**Far Cry in Order: The Games, the Branches and the Editions That Matter**
The numbered Far Cry games are easy enough to line up. The confusion starts with Instincts, Predator, Classic Edition, standalone releases and season passes that include another Far Cry game. Two similar-looking store listings can represent different campaigns, different versions of one campaign or a bundle you partly own already.
Here is a useful way to sort the series without turning it into a ranking.
**The main release order**
These are the original release years, not the dates of later ports or remasters:
- **2004:** Far Cry.
- **2008:** Far Cry 2.
- **2012:** Far Cry 3.
- **2013:** Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, a standalone release.
- **2014:** Far Cry 4.
- **2016:** Far Cry Primal.
- **2018:** Far Cry 5.
- **2019:** Far Cry New Dawn.
- **2021:** Far Cry 6.
Release order is useful if you want to see how the games change. It lets the older systems establish themselves before you arrive at later conveniences and variations. You can notice what a sequel keeps, replaces or expands instead of approaching every game with the expectations of the newest one. [Series release chronology](https://t.co/Sq27JCshVE).
That is an approach to exploring the series, not a requirement to finish eight games before touching Yara. Most of these adventures introduce a new protagonist and central conflict. The important exceptions are particular connected stories and versions, rather than one long campaign split across numbered boxes.
**Jack Carver has two different branches**
The original **Far Cry** and the **Instincts** line should be kept separate when following a walkthrough. The latter reworks Jack Carver's adventure rather than reproducing the PC campaign room for room.
The early console sequence is:
- **Far Cry Instincts, 2005:** the original Xbox adventure.
- **Far Cry Instincts: Evolution, 2006:** its follow-up campaign.
- **Far Cry Instincts: Predator, 2006:** the Xbox 360 package containing both campaigns.
- **Far Cry Vengeance, 2006:** the Wii branch, with its own adaptation and controls.
Predator therefore does not add a third full Jack Carver story after Evolution. Its value is the combined package. Xbox's current listing identifies support on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, but check the actual listing for your account and region before buying. **Far Cry Classic** is another distinct label: it brings the original 2004 game to consoles with an HD overhaul and redesigned controls. It belongs with the first game's coverage, not between Evolution and Far Cry 2 as a new story. [Ubisoft's Classic launch explanation](https://t.co/y6GZ78C8t7).
**The story order worth protecting**
If spoilers matter, keep these pairings together:
- **Instincts before Evolution.** Predator lets you follow that sequence within one package.
- **Far Cry 5 before New Dawn.** New Dawn revisits Hope County after the earlier game's events. Starting there gives away a major outcome before you have reached it yourself.
- **Blood Dragon before Trials of the Blood Dragon**, if you want to meet the original characters before the crossover builds on that world.
- **The relevant main campaigns before Far Cry 6's villain episodes.** Those expansions are better saved for after you know the people and events their memories revisit.
New Dawn is a separate game, not a Far Cry 5 DLC episode. Primal is also its own release. Neither title becomes optional in a discussion of the series simply because it lacks a number. **Read “Classic Edition” carefully**
**Far Cry 3 Classic Edition** focuses on the single-player campaign. Do not use the original game's multiplayer or co-op descriptions as a promise of what this edition contains. Its campaign guides still concern Jason's adventure, but the edition name matters when discussing features. [Official Classic Edition overview](https://t.co/lYYyBdnSHc).
A performance update can also change how an existing release runs without making it a new campaign. Far Cry 4 received its current-generation 60fps patch in April 2025. Far Cry 3, Blood Dragon and Primal received free 60fps updates for PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S in January 2026. As of November 1, 2026, the announced Switch 2 versions of Far Cry 3 Classic Edition and Blood Dragon Classic Edition are **future releases, scheduled for spring 2027**. [Official announcement](https://t.co/tivxXbW4py).
**The smaller branches**
**Paradise Lost** is the arcade-cabinet release. **Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity** is a venue-based experience. **Trials of the Blood Dragon** takes the crossover into stunt riding and other short action stages. They belong in the history, but buying one should not be confused with getting another open-world Far Cry campaign. [Trials' original PlayStation introduction](https://t.co/4aOn3XA35u).
For a return trip through the series, choose what you want to follow: release history, a connected story or one game's systems. Then check the exact edition and its contents. That gets you into the right adventure without buying the same campaign twice or opening a sequel before its biggest surprise has landed.
