SCP-182 is a man who can no longer hear or speak, but he can experience the world through other animals, including people. He enters their minds as a passenger, borrowing their sight and hearing. He can also project his thoughts into the minds of the people whose senses he's using, which gives him a way to communicate.
He doesn't have much control over the basic ability. Any animal within ten meters becomes part of what he sees and hears automatically. He can concentrate on something further away, but thirty meters is the limit. The article doesn't describe him taking over those bodies. The danger comes from what happens to the minds he's connected to.
With prolonged exposure, nearly everybody starts experiencing hallucinations. The file gives a figure of ninety-seven percent for humans and every nonhuman test subject. Once those symptoms begin, continued exposure leads to mental collapse. Being closer makes it happen faster, and the worst cases end in permanent catatonia or brain death.
His own history is only partly explained. He has extensive scarring and says the torture that cost him his hearing and speech also brought out his abilities. The Foundation doesn't know whether somebody deliberately caused that change or whether the trauma awakened something already there. Asking about it has provoked him into accelerating the damage to his handlers.
So there are two things happening with him. His ordinary contact causes harm he can't properly control, but under distress he can also make it worse deliberately. Keeping that distinction matters. Calling him harmless leaves out the casualties, while describing everything he does as an intentional attack leaves out how little control he has over everyday contact.
The Foundation keeps him on an isolated island near Greenland, with guards receiving psychological checks and rotating off the assignment. He asks to spend twenty hours a day sedated. When that request is finally approved, he seems delighted. But while he's asleep, a doctor and several guards are caught in a sudden outbreak of intense hallucinations, with fatal results.
Afterward, SCP-182 reports terrible nightmares. The Foundation's theory is that the distress increased his effects while he was unconscious. Sleeping aids are banned. That leaves a particularly ugly situation: being around him is dangerous, isolating him makes human contact scarce, and the attempt to give him some relief makes things worse. The file ends with stricter containment, without resolving what living like that actually means for him.
