**Far Cry: From the First Island to Yara** Spoiler note: this overview includes New Dawn's premise, which reveals a major outcome of Far Cry 5. Far Cry is one of my favorite series. I have beaten these games, and I have put a hell of a lot of time into them. There is a lot more to get into here than a ranking of the villains. The original Far Cry starts the conversation on a tropical island. Crytek's 2004 shooter put bright beaches and open views around a situation that could turn dangerous very quickly. A beautiful place becomes somewhere you need to study carefully: who can see you, where the cover ends, and how far you can get before the next fight begins. Far Cry 2 moves to an unnamed African country caught in a war. You are a mercenary dealing with rival factions while malaria adds another problem. The setting gives the adventure a harsher feeling. Getting to a destination has weight, and the next job raises questions about who benefits from keeping this conflict going. The country deserves more attention than treating it as a backdrop for the person you have been sent to find. Then Far Cry 3 puts Jason Brody on the Rook Islands. His friends want to survive and escape. Jason starts discovering how capable he can become in this violent place, while Vaas, Dennis and Citra pull him toward very different understandings of it. Getting stronger feels good to the player. Watching what that strength does to Jason gives the story something uncomfortable to work with. Far Cry 4 sends Ajay Ghale to Kyrat with his mother's ashes. It is a personal trip that becomes tangled up with Pagan Min and a rebellion. The family history matters because Ajay is walking into relationships and grievances that existed long before he arrived. People see something in his name before he has had much chance to decide what he wants it to mean. Primal takes the series back to Oros, with Takkar trying to bring the Wenja together. Bows, clubs and spears replace the firearms, and tamed predators can accompany you. That makes a familiar idea feel different. You are still studying dangerous ground and deciding how to approach it, but the distance between you and an animal suddenly deserves a lot more consideration. Blood Dragon goes in the other direction: cyber commando Rex Colt, neon and science-fiction excess. The same broad appeal can support a much sillier adventure when the presentation commits to it. There is room in Far Cry for a serious discussion about violence and a game that looks ready to burst out of an overplayed action-movie videotape. Far Cry 5 brings the conflict to Hope County, Montana, where Joseph Seed's cult has spread through the countryside. Farms, roads and fishing spots make the occupation feel close to ordinary life. These are places where people should be able to get on with their day. Instead, they have to organize resistance against people who claim the right to control them. New Dawn returns to that county seventeen years after nuclear catastrophe. The familiar setting now belongs to people rebuilding among its remains. Coming back to a changed place creates a different kind of attachment: you can think about what survived, what disappeared and what the next generation will do with what is left. Far Cry 6 takes us to Yara and Dani Rojas, with Antón Castillo trying to shape the country's future and his son's place in it. Its equipment gives the action another personality, particularly the improvised weapons and Supremo backpacks. Beneath all that firepower, Dani still has to deal with people who have their own reasons to join the fight. Across those games, the landscape keeps giving you decisions. Study a position, choose your tools, take the opening, then react when something else gets involved. The stories give those decisions a larger context, and the best character discussions have to look at the people living with the consequences. The early console games, the expansions and the smaller side releases add more branches to that history. We will give those their own room too. First, let's go back to the original island and work through the games properly.
