Yakuza 0: Mr. Shakedown and money farming
All right, next is Mr. Shakedown. If you're trying to put money into abilities, properties, equipment, and everything else in Yakuza 0, this is something worth getting comfortable with. There is a way to make a lot of money from him, but I want to go through the fight first. Deliberately handing him your money doesn't help much if you can't get it back.
This is for the original Yakuza 0.
Before you start handing over money
Mr. Shakedown can take your carried cash when he beats you. Winning a rematch lets you recover what he took, along with the money he already had. If you're early in the game and barely surviving regular fights, leave him alone for now. There's nothing wrong with coming back after buying abilities and getting a better supply of healing items. I'd make a separate save before starting a farming session. Keep that save until you've recovered your money and finished the round. Test your approach with a normal win before risking a large balance. Think about the whole round: finding him, losing if you're using that method, winning the rematch, and replacing what you used.
Finding him
For Kiryu, get the Encounter Finder from substory 23, Miracle in Maharaja. Choose the black box reward. This is the disco encounter with Miracle, not the earlier Miracle substory. Equip the item when you're hunting him; it shows his position on the map.
For Majima, complete substory 58, Stadium Jumper Strut, to earn his Encounter Finder. Equip it when hunting Shakedown in Sotenbori. Majima's reward: https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Stadium_Jumper_Strut
Don't confuse the Encounter Finder with the Trouble Finder. Those have different jobs. Also, you can still fight Mr. Shakedown without the finder. It saves you the trouble of searching the streets. Finder and farming setup: https://steamsolo.com/guide/yakuza-0/
Read the attacks instead of trading hits
Give yourself room and watch what he starts doing:
- Straight charge: move sideways, let him pass, then punish the recovery.
- Standing combo: don't assume the first swing is the end. He can follow it with a kick and another blow.
- Spinning attack: stay outside its reach. The recovery gives you a better opening than trying to interrupt it.
- Knockdown: heal if necessary before his follow-up lands. Don't wait until you're standing again just out of habit.
- Yellow Heat: become more careful. He gains speed and a dangerous grabbing charge, and is harder to stagger.
For unarmed fighting, punish misses briefly, then back away. Build Heat for Heat Actions. Rush helps Kiryu stay mobile.
There are two Shakedowns in each city, alternating after victories. Repeated victories strengthen them up to a cap. Attack patterns and encounter progression: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/816306-yakuza-0/faqs/74451/mr-shakedown
The gun method
Slime Guns and Zap Guns are useful for these fights. Majima can obtain equipment through Dragon & Tiger searches, and Kiryu can buy unlocked equipment through the Kamurocho shop. Hunter's Village in Japan is a search option for the Slime Gun. Once acquired, the Slime Gun's purchase price is ¥660,000.
Bait an attack, dodge, face him again, and fire during the recovery. If the camera has swung around, correct your aim before shooting. Don't empty a gun while he's out of position or in the middle of an animation where the shots aren't damaging him. Watch his health bar so you know the shots are actually connecting. Bring spare guns and healing rather than assuming one weapon will last the entire fight. For controller layouts, use the game's Fighting Stance and Heavy Attack inputs to fire these guns. The exact buttons depend on your platform and bindings. Weapon approach: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/816306-yakuza-0/faqs/74451/mr-shakedown
Repair before the next round
Dragon & Tiger repairs used weapons. A depleted gun doesn't need to be thrown away and replaced with a brand-new one every time. Repair cost depends on how much it was used, up to half its purchase price before discounts. Majima has a Repairs Discount CP reward that halves repair costs.
Get healing and weapon charges sorted out before a deliberate loss. You don't want to be standing there with no cash and an empty gun, realizing your recovery plan needed supplies you hadn't bought yet. Repairs: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/816306-yakuza-0/faqs/74451/dragon-amp-tiger
Kiryu's Deep Pockets reward
This is the part that makes the deliberate-loss method work: Mr. Shakedown's Deep Pockets gives Kiryu 50% more than Shakedown's stated cash value when he wins.
Buy it through the Battle rewards at the Kamurocho shrine. It costs 10 CP itself, but the rewards must be purchased in order. Starting from nothing in that track, the sequence costs 6 + 6 + 8 + 10 + 10 + 10, or 50 CP total through Deep Pockets.
Majima does not have this reward. He can fight Shakedown and earn money, but don't assume Kiryu's 1.5× farming loop applies to him. CP rewards for both characters: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/816306-yakuza-0/faqs/74451/completion-points-and-the-shrine-temple
The farming loop
Once Kiryu has Deep Pockets and you can win reliably:
1. Save and finish buying supplies.
2. Lose to Shakedown so your carried money is added to his balance.
3. Find the one holding your money again.
4. Beat him and collect the increased payout.
5. Repair, restock, save the successful result, and decide whether to repeat.
For a simple example, if his displayed balance is ¥100 million before the winning fight, Deep Pockets makes the reward ¥150 million. That's the reward calculation, not a promise that every round increases your entire bankroll by exactly 50%. What he already carried, supplies, repairs, and other bonuses affect the actual totals. The main thing I would avoid is getting so focused on the number that you stop preparing. A successful round is the point to refill your weapons, replace healing, and save. Once you've made what you need, spend some of it on the upgrades or projects you were farming for in the first place.
