**Halo 4: Midnight — getting through the final mission**
**MCC campaign guide. Full mission and ending spoilers.**
Midnight starts by putting you in a fighter and ends by taking almost everything away from Chief. Between those two moments, there is a lot of Promethean fighting. Don't arrive at each new platform with two empty guns because you were saving a weapon for a fight that already happened.
This is a conventional completion route. The collectible and hammer challenge are covered separately; neither needs to complicate a first Legendary clear.
**Through the ship in the Broadsword**
Watch the opening ahead of the fighter rather than staring at the reticle. The moving machinery is the immediate problem: a clean line through a gap matters more than shooting every turret beside it. Make small corrections before a narrow opening instead of trying to straighten up inside it.
Shoot the red center of an energy barrier to clear the way. Destroy turrets that threaten the line you actually need to fly, but don't steer into a wall while chasing one off to the side. Ease off the boost when the route becomes difficult to read, then use it through a clear stretch.
When the flight opens into the large circular area, attack the central linked orb first. The next targets are the four anti-ship cannon power sources around the outside. Their vulnerable orbs are inside the structures beneath the guns, accessible through side openings. Line up a pass, fire into the exposed orb, and continue around the outer area rather than turning directly into the central structure.
Work around the ring until all four are down. Follow the opening created by Infinity; the transition leaves you continuing on foot with the bomb.
**The first interior rooms**
The first rooms introduce the pattern for most of the remaining mission: remove Watchers, deal with their support, then finish the Knights without letting them box you into a doorway.
Use the doorway as a place to recover, not as a place to stand still indefinitely. Step back when your shields break. If a Knight closes on that position, retreat far enough to make another firing lane instead of repeatedly peeking into its weapon.
Keep a precision weapon for Crawlers and Watchers. Save the harder-hitting ammunition for Knights that would otherwise drain the rifle. A missed explosive shot is particularly expensive here, so wait for a clear angle instead of firing as a Knight disappears behind scenery.
**Terminal stop:** in the third enemy-filled room after the flight, check behind the central structure for the final terminal. Do this before continuing down the shaft toward the portal sequence.
**Cortana's portals and the weapon room**
Follow the passage out to the platform and insert Cortana at the marked pedestal. Enter the portal she opens. Clear the Crawlers on the next platform, then take the next portal and fight through the larger Knight encounter.
Eventually the route takes you into a weapon room with weapons suspended above glowing recesses. Stop and choose a loadout deliberately. This is where the normal Gravity Hammer pickup is available for **Chief, Smash!** If the goal is simply surviving Legendary, you don't have to take it. A precision weapon plus a weapon capable of dealing heavy damage to Knights is a sensible pairing.
The next portal returns you to a platform you have already crossed, but from the other direction with more enemies. Don't assume a familiar-looking platform is clear. Work through it again and use the marked portal at the far end.
At the next objective, insert Cortana and defend the platform while she works. Crawlers arrive along the approaches; keep checking both rather than becoming absorbed in a single target. An Autosentry can help cover an approach, but continue watching the side it isn't facing.
When Cortana is ready, retrieve her and follow the exit route through the portal and onward to the gravity lift. Staying behind to search an empty defense platform won't advance the objective.
**The two shield-control routes**
The next section uses launch pads to move between platforms. Step onto the intended pad and let it carry you across. Trying to improvise an ordinary jump over the gap is not a shortcut worth taking on a completion run.
Pass through the weapon area and reach the main pedestal. Insert Cortana. Two routes open from this central section, and you need to complete both shield-control objectives.
For a straightforward left-first route:
- Take the left launch pad to the Knight-heavy side.
- Fight along the lower walkway, then follow the ramps upward toward the objective.
- Activate the light bridge when you reach its control.
- Cross, clear the enemies between you and the pedestal, and insert Cortana.
- Use the outgoing launch-pad route to continue toward the other side.
The second side follows the same broad arrangement of ramps, bridge control and pedestal, with Crawlers and Watchers making up more of the pressure. Kill the small enemies rather than running past them into the next Knight. A Crawler behind you becomes a much bigger problem when you're trying to recover from a heavy shot in front.
You can tackle the right side first instead. The important thing is completing both marked controls, not following an assumed mandatory left/right order.
On Heroic or Legendary, pause at each safe transition to reload and check the next enemy position. In particular, don't rush a Binary Rifle sightline just because the objective marker is visible beyond it. Deal with the shooter from cover before crossing.
**The last platform and the Didact**
After the second shield-control sequence, take the outgoing launch pad to the final combat platform. Clear the Knights guarding the central lift. Keep enough separation to fight one angle at a time; circling blindly around the middle can expose you to the whole group.
Once the way is open, step into the glowing gravity lift and follow the light bridge. From here, the ending uses on-screen action prompts rather than a conventional boss health bar. Follow the prompts to reach the Didact, use the grenade and then reach and detonate the device.
Use the controls displayed by your version and your bindings. Don't miss an input because an old Xbox 360 walkthrough lists a button that isn't the one you currently use.
Let the ending and mission completion register. Then check the campaign record before starting cleanup runs. Midnight's MCC par time is **25 minutes**; that is a separate speed target, not a requirement to finish the story.
