**ODST: the Mombasa Streets achievements that are easy to misunderstand**
**Halo: The Master Chief Collection.** This covers the Rookie's nighttime hub, not the daytime flashbacks. There are story spoilers for how the investigation leads into Data Hive.
The city is more than the space between missions. It has its own investigation awards, an easily missed cereal-box joke, sleeping Grunts, and the recordings that eventually change an encounter underground. It also causes a particularly annoying bit of achievement confusion: an old Xbox 360 guide can give you a perfectly real objective that simply isn't on MCC's list.
**Get the investigation moving**
Follow the evidence beacons and inspect the objects rather than just reaching the marked street. Those interactions unlock the flashbacks and their associated investigation achievements. Finishing the flashback is a separate task from discovering its evidence.
The six clue awards in MCC are Junior Detective, Investigator, Gumshoe, Bloodhound, Private Eye, and Secret Agent. Use the campaign's objectives to track the investigation; do not assume that walking past a clue gives credit. The hub walkthrough explains the helmet, optics, turret, detonator, sniper rifle, and biofoam clues.
There is no Mombasa Streets par-time or par-score achievement. Spending an extra ten minutes checking a side street will not spoil a nonexistent hub par target. It can still interfere with a different run objective, so know whether you came here to explore or to finish the campaign.
**Saturday Morning Cartoon**
After the Superintendent gives you access to the VISR database, the route toward Dare's helmet takes you through a building, across a courtyard, and into the building overlooking the plaza.
In the **first** building, stop before going out into that courtyard. Look at the floor to the right of the courtyard doorway, in front of the couch. There is a Web-O's cereal box. Center your view on it and give the trigger a moment.
You aren't looking for a recording terminal or a weapon pickup. The achievement is for spotting the box. If you've already gone upstairs toward the helmet, you've moved beyond this little detour.
**Catch 'Em Napping**
Kill five Grunts while they are asleep on Mombasa Streets. A Grunt that was sleeping when you entered the area but wakes before you kill it is not the same thing.
Approach quietly and inspect the group before starting a fight. A nearby Brute can turn a sleepy corner into an alerted squad very quickly. A careful melee can avoid the noise of a firefight, but melee is not an achievement requirement: the important condition is that the Grunt is still sleeping when killed.
Don't throw a grenade into a mixed group and assume every resulting kill counted. Work deliberately, watch the achievement progress if available, and move to another undisturbed group when the survivors wake. This is a good reason to avoid firing at every patrol as soon as you see it.
**Engineers: MCC and the original game ask different things**
MCC has **Naughty Naughty** for ten Engineer kills and **Well...Maybe One or Two** for twenty-five. The second title is a joke, not a restriction telling you to spare all but two.
Engineers can shield Covenant troops. If you're pursuing these kill totals, identify the floating Engineer before spending ammunition on the protected squad. Use a clear firing lane, keep away from its explosive death, and check the tracker rather than counting every distant explosion as your own kill. There is no need to turn the whole city into one continuous firefight just to make progress.
The original Xbox 360 game's **Good Samaritan** is a different achievement. Its relevant restriction is not killing Engineers during the Rookie's Mombasa Streets investigation, with the award occurring when Data Hive begins. It is not an MCC achievement. Anyone working on the original list should keep that run separate from an Engineer-killing sweep and avoid careless explosive damage around them.
**Recordings: count collected logs, not somebody else's map numbers**
MCC awards individual audio-log achievements as your collection grows and **Record Store Owner** for all thirty. Twenty-nine are in the city; the final one requires the special Data Hive encounter unlocked by those twenty-nine.
A guide's numbered map is a route through physical terminals. The story entries arrive in sequence. Seeing that your next missing recording is number twenty-nine does not identify one universal street corner called “log twenty-nine.”
Keep a location checklist as well as your in-game recording count. If you die shortly after a pickup, check that it remains registered before moving into another district. Halo Support’s known-issues documentation dated July 12, 2023 describes audio-log progress being lost after death; that is a documented caution, not a fresh test of the current build.
That's the useful split here: investigate the clues to advance the story, inspect the cereal box, approach sleeping Grunts carefully, and treat recordings as a citywide collection rather than a mission-completion reward.
