**Halo: Reach — which version you're playing matters before you start chasing achievements**
Reach is one of those games where an old guide can look completely right until you get to the achievement you actually wanted. Same planet, same Noble Team, same mission. Different checklist.
The guides in this collection use **Halo: Reach inside The Master Chief Collection**. If you're playing the original Xbox 360 release, including through backward compatibility, keep that distinction in mind. Launching the old game on a newer console doesn't turn it into MCC.
**Get the campaign installed before assembling the team**
MCC separates its games and modes in its installation options. Check that Reach's campaign content is installed, rather than assuming that being able to enter the collection's menu means every campaign is ready.
For campaign co-op, Reach supports up to four players online. On Xbox, two people can share a screen; native PC split-screen isn't included. Four-player online campaign does not mean four-player couch campaign.
Also, don't use a general statement that “MCC has crossplay” to promise a mixed Xbox-and-PC Reach campaign. The official campaign-crossplay addition specifically names Halo 3 and ODST. Reach's campaign isn't included in that announcement. Sort out your platform arrangement before scheduling a long co-op run.
**The old game isn't simply gone**
The January 2022 Xbox 360 service shutdown affected Reach's original online services, including matchmaking-dependent features. It did not delete the campaign or make all local and private play disappear. Halo Support lists campaign, Firefight, custom games, Forge, split-screen, LAN and online squads among the functions that remain, while achievement availability varies with what an achievement requires.
That shutdown also applies when the original version is running through backward compatibility. MCC is a separate release, not a workaround that restores the old game's achievement list.
If a guide tells you to queue for an original360 matchmade mode, check that requirement before spending an evening trying to reproduce it in MCC.
**Start with the story, not five competing restrictions**
Here is the order I would use:
1. **A campaign clear.** Learn the encounters and keep an eye on the ordinary data pads.
2. **Collectibles and individual challenges.** Use deliberate revisits for the Legendary-only pads, unusual vehicles and hidden scenes.
3. **Par times and par scores.** Treat these as different routes. Killing everything helps one goal and often hurts the other.
4. **Legendary completion and its solo requirement.** Keep clear records of what you actually completed alone.
5. **LASO and the Legendary time target.** Give these their own preparation rather than assuming a collectible run also counts as a clean challenge run.
That isn't a required number of playthroughs. If you already know Reach well, combine compatible goals. The point is to stop ruining a good run by discovering halfway through that you're trying to satisfy contradictory instructions.
**Data pads aren't collectible skulls**
Reach has nineteen data pads. Nine are available on any difficulty; the other ten require Legendary, including the one in Lone Wolf.
In MCC's achievement numbering, the ordinary pads are 1–9, and the Legendary set is 10–19. Some older location guides number each mission's two pads together instead. A guide's “pad 2” may therefore be MCC's pad 10. Match the mission and difficulty, not just the number in the heading.
The opening of Winter Contingency is the first place this matters. One pad is carried by a fleeing cloaked Elite on Legendary. You can't finish the opening conversation, wander around the farms, then expect him to be waiting for you.
**Know what the big achievements actually ask**
**A Monument To All Your Sins** is the solo Legendary campaign goal. A successful co-op Legendary clear isn't the same requirement.
**Why Do This To Yourself?** requires completing the named Reach LASO Campaign playlist. Switching on a collection of skulls in an ordinary mission is not a substitute for completing that playlist.
**Keep Your Foot on the Pedrogas** is the Legendary campaign time goal, under three hours. The separate mission par-time achievements aren't a guarantee that this larger target has been met.
Lone Wolf also has its own scoring achievements. Don't treat surviving the ending as an ordinary mission completion that automatically checks off every Lone Wolf target.
Keep a simple checklist with the mission, difficulty, solo/co-op status, data pads and the exact achievement still missing. That's more useful than a page full of checked boxes from the wrong edition.
