**Halo 4 Spartan Ops: Memento Mori and its two defense achievements**
**MCC guide. Episode 5 spoilers.**
There are two places in this episode where simply reaching the ending isn't enough for the achievement. Spartan Miller requires you to finish the defense properly. The Cauldron Base requires you to keep both generators alive. Decide before starting whether you're clearing the story or doing those challenges, because the difference matters halfway through the fight.
**1. Spartan Miller**
Advance to the upper part of the structure at the Gate and clear the first Prometheans. Follow the marked controls to activate the research equipment, then defend it while the scientists collect their readings.
Watchers are an immediate problem here: dealing with them early means fewer things supporting the Knights while you're trying to protect stationary equipment. Keep checking the stations rather than chasing a single enemy around the far side of the map.
Eventually a new control lets you stop the incoming Prometheans. Use it and follow the portal objective to finish the ordinary mission route.
**No Easy Way Out**
For **No Easy Way Out**, play on **Heroic or Legendary** and keep at least one research station operating through the defense. **Don't activate the final shutdown switch while enemies remain.** Finish the final Knights and any subsequent attackers first, then operate the switch after the area is clear.
Despite the wording, this isn't a no-death challenge. Player deaths alone do not invalidate it. The important distinction is completing the defense instead of cutting the assault short with the switch.
My recommendation for co-op is to assign someone to watch the equipment while the others handle the heavier enemies. Everyone following the same Knight is how a group of Crawlers gets an uncontested attack on a station.
**2. Nothing Can Go Wrong**
At the Refuge, approach the science team's position. Prometheans appear almost immediately. Clear the first attack and protect the scientists as the next waves arrive. Their health indicators help you identify where an intervention matters most.
When Boyd identifies the portal device, go to its marked control on the **lower central level**. Activating the switch exposes a large sphere in an energy beam above. **Shoot the exposed device to destroy it.** Pressing the control alone doesn't stop the attack.
Clean up the remaining Prometheans once the device is gone. The chapter ends with Crimson remaining at the facility.
For a safer defense, keep a firing angle on the scientists without standing directly on top of them. That gives you room to retreat from a Knight while continuing to cover the people it is approaching. A power weapon is worth using when it prevents an enemy from reaching them; saving every shot for an imagined later emergency defeats the purpose of carrying it.
**3. Everything Has Gone Wrong**
You're still at the Refuge, now fighting Covenant instead of the Promethean waves. Push toward the Marines trapped behind a shield, clearing the nearby attack first.
Roland makes the barrier vulnerable. **Wait for that change, then shoot the shield down.** You aren't looking for a hidden switch on the far side of it.
Watch for the cloaked Elites of the Silent Blade as you move through the next fight. Give yourself a little space at corners; a sword carrier is much harder to answer once you're already within its reach. After defeating them, operate the marked panel to release Doctor Boyd from the safe room.
The next attack includes Hunters. Keep fighting through the reinforcement waves and finish the marked survivors. Shadow handles the cruiser overhead while Crimson clears the ground. Once the ship is destroyed and the area is secured, the episode sends you toward Magma Base.
**4. The Cauldron Base**
Take the available vehicle and move through the tunnel toward the base. On the solo or two-player setup recommended for the achievement, you have Mantises available. Older footage can show Warthogs in other configurations, so don't use a different vehicle lineup as a reason to assume you've loaded the wrong chapter.
At the base, defend the **two generators**. Their health bars are your most useful warning. An enemy shooting a generator matters more than a distant enemy shooting at you from somewhere you can avoid.
Activate the two defensive turrets when the game marks them. Keep fighting through the Covenant drops, including the Hunters. When the attack is over, investigate Thorne's IFF marker near the cliff and follow the final waypoint.
**What Power Outage?**
Play **The Cauldron Base on Heroic or Legendary** and finish without losing either generator. Both must survive; keeping only one is insufficient for the achievement.
The Mantis gives you the firepower to interrupt dangerous attacks quickly. Keep turning between the two objectives. If one is taking damage, stop spending rockets on an aircraft that isn't the immediate threat and clear the infantry or Hunter attacking it.
In co-op, dividing the generators between players is easier to manage than having both players drift to the same side. Call for help before your side is overrun. If you need to leave the Mantis to activate a turret, clear the immediate area first and return promptly.
Don't park so close to a generator that your own view of its attackers is blocked by the structure. A slightly wider position gives you room to see a rush forming and fire before enemies reach the objective.
**5. Spartan Thorne**
At the Quarry, investigate the first marked location, clearing the elevated snipers and the troops guarding it. Thorne isn't there. Fight the arriving reinforcements, then follow the new marker to the second search area at the far end of the quarry.
The second location also fails to produce Thorne. The chapter becomes a substantial defense against Covenant reinforcements, including Hunters and Wraiths. Keep the heavy threats in view while changing positions; retreating behind a rock only helps if you aren't backing into another firing line.
Use the captured UNSC equipment in the area and move to the landing zone when extraction is called. The rescue goes wrong in the ending sequence. **The destroyed Pelican and the trap are scripted**, not evidence that you missed a hidden protection objective.
For the episode's optional Red vs. Blue radio, turn around at the start and inspect the rocks with a precision weapon. Shoot the small box tucked into the rock formation to activate the alternate dialogue.
**Episode checklist**
- Spartan Miller completed; No Easy Way Out if attempted on Heroic or Legendary with the full defense finished.
- Nothing Can Go Wrong completed after destroying the exposed portal device.
- Everything Has Gone Wrong completed after freeing Boyd and clearing the attacks.
- The Cauldron Base completed; both generators survive for What Power Outage? on Heroic or Legendary.
- Spartan Thorne completed through its scripted ending.
All five chapters complete the **Memento Mori** episode achievement. They also make up the halfway point of the 50-chapter Spartan Ops season.
