**Halo 4: Dawn — getting off the ship, one problem at a time**
**MCC campaign guide. Mission spoilers. Normal, Heroic and Legendary advice; conventional route, not a speedrun.**
Dawn starts quietly enough, but there are two different jobs here. First you're dealing with boarders. Then you're trying to get out of a ship that is coming apart. The second part isn't a signal to stop and finish every enemy you see.
If you want Chief's service-record achievement, take the short detour at the beginning. There isn't a Forerunner terminal in this mission.
**Before the elevator**
Follow the prompts to leave cryo and retrieve Cortana. Before moving through the next rooms, look left for the stairs leading down below the cryo-bay walkway. Use the records console on that lower floor for **Digging up the Past**, then return to the main route.
Proceed through the ship until the elevator doors need to be forced open. The climb is a prompted sequence: keep moving upward and respond to the indicated sideways movement when debris comes down. At the top, use the melee prompt against the Elite. Don't stand there trying to turn that encounter into a normal gunfight.
**Observation deck: prepare before pressing the button**
The Elite ahead is occupied at a console. Approach from behind and take him out, then deal with the Grunts below and around the deck. Before interacting with the console, reload and collect nearby ammunition and grenades.
Activating the console brings the boarding attack. The enemies arrive through boarding craft at the windows, so watch those entry points instead of staring at the console after you've used it.
On Normal, the assault rifle is comfortable for the close Grunts. On Heroic and Legendary, keep a precision weapon and consider taking a plasma pistol from a fallen enemy. Use a charged shot to strip an Elite's shield, then finish the exposed head with the Magnum. That saves ammunition compared with trying to win every shield fight using pistol bullets alone.
Don't let a surviving Grunt behind you turn a clean fight into a grenade death. Clear the immediate floor before you move across it to finish an Elite.
**Through the interior rooms**
Once the deck is secure, follow Cortana's marker to the elevator and the passages beyond. The small rooms encourage rushing, but on the higher difficulties it's better to fight from one doorway, clear the enemies in view, and only then expose the next angle.
Use the ammunition supplies along the route. A nearly empty plasma pistol is not a useful second weapon just because the shield-break combination worked in the previous room; replace it when another is available.
The larger circular room has enemies around its sides as well as in the central area. Remove the weaker enemies first where you have a safe angle. Watch for Jackals with Needlers: letting the needles accumulate while you're lining up a different target is a quick way to lose the exchange.
As the Elites push from the far side, keep room to retreat. The concussion-rifle fire is a reason to change position, not to remain against the same piece of cover and hope the next blast misses. Draw an Elite into a lane you can control rather than running into the far doorway while several targets are still active.
As you exit the airlock, look for the battle rifle floating just outside. Take it before advancing across the exposed hull. It gives you a much better way to work on the longer sightlines ahead.
**Outside: the missile controls**
Wait for the airlock sequence, then survey the deck before dropping into the open. The exterior has scattered Covenant positions, elevated threats and gaps in the ship. Low gravity makes the movement feel different; it doesn't make exposed jumps a good defensive plan.
Use the battle rifle to remove visible infantry from cover, paying particular attention to the ranged Jackals. Move between intact sections of the deck toward the missile-control waypoint. If a shielded Elite is holding the approach, weaken him with plasma or a well-placed grenade before committing to the crossing.
The cruiser gives the scene urgency, but don't interpret its approach as a reason to sprint blindly through every defender. You still need to survive long enough to operate the launch control.
At the control station, eliminate the nearby defenders and activate the console. The launch fails because the missile mechanism is obstructed. **That is the next objective, not a bug or a second hidden button at the same console.**
**Free the missile**
Follow the new waypoint to the obstructed mechanism. Reinforcements arrive during this part, so choose between clearing the enemies directly in your path and moving through an opening you can safely use. A first Legendary clear doesn't need the aggressive sprint past every arrival used in some speed routes.
Reach the marked mechanism and interact to free it. The missile-launch sequence follows. Once control returns, turn your attention back to the ship, not the distant cruiser.
**Escape the collapsing Dawn**
Return through the indicated airlock and let it cycle. Inside, follow the escape route and Cortana's markers through the damaged corridors. Debris and collapsing floor sections change the path; when the floor breaks, continue along the newly opened route instead of trying to return to the old walkway.
At this stage, stop treating every Covenant silhouette as an objective. Clear an enemy if it is physically blocking the route or about to kill you, but don't stay behind to collect every weapon or finish a room that is being destroyed around you.
Watch the floor as well as the waypoint. Sprint is useful on clear stretches, but arriving quickly at an explosion or a gap doesn't help. Follow the marked route toward the escape pods to trigger the closing sequence and finish Dawn.
For a clean first run, the useful habits are simple: prepare before the boarding trigger, use the interior cover rather than chasing Elites, take a precision weapon outside, and remember that the escape is about reaching the door. You can come back for a faster route after you know where the ship is going to fall apart.
