SCP-188 is a small piece of iridium that changes the area around it. It scratches surfaces, moves dust into patterns, and makes little structures out of nearby material. The metal itself tests like ordinary iridium. Everything unusual happens around it.
It was found on a rural property in Indiana, back when an organization that eventually became part of the Foundation was handling these things. At the time it looked like a spike sticking out of the ground. It was braiding and flattening wheat around itself, although no complete pattern had emerged when it was collected.
The researchers try the usual ways of blocking an effect. Shielding doesn't stop it. Grinding the metal into powder doesn't stop it. Melting it doesn't stop it. Putting it inside concrete or lead leaves them with the same problem, except now it's carving up the material meant to keep it contained.
They eventually recast it into a small cylinder because that's easier to store and work with. Its effect can spread through the surrounding area, but the tests show a limit to how far it reaches.
The patterns change over time too. Early on, they're mostly fractals. Later there are more spirals and flowing shapes, with biological forms showing up occasionally. Some of the structures are incredibly small and complicated. There's clearly a lot of organization in what it produces, but the file doesn't establish that there's a mind behind it or a message anyone has worked out.
The resemblance to crop circles gets investigated, and the Foundation finds no connection beyond the appearance. It doesn't turn into an explanation for every strange pattern somebody finds in a field.
For now, they keep it in storage, check on it regularly, and undo the changes it's made. The researchers are still open to figuring out whether the patterns follow any consistent rules. They just don't consider a piece of metal quietly rearranging its surroundings a good reason for dangerous experiments.
