Yakuza 0: Dragon & Tiger equipment searches, crafting, and completion
All right, this is one of those things in Yakuza 0 that looks like a little side activity until you start trying to finish everything. You send somebody out, wait for them to come back, and get some weapons or materials. Simple enough. But if you keep sending people out without knowing what you're actually missing, this can turn into a very expensive guessing game.
So I want to break it down by what you're trying to get. Sometimes you need an actual weapon. Sometimes you need its recipe. Sometimes you're only missing one crafting material. Those are three different problems, and you shouldn't approach all three the same way.
This is for the original Yakuza 0.
What you're actually trying to complete
The equipment-related Completion List milestones are:
- Different weapons: 10, 40, 70, then 100.
- Different gear items: 10, 25, 45, then 70.
- Enemies defeated with weapons: 10, 50, then 100.
Buying ten copies of one weapon is not ten different weapons. Look at the item records and fill gaps rather than buying duplicates. Weapon kills are another counter entirely. Collecting a weapon doesn't mean you've used it to defeat anybody.
The broader combat list also asks for 40 different Heat Actions with Kiryu and 30 with Majima, so collecting different weapon categories can help with that too. Those are separate requirements, not extra Dragon & Tiger search ranks. Completion List reference: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/816306-yakuza-0/faqs/74451/completion-metrics
There are also two search-related trophies/achievements: getting the highest search result, Crazy Unbelievable Success, and obtaining every equipment part. The latter is Eye of the Dragon and Tiger. Parts means crafting materials. It does not mean every weapon and armor piece. A complete weapon collection and a complete material collection are not interchangeable. When to work on it
The system starts with Majima in Chapter 3. More options arrive in Chapters 4, 7, 11, and 15. Get familiar with it early, but save the big cleanup for later, when the destinations and agents are available and you have money to spare.
Talk to Long Hua inside the Sotenbori Dragon & Tiger to arrange searches. Choose a destination, choose an agent, inspect the possible finds, then decide how much extra money to invest. Extra funding affects the timer, success, and item chances. A displayed 99% is not a promise that the entire list will come back: the agent has limited carrying capacity.
Before collecting results, equip your search-enhancing accessories on Majima; owning them is not enough. Separate finished equipment from recipes afterward. Recipes do not count as acquired weapons.
Acquired equipment generally becomes purchasable here, with CP-reward and DLC exceptions. Do not sell irreplaceable items assuming you can buy replacements. Search and shop mechanics: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/816306-yakuza-0/faqs/74451/dragon-amp-tiger
Picking the right agent
Start with the guaranteed part. If an agent guarantees something you haven't collected, that's a much cleaner target than throwing money at a huge random pool. The lucky-find category is a separate possibility, not another guaranteed reward.
Some especially useful guaranteed finds:
- Information Dealer: Steel.
- Pilot: Quality Screw.
- Techno Musician: Printed Circuit Board.
- Political Activist: Great Serpent Skin.
- Ex-Marine: Shape Memory Alloy.
- Weapon Master: High-Voltage Battery Prototype.
- Ex-Investigator: Dragon Tear.
- Retired Army Officer: Dragon Whisker.
- Weapons Dealer: Rainbow Shard.
- Government Official: Gravity Converter Test Device.
- Ex-Special Agent: Dragon Fang.
- Merchant of Death: Eye of the Dragon.
- Pirate Captain: Mystery Stone.
The last group becomes available in Chapter 15. Before paying, compare the agent's actual target list and price with another agent at the same destination. More expensive isn't automatically more useful for the particular thing you need. Agent unlocks and guaranteed materials: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/816306-yakuza-0/faqs/74451/agents
Where to send them
Use the destination's equipment categories to narrow the search instead of treating the whole world map as one loot box. A few useful places to start:
- Japan, Local Dojo, Chapter 4: tonfa, nunchaku, and belts.
- Japan, Hunters' Village, Chapter 4: shotguns, knives, and jackets.
- West Asia, Black Market Auction, Chapter 7: shotguns, tonfa, and handguns.
- Japan, Modern Samurai, Chapter 7: swords, short swords, and longswords.
- North America, Secret Base in Nevada, Chapter 7: launchers, nunchaku, and mail.
- Japan, Blacksmiths' Village, Chapter 11: swords, daggers, and longswords.
- Japan, Hidden Ninja Village, Chapter 15: short swords, swords, and mail.
A location having the right category doesn't mean every item in that category is immediately available from every agent. Open the actual preview. If your target isn't there, change the agent or destination instead of increasing the budget blindly. Destination reference: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/816306-yakuza-0/faqs/74451/destinations
Materials: buy the easy ones first
Before you grind searches, check the shops.
Ebisu Pawn: Iron, Chain, Quality Iron, Grinding Stone, Plastic, Linen Cloth, and Indian Cotton Cloth.
Don Quijote: Screw, Spring, Magnet, Pristine Skin, and Firework Shell.
For the materials that need searching, useful starting points include:
- Lead Ingot and Sturdy Thread: Japan, Neo Japan Kinki Branch.
- Black/White Metal Powder: Japan, Local Dojo.
- Silver/Gold Metal Powder: West Europe, The Guild.
- Glass, Volcanic Rock, Obsidian: West Asia, Night Market.
- Fluorite: North America, Grand Canyon.
- Rubber: Japan, Hercules Sporting Goods.
- Dry Branch and Carved Wooden Bear: Japan, The Hanafubuki Family.
- Straw Effigy and Happy Doll: North America, Inuit Village.
Use your missing-material list to pick the next search. This is a targeted cleanup route, not a claim that these are the only places each item can appear. Full material reference: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/816306-yakuza-0/faqs/74451/parts
Crafting without wasting your rare parts
You need the recipe unlocked in the game, the required ingredients, and the crafting fee. Reading a recipe online doesn't unlock it. Some recipes also consume another finished weapon, so check the whole requirement before selling your spare equipment.
Two examples worth understanding:
Slime Gun: 8 Iron Gears, 5 Cursed Handcuffs, and 5 Jet Black Belts. One search location for its item/recipe is North America, Inuit Village.
Zap Gun: 1 Slime Gun, 9 Printed Circuit Boards, and 5 Great Serpent Skins. One search location for its item/recipe is Japan, Hunters' Village.
The Zap Gun recipe illustrates the problem with selling everything you aren't using. That Slime Gun is an ingredient, not just an old weapon.
Once you've found the recipe, you can either make the item or continue searching for a finished copy. Compare the missing materials against another search before committing. Recipes and requirements: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/816306-yakuza-0/faqs/74451/recipes
Equipment worth keeping
You don't need every expensive item just to finish the collection counters. I would separate equipment you want to use from equipment you're collecting for completion.
- Dragon Mail: high defensive values, bullet resistance, and doubled weapon durability. It's expensive, so treat it as a late-game option.
- Military Jacket: another bullet-resistant option with doubled weapon durability, much less expensive than Dragon Mail.
- Sprite Belt: doubled weapon durability, useful when you're leaning on weapons.
- High-Tech Shin Guards: protection against foot sweeps.
- Headgear: stun resistance.
- Fur Belly Warmer: reduces Heat loss from being attacked.
Resistance is not the same as invincibility. Keep healing items and don't let a good piece of gear turn into an excuse to stand still taking hits. Gear effects: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/816306-yakuza-0/faqs/74451/equipment
For searches, look into Traveler's Amulet, Benkei's Amulet, and Magic Belt. They affect search time or results. Magic Belt's recipe uses 2 Eyes of the Dragon and 10 Sacred Wood; its search location is South America, Black Market. Benkei's Amulet uses 5 Dragon Tears, 5 Yew Branches, and 30 Obsidian, with Africa, Giza: Ancient Ruins as a search location. You still need to unlock the recipe first. The order I'd use for finishing this
1. Check the current weapon, gear, and material records. Write down what's missing rather than trying to remember it.
2. Buy inexpensive missing equipment and shop-sold materials.
3. Prioritize agents whose guaranteed part fills a gap.
4. While searches run, work on other unfinished activities. There's no reason to spend the whole timer staring at the counter.
5. Craft recipes that need ingredients you already have. Keep a list of rare ingredients needed by your remaining recipes.
6. For the last few equipment gaps, compare targeted searches against crafting. Don't repeatedly chase a finished item if you already have a cheap recipe for it.
7. Check that the separate material achievement and highest-result achievement are actually unlocked. Reaching 100 weapons and 70 gear doesn't prove those are finished.
8. Once the requirements you care about are complete, stop. Collecting every possible weapon is an extra project, not the same thing as reaching the Completion List's weapon target.
My biggest advice here is to decide what each search is supposed to accomplish before you send it out. If you come back with something new, great. If you don't, you should at least know whether you were chasing a material, a recipe, or a finished piece of equipment. That keeps this from becoming an endless cycle of spending money and hoping something useful happens.
