**Far Cry 2: a beautiful place where almost every job makes things worse** Spoilers: the premise and core systems. No ending details. Far Cry 2 asks you to pay attention to the journey. Getting a job is easy enough. Reaching it with useful weapons, enough supplies and a workable escape route is where the trouble starts. Ubisoft Montreal's 2008 game puts a mercenary in an unnamed African country torn apart by conflict. The assignment is to find the Jackal, an arms dealer. Malaria, competing factions and the ordinary business of staying alive complicate that assignment almost immediately. It originally released for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A route can be short on the map and still be a bad idea if it leaves you arriving through the most exposed entrance. Before leaving, look at three things: your destination, a way to approach it, and somewhere to recover afterward. That last part is easy to overlook. If the mission ends with you wounded and low on ammunition, you still need to get yourself somewhere useful. Far Cry 2 gives you a physical map and navigation tools, vehicles, safe houses and bus travel. Learning how those pieces fit together makes repeated journeys less wasteful. The landscape becomes easier to read when you start recognizing routes instead of treating every trip as a straight line. [Far Cry 2 gameplay overview](https://t.co/X01Yai9S6j). That is a good way to settle into the game. Choose a manageable task, prepare for it, and notice what the route teaches you. You do not need to do every side activity before touching the story, but a little preparation can prevent a lot of avoidable scrambling. **Equipment is something to maintain** Weapons can deteriorate and jam. Fire can spread through the environment. Those systems mean an encounter can change after you have already committed to it. [Gameplay overview](https://t.co/X01Yai9S6j), [GOG's Fortune's Edition description](https://t.co/6CCpvfsNMr). The sensible response is to leave yourself options. A long-range weapon may make the first part of an attack easier, but it does not remove the need for a useful answer at close range. An explosive opening may create confusion for the enemy while also making the ground ahead dangerous for you. Think about combinations rather than a single perfect gun. Cover distance, immediate defense and the particular problem the job is likely to involve. Then make sure the equipment is in a condition you would actually trust for that job. **Buddies complicate the work** Other mercenaries can become buddies. They have a role in missions and in keeping you alive, which makes them more than names attached to a conversation. At the same time, everyone is operating inside the same ugly conflict. [Far Cry 2 overview](https://t.co/X01Yai9S6j). That gives the character discussion some substance. Cooperation can be genuine in the moment while still being tangled up with self-interest. A person helping you through one dangerous situation has not automatically become a reliable moral guide for everything that follows. The game leaves plenty to discuss about the difference between doing a job efficiently and doing anything that improves the country. That is worth keeping in mind without spoiling where the story eventually takes it. **What Fortune's Edition means** Fortune's Edition includes the Fortunes Pack, which added three weapons, two vehicles and multiplayer maps. It is not a separate story campaign. The GOG listing identifies those additions directly. [GOG](https://t.co/6CCpvfsNMr). For current online expectations, Ubisoft and Steam state that multiplayer and online features are no longer available for their listed product. A historical multiplayer feature in an old review or a storefront tag should not override that explicit notice. [Ubisoft](https://t.co/q3JIEPF6Zm), [Steam](https://t.co/HcxR1IGush). Far Cry 2 is a good game to discuss slowly. Its travel, equipment and relationships all feed into the next fight. Learn those connections and the campaign becomes much easier to understand, even when the situation itself keeps getting worse.
