**Far Cry 3 skills: all 54 upgrades and a sensible way through the trees** Spoiler scope: skill-unlock mission names, without their story outcomes. Applies to Jason's single-player campaign. The first useful question in the skill menu is what keeps going wrong. If a mistake wipes out most of your health, work on the Shark tree. If you keep getting caught while moving through a compound, look at Spider. If a long shot or a vertical approach is central to your plan, Heron has tools worth buying. You can eventually learn all 54 skills. Early choices mostly affect how comfortable the next part of the game feels, so there is no need to turn every point into a permanent-build crisis. **Why a skill can still be locked** Earning the point is only one part of the process. You also need any preceding skill shown by the connecting line in the menu, enough story progress and, for certain upgrades, a particular action requirement. More of the trees open after meeting Citra, with the final group becoming available after New Rite of Passage. If a challenge counter is complete and the skill still refuses to unlock, check the story gate and connected prerequisites before trying to repeat the challenge. The lists below cover every skill and its main effect. Action requirements that commonly cause confusion follow afterward. **Heron: aiming, movement and attacks from above or below** - **Cook Grenades:** hold a grenade before throwing it to shorten the remaining fuse. - **Hip Shooter:** improves pistol, SMG and shotgun hipfire. - **Aimed Reload:** reload pistols and sniper rifles while keeping aim raised. - **Long Gun Expert:** improves hipfire with assault rifles, sniper rifles and LMGs. - **Syringe Potency:** increases crafted-syringe duration by 25%. - **Enhanced Syringe Potency:** raises that duration bonus to 50%. - **Steady Aim:** doubles scoped breath-holding time. - **Breath Control:** extends scoped breath-holding to four times the baseline. - **Deep Breath:** extends time underwater. - **Line Gunner:** permits one-handed weapon use on ziplines. - **Soft Landing:** reduces fall damage by 25%. - **Cool Gunner:** delays mounted-weapon overheating. - **Marathon Man:** keeps sprinting fast instead of slowing through sustained use. - **Death from Above:** performs a downward takedown. - **Death from Below:** takes down an enemy above a climbable edge. - **Dual Death from Above:** handles two suitable targets beneath you. - **Dual Death from Below:** handles two suitable targets above you. - **Gunslinger Takedown:** uses a victim's pistol against additional enemies. Aiming upgrades help most when you already have a safe firing position. They cannot fix a perch that exposes Jason from three directions. Likewise, Soft Landing gives a little more margin; it does not make any cliff a sensible shortcut. **Shark: health, recovery and heavier combat** - **Takedown:** quietly kills an enemy from behind. - **Physical Conditioning:** adds the third health segment. - **Advanced Conditioning:** adds the fourth. - **Expert Conditioning:** adds the fifth. - **Peak Conditioning:** adds the sixth. - **Improved First Aid:** restores two health segments without a syringe. - **Advanced First Aid:** restores three through first aid. - **Field Medic:** medical syringes restore four segments. - **Field Surgeon:** medical syringes restore six segments. - **Adrenaline:** partially depleted health segments regenerate faster. - **Adrenaline Surge:** improves that regeneration further. - **Ironsides:** halves explosion damage. - **Fire Retardant:** halves fire damage. - **Evasive Driving:** reduces damage suffered by commandeered vehicles. - **Button Up:** makes body armor withstand more damage. - **Chained Takedown:** links takedowns across nearby enemies. - **Grenade Takedown:** uses an enemy's grenade before pushing him away. - **Heavy Beatdown:** makes heavy gunners and flamethrower enemies vulnerable to takedowns. Health capacity and healing work together. An extra segment gives you more room to survive a bad opening, while better first aid makes it easier to recover without emptying the syringe supply. Buy both when repeated deaths are interrupting progress. **Spider: stealth, handling and resource efficiency** - **Sprint Slide:** slide by crouching during a sprint. - **Takedown Drag:** move a victim out of sight after a takedown. - **Running Reload:** reload supported weapons while sprinting. - **Nimble Fingers:** faster reloads for pistols, SMGs and shotguns. - **Nimble Hands:** faster reloads for assault rifles, sniper rifles and LMGs. - **Quick Swap:** faster weapon changes and aiming transitions. - **Expert Archery:** steadier bow aiming. - **Combat Archery:** faster arrow drawing and firing. - **Expert Swimmer:** faster swimming. - **Jungle Run:** faster crouched movement. - **Ninja Step:** reduces movement noise. - **Knife Throw Takedown:** follows a takedown with a thrown knife at another target. - **Loot Takedown:** automatically loots takedown victims. - **Horticulture 101:** doubles plant yield. - **Zoology 101:** doubles normal skinning yield. - **Stone Wall:** reduces animal-attack damage and knockdown risk. - **Penny Pincher:** increases money found on bodies. - **Dealmaker:** improves sale prices for loot. Jungle Run is especially useful when the opening is brief. You can see a guard turn away, but moving slowly across the exposed stretch may waste the opportunity. Faster crouched movement helps translate a good observation into a clean approach. **The action requirements worth planning ahead** These requirements sit alongside the menu's connected-skill prerequisites and story gates: - Standard takedowns: one for Death from Above, two for Death from Below, three for Takedown Drag and four for Chained Takedown. - Perform one Death from Above for its dual upgrade, and one Death from Below for the corresponding dual upgrade. - Get ten handgun kills for Gunslinger Takedown and ten mounted-gun kills for Cool Gunner. - Collect five relics for Marathon Man. - Get five grenade kills for Grenade Takedown. - Kill a bull shark for Heavy Beatdown. - Craft ten syringes for Peak Conditioning. - Buy body armor three times for Button Up. - Finish three Supply Drop activities for Adrenaline Surge. - Loot ten bodies for Penny Pincher. - Complete three Wanted Dead quests for Dealmaker. - Liberate two outposts without being detected for Ninja Step. - Buy three weapon attachments for Nimble Hands. - Get three melee kills for Knife Throw Takedown. - Spend $500 at shops for Loot Takedown. The undetected outposts are worth doing early while there are simpler compounds available. Scout carefully, separate isolated guards and avoid rushing the last enemy. Disabling an alarm prevents a call for reinforcements; it does not erase a guard having seen you. **A practical upgrade order** Start by improving survival and the basic tools you actually use. Extra health, better first aid and useful takedowns have broad value. Horticulture 101 pays off if you regularly collect plants, and it supports a habit that remains useful throughout the campaign. When the next group opens, add mobility and handling. Jungle Run helps stealth approaches, while the reload skill for your preferred weapon class makes recovery after a mistake less awkward. Pick archery upgrades if the bow is regularly in the loadout rather than because a complete row looks tidy. Later, Heavy Beatdown removes an important limitation from close-range stealth. The advanced health and recovery upgrades help with demanding story encounters. By then, work through unfinished challenge counters during normal travel instead of repeatedly farming an activity you dislike. One final detail: Running Reload has weapon exceptions, including LMGs, flamethrowers and grenade launchers. If it appears to fail with one of those, changing the way you press sprint will not solve the problem. Read the weapon and skill together.
