polite introduction; being a team player; helping people get along; being a diligent worker; experiencing other cultures; a future-proof industry; a positive workplace attitude; having worked in real estate; wanting to start an orphanage; and thanking the interviewer. Wrong answers send you back through that section rather than ruining the quest. Reward: Japanese Diver's Watch. [Interview sequence](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/218734-yakuza-kiwami-2/faqs/76366/chapter-5-substories)
### 22. To the Dragon Palace
At Tenkaichi Street and Tenkaichi Alley, help the homeless man being threatened. Defeat the attackers and accept his ride. This opens Dragon Palace on Park Boulevard, including its gambling rooms, arms dealer, and the training area needed for #25–27. [Dragon Palace access](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/To_the_Dragon_Palace)
### 25. An Eye for Work
After #22, take Dragon Palace's elevator to the fourth floor and spar with Cyclops Oba. Weapons, recovery items, and Heat Actions are disabled, so heal and equip your gear beforehand. Block or evade his offense, then punish the opening rather than constantly striking into his guard. Win for the Flattening Throw Primer. [Oba and sparring restrictions](https://dswiipspwikips3.jp/yakuza-kiwami2/substories/substories03.html)
### 26. An Eye for Meat
After #25, revisit Oba. Buy a Luxury Yakiniku Bento from the West Shichifuku Poppo and deliver it. Beat him in another sparring match under the same restrictions. This gives TWO books, the Tiger Crash Primer and Dynamic Throw Primer. Read both afterward. [Oba's food request](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/An_Eye_for_Meat)
### 27. An Eye for Power
After #26, bring Oba a Staminan XX, sold at Kotobuki Drugs. Defeat him a third time. He's stronger now, and you still can't rely on healing items during the bout, so prepare before talking to him. Reward: Mighty Primer. Finishing also sends him back into the Coliseum fighter pool. [Final Oba request](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/An_Eye_for_Power)
### 28. Feel the Heat!
After the Chapter 5 shopping sequence, leave Serena with Sayama while heading toward Purgatory. Komaki's pupil gives you the invitation. Visit Komaki in the Champion District's vacant lot, activate Extreme Heat Mode during his lesson, and defeat the training enemies. This is the introduction that unlocks Extreme Heat Mode, not just another optional street fight. [Komaki introduction](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Feel_the_Heat!)
### 29. Komaki Fist Reversal
Return to Komaki after #28. During the lesson, stand still without holding guard or fighting stance. Press Heavy Attack when the Heat prompt appears as an enemy attacks. Demonstrate the reversal, then clear the remaining enemies. Check the ability menu afterward so the technique is actually purchased and usable. [Reversal controls](https://dswiipspwikips3.jp/yakuza-kiwami2/substories/substories03.html)
### 30. Komaki Firearm Flip
After #29, take Komaki's next lesson. Approach an armed enemy, hold fighting stance, and use Heavy Attack when the Heat Action is available. Finish the training fight. The stance requirement is the important difference from the previous lesson. Unlock the move afterward for dealing with gun users. [Firearm lesson](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Komaki_Firearm_Flip)
### 31. Duel With the Mentor
After #30, challenge Komaki himself. There are no weapons, items, or Heat Actions in this fight. Go in healed and use defensive openings: block or parry his attack, then counter with a short combo or charged strike. Don't keep swinging after he starts countering, especially once his red aura appears. Win for a Peerless Tile, useful if #21 is still unfinished. [Mentor battle](https://dswiipspwikips3.jp/yakuza-kiwami2/substories/substories04.html)
### 35. Exhausted on the Job
Once you can enter the Kamurocho Hills construction site, speak to the worker sitting near the route to Purgatory. Give him an energy drink such as Tauriner or a Toughness drink. He becomes an ally. After Clan Creator opens, speak to him outside on Park Boulevard to recruit him for the construction team too. [Worker request](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Exhausted_on_the_Job)
### 42. Kiryu the Bouncer
Speak to the young man on the east side of Theater Square who mistakes Kiryu for a bouncer. Go to Debolah at the square's northwest corner and talk to its bartender. That conversation completes the substory and opens Bouncer Missions. Finishing all those missions is a separate completion task; it isn't required to clear this introductory substory. [Bouncer introduction](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Kiryu_the_Bouncer)
### 61. An Ancient Rivalry
After the Chapter 5 Coliseum/Clan Creator introduction, travel to Sotenbori and approach the group near the eastern taxi at Bunzaemon Outdoor Mall. Their first fight allows throws rather than normal attacks, so grab and toss all four men.
Motoe then asks you to defeat Gensho Kawauchi in Kamurocho's Coliseum. Reach Coliseum Rank D to open the Tempest Tournament, then check opponents listed with the Jujutsu style until you draw him. Beat him, exit the tournament menu for his conversation, then return to Motoe in Sotenbori. Reward: Kawauchi's Primer. Gensho counters grabs, so fight him with strikes and movement instead of repeating the first encounter's throw-only strategy. [Kawauchi brothers](https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/An_Ancient_Rivalry), [Tempest unlock](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/218734-yakuza-kiwami-2/faqs/76366/coliseum)
That covers the early street stories and training chains. Next are the Chapter 6 onward stories, Granny's requests, all seven Four Shine substories, and the four Amon fights.
