**Halo 4: starting Spartan Ops, and keeping its completion records straight** Spartan Ops isn't just another name for Halo 4's campaign. You're playing the missions of Fireteam Crimson, with a separate set of objectives, a separate story and a much longer chapter checklist than you might expect when you first open it. There are **ten episodes with five playable chapters each**. That's fifty chapters. Watching an episode's cinematic is worthwhile for the story, but it doesn't complete those five missions for you. This guide covers **Spartan Ops in MCC**. The original Xbox 360 release has its own achievement list and service history. Don't use a 2012 launch schedule as if new episodes are still being released weekly, and don't assume an old matchmaking instruction describes the current MCC menus. **Choose solo or co-op before choosing the difficulty** For a first run, a team lets you split the jobs. One player can handle a vehicle or heavy weapon while another watches the objective. If everyone rushes the same target, the extra players aren't helping the part of the map you've left undefended. Solo is also an option. Just understand that you're doing all of those jobs yourself. Take a precision weapon for exposed infantry and snipers, then make use of the chapter's vehicles and weapon drops rather than trying to finish every encounter with the starting loadout. A death isn't automatically the end of a standard Spartan Ops chapter. The mode lets you respawn and continue. That does not make every objective safe: civilians, Marines or generators involved in a specific achievement can still be lost while you're getting back into the fight. Use respawns as recovery, not as the entire plan. If you keep appearing and dying in the same area, change the approach. Find a line of sight to the sniper, destroy the vehicle controlling the open ground, or retreat far enough to get a useful weapon before returning. **The completion achievements are separate** Keep these distinctions on the checklist: - **Operation Completion:** complete a Spartan Ops mission. - **Feet First:** complete all Spartan Ops chapters, with no higher difficulty specified. - **Term of Enlistment:** complete all chapters on Normal or higher. - **Hazard Pay:** complete all chapters on Heroic or higher. - **Icarus:** complete all chapters on Legendary. - **Smooth Operator:** complete all chapters **solo on Legendary**. There are also individual episode-completion achievements. Finishing one chapter is not finishing an episode; finishing five chapters from different episodes doesn't complete one either. A co-op Legendary run can help with Legendary completion, but it doesn't satisfy Smooth Operator's solo requirement. If solo Legendary is the long-term goal, record it separately from the chapters you play with friends. The names of the ten episodes, in order, are Departure, Artifact, Catherine, Didact's Hand, Memento Mori, Scattered, Invasion, Expendable, Key and Exodus. Use the episode and chapter name in your notes, not just the map name. Spartan Ops returns to locations with different objectives, so recognizing a battlefield doesn't mean you've already completed this particular chapter. **A useful checklist takes seconds** After each chapter, record: - Episode and chapter. - Difficulty. - Solo or co-op. - Whether the completion or relevant achievement registered. - Any special task you deliberately left for another visit. That is enough. You don't need an elaborate spreadsheet, but you do need more than “I remember fighting in this canyon.” Let the chapter finish and its result register before leaving. If you're doing a special achievement, read its exact difficulty and objective before starting. The general completion rules do not erase a chapter-specific restriction. **Don't confuse a badge problem with confirmed lost progress** Halo Support's known-issues page for the **July 12, 2023 build** documents a problem where Spartan Ops completion badges may not display correctly on mission select. It states that completion and achievement progress can still be awarded. That dated notice is a reason to check more than one indicator, not proof that every missing achievement today is harmless. Compare your own chapter record with the achievement progress. If something is missing, narrow down the affected episode or chapter before replaying all fifty. Don't delete cloud saves because a community comment says it fixed their version. That is a much bigger step than replaying one uncertain chapter, and it isn't a universal fix. **What to leave for later** Do the story chapters in order first if you want the narrative to make sense. Use the individual chapter guides for routes and specific challenges. Save difficult protection objectives for a visit where protecting the target is your main job, not something you're trying to fit around a casual co-op run. Likewise, don't assume a new skull or modifier is safe for every achievement simply because it makes the fight easier. Check the setting and the achievement you're targeting. The routes here work as conventional chapter guides rather than relying on a modifier-based completion shortcut. Spartan Ops is a sizeable part of Halo 4. Treating its fifty chapters as their own project makes it much easier to enjoy the missions and much easier to identify the one thing you still need afterward.
