**Far Cry 4: opening North Kyrat, taking the fortresses and finding Shangri-La** Kyrat's roads keep climbing, but the campaign decides when you can cross its biggest boundary. If you have reached King's Bridge and the game keeps sending you back south, more tower climbing will not solve it. You need the story mission **A Key to the North**. This guide covers that crossing, practical approaches to all four fortresses, and the four optional thangka locations. Mission names and progression spoilers follow; the ending's family revelations are left alone. **Getting through King's Bridge** A Key to the North gives you a different truck-acquisition job depending on the Golden Path leader you support. - **Amita's version:** intercept the chemical truck while it is travelling. Shoot the driver or use Vehicle Takedown to take possession. Preserve the vehicle you need rather than treating the entire convoy as an explosives target. - **Sabal's version:** take the parked truck. Clear its guards, then get behind the wheel. Drive to King's Bridge, accelerate toward the gate and jump clear when prompted. Shoot the tanker to finish breaching the entrance. Ammunition is available on the bridge if the drive has left you short. Clear the compound, disabling its alarms as you work inward. The central building contains the radio for the broadcast objective. That transmission brings a Royal Guard counterattack, including a heavy flamethrower enemy. His fuel tanks provide a vulnerable target if you can get an angle on his back. Finish the defense and meet the rebels to complete the crossing. The campaign now lets you explore northern Kyrat. Establish a convenient resupply point before heading off on a long hunting or collectible trip. A new region gets considerably easier to learn when a failed outing does not send you back across half the country. **When to tackle the four fortresses** Each fortress becomes weaker after its associated campaign milestone. You can challenge the stronger version, but waiting makes sense if the reward matters more to you than the extra fight. Take a suppressed ranged weapon, mark the defenders, and locate the alarms before choosing your first target. A high wall can hide an excellent entry point while the obvious gate funnels you straight into trouble. These approaches describe useful entrances, not a promise that every guard will stand still in the same place. **Varshakot: de Pleur** **Weakened after City of Pain.** Climb the plateau west of the fortress to reach a rooftop beside its outer wall. From that position, separate nearby guards with thrown rocks rather than firing into the courtyard's busiest group. There is also an underwater entrance by the southern boat dock. Follow the tunnel into the well inside the fortress; check for the dog near the exit before committing to the climb out. This is a useful alternative when the roof route leaves too many eyes on your intended landing spot. Leave an elephant assault until the fortress has weakened. The intact minefield is a serious problem for that approach, however appealing a charging elephant sounds. **Baghadur: Noore** **Weakened after Shoot the Messenger.** The tunnel to the left of the fortress provides a route into its inner temple, bypassing the exposed frontal approach. Pause before moving out into the prayer area: entering behind the walls helps only if you notice the guards already inside them. Work from the enclosed rooms toward the courtyard. Take out or disable the alarms before starting a loud clear, and look upward for the snipers before crossing open ground. Baghadur's cramped temple layout gives you cover and choke points, but it also makes a rushed retreat awkward. Keep the route back to your tunnel entrance in mind. **Ratu Gadhi: Yuma** **Weakened after Payback.** Approach from the north, deal quietly with the wall patrol and look for the grapple climb along the rock face to the left. Use the climb to establish a view into the fort before dropping among the buildings. There are three alarms to account for. From the northern wall, inspect the first alarm's area, then use the rocks on the left to work toward the southeastern alarm. Another sits behind a building. Buildings obstruct the view between them, so a single perch will not reveal the whole job. Watch the dog and the heavy defenders as well as the obvious sniper position. When an enemy investigates, let that movement create separation; repeated shots from one exposed spot can turn a careful opening into a frantic retreat. **Rajgad Gulag: Pagan Min** **Weakened after the main story.** The path left of the fortress leads toward a cave beneath it. Before the fort weakens, watch for mines on that approach. Inside, two grapple anchors take you up a shaft toward an exit near the front gate. Scout before leaving the shaft. Emerging inside the walls can put you close to patrols, and the upper buildings give the snipers long views across the compound. Clear those sightlines and locate the alarms before moving between the fortress's sections. The wall also offers a grapple approach. Pick the entrance that gives your current loadout a manageable first fight, and retain an answer for armored enemies even if you intend to remain undetected. **Finding the four optional thangkas** **The Protector's Arrival** introduces Shangri-La through the campaign. Afterward, four optional thangkas continue Kalinag's story. The missions follow their own sequence; the painting you pick up does not assign a unique chapter to that physical cave. These are approach checkpoints, so expect a climb or a swim between the coordinates and the actual pickup: - **Kalinag's Door, roughly X:246, Y:508:** start west of the Crazy Cock Bar, around X:220, Y:523. Grapple up, follow the eastern ledges and keep transferring between anchors toward the temple. - **Kalinag's Descent, roughly X:546, Y:486:** begin at the ruins around X:553, Y:454. Follow the climb north to the waterfall gorge. Descend into the pool and swim through the underwater passage toward the chamber. - **Kalinag's Vantage, around X:678, Y:560:** approach from the north and climb the western cliff, then follow the higher trail toward the cave. - **Anadekhi Ruins, around X:752, Y:810:** approach from the east. The long grapples and narrow rock opening lead to further anchor transfers, followed by a descent into the underground temple. Inside Shangri-La, use the tiger actively. Send it against a Scorcher to hold the enemy's attention while you move behind for a takedown. The magical bow's slow-time capacity runs down during sustained aiming. Release your aim between opportunities instead of draining it while searching for a target. That combination gives these missions their rhythm: direct the tiger, move, take a deliberate shot, then reassess. Ajay's expensive gun collection stays outside. Kalinag has a smaller toolkit, and getting comfortable with both halves of it makes the trip far less punishing.
