Robyn Hood and Marian have very different reactions to the same world. Robyn has spent so much of her life dealing with people hurting her or trying to control her. She can be sarcastic and defensive, and getting close to someone gives her another person she could lose. Even when she wants a connection, she doesn’t make it easy. Marian comes from Myst, where magic is an ordinary part of the world. Then she comes to Earth and gets excited about things Robyn has grown up around. Music, movies, clothes, all these things give her ways to figure out who she wants to be. That gives their relationship a lot to work with. Robyn knows how dangerous this world can be. Marian can still see possibilities in it. They’re standing in the same place, but they’re bringing completely different experiences into it. The scene where Marian has Robyn cut her hair is a good little example. Marian is deciding how she wants to look and asking Robyn to help her do it. There’s trust in that. Robyn gets to be part of something ordinary and personal with her, away from the fighting and all the expectations people have placed on her. By the end of Legend, Robyn has been treated as a hero, an enemy and a person who is supposed to fulfill somebody else’s idea of her future. Her connection with Marian gives her room to have a life beyond all of that. And Marian has her own changes happening. She’s discovering a world and making choices about herself. Put those two together and there’s room for humor, friction and closeness without either of them having to become the other person.
