**Halo 4 — start with the right version and the right checklist**
There is a lot more to Halo 4 than getting Chief through eight missions. There are terminals, individual combat challenges, score runs, playlists and another whole set of missions in Spartan Ops. The mistake is treating all of those as one checklist from whichever old guide happens to appear first.
These guides use **Halo 4 in The Master Chief Collection**. The original Xbox 360 release has a different achievement list. Playing that release through backward compatibility still gives you the original game, not MCC.
**Campaign first, Spartan Ops separately**
The main campaign's playable missions are Dawn, Requiem, Forerunner, Infinity, Reclaimer, Shutdown, Composer and Midnight. The opening Prologue isn't another combat mission to clear for a score.
Spartan Ops is a separate mode with its own objectives and customizable loadouts. It can be played alone or with a team of up to four. Don't finish Midnight and assume you've also finished the requirements attached to Crimson's missions.
For the campaign, MCC supports up to four players online. Xbox supports two-player split-screen; PC doesn't include native split-screen. That distinction matters when you're organizing a group. Four-player online doesn't mean four people can sit at one screen.
**What happened to the original release?**
The Xbox 360 Halo service shutdown happened on January 13, 2022. Matchmaking-dependent achievements and online challenges were affected. The official support guidance still lists Halo 4's campaign, Spartan Ops, custom games, Forge, split-screen, LAN and online squads among the features intended to remain available.
That is not a promise that every legacy service is trouble-free today, and it certainly isn't a reason to tell someone that the entire old game has stopped working. It means you have to check the particular requirement. An offline campaign achievement and a retired online challenge aren't the same problem.
MCC uses different services and wasn't part of that shutdown. On PC, Halo 4 arrived in MCC in November 2020, with campaign, multiplayer and Spartan Ops rather than a separate standalone campaign port.
**Don't mistake a records console for a campaign terminal**
Dawn has a console containing Chief's service record. Accessing it earns **Digging up the Past**. It isn't the first of the seven Forerunner terminals.
Those seven begin in Requiem and continue through the remaining campaign missions. There is no reason to search every inch of Dawn for a terminal that belongs to the next level.
Likewise, Halo 4's campaign skull modifiers aren't a set of physical skulls you need to hunt through these rooms. Keep the menu modifiers and the terminal collectibles as separate categories.
**A sensible order for the achievement work**
I'd start with a campaign clear and the terminals. Get comfortable with the Prometheans before adding several restrictions to every encounter. A Knight that teleports away and receives help from a Watcher can waste a surprising amount of ammunition if you keep attacking the wrong target.
Then revisit individual challenges. Read the complete requirement before you load the mission: difficulty, weapon, vehicle, surviving allies and whether the condition lasts for an entire level all matter.
After that, separate your score route from your time route. A fast clear that leaves most enemies behind can be excellent for the clock and poor for points. A careful score attempt can fail the time target without being a bad run.
Save the campaign's hardest goals for deliberate attempts. **Naked Tyrant** calls for the Halo 4 LASO Campaign playlist, not simply a mission with a handful of skulls switched on. Keep its progress separate from ordinary mission selection.
You don't need a complicated spreadsheet. A line for each mission with difficulty, solo/co-op, terminal, score, time and remaining special challenge is enough. The important thing is knowing what a run was intended to accomplish before you begin it.
**A progress display can be wrong without the achievement being lost**
Halo Support’s known-issues page for the July 12, 2023 build lists a specific Spartan Ops issue: mission-select completion badges may fail to update even though achievements and progression are still awarded. If a badge looks blank, check the achievement and recorded progress before replaying every chapter on the assumption that nothing counted.
That same dated page also documents a Resume Campaign issue when moving between Xbox One and Series consoles: the mission can restart from its beginning. Finish a mission before changing devices when you can. That's less frustrating than discovering that the last checkpoint wasn't portable in the way you expected.
