**ODST: getting the last audio log without losing track of the other 29**
**MCC guide. Data Hive and Sadie's Story spoilers below.**
The final recording is not another telephone hidden somewhere in New Mombasa. It is behind a special encounter in Data Hive, and the first twenty-nine recordings are what make that encounter available.
That distinction matters. Finding the correct room in a video is not enough if your own collection state has not unlocked the route. Before loading Data Hive, open the audio database and check the entries. If you have twenty-eight, finish the city search first.
**Set up the handoff from the city**
For a solo cleanup, collect the city recordings in solo play and use Save and Quit after confirming your progress. Then load Data Hive on Easy. Easy is a practical recommendation for keeping the escort alive, not a special difficulty requirement for the recording.
Do not casually switch between solo and co-op collection sessions and assume every state will carry across in the way you expect. If you're collecting with others, plan the city recordings and Data Hive as one organized session, with everyone checking their own recorded progress. The visible presence of a terminal in another player's game is not proof that your account has the same collection state.
Make a note of your final city count before beginning. If the next encounter behaves differently than expected, that is the first useful fact to recheck.
**Keep the police officer alive**
During Data Hive, you meet an NMPD officer while moving through the underground data facility. Continue with him until the second data-stack descent toward sublevel nine.
With the city recordings collected, the officer accompanies you into the lower section instead of remaining behind. Protect him through the fighting that follows. The room you need is opened through his part of the encounter; letting him die is not a shortcut to it.
Use the corridor's cover, deal with the Brutes ahead, and avoid firing explosives through the officer's position. Don't sprint so far forward that you lose track of him, but don't stand behind him expecting him to clear the whole route either.
When he says he needs to check something and opens the side room, follow him inside rather than continuing toward the ordinary mission objective. This is the detour you came for.
**Search the cold room**
The officer's behavior inside connects the main campaign to the story you've been hearing in the recordings. Let the scene develop and be ready for him to become hostile.
The recording is at the wall terminal in the room, described in the location guide as the northwest wall. Use VISR and inspect the room's wall-mounted device rather than searching the body or waiting for an automatic award from the confrontation.
Interact with the terminal and check the database again. In MCC, **Audiophile** is the individual thirtieth-recording achievement. **Record Store Owner** is the separate award for having all thirty. An original Xbox 360 guide may use Audiophile for the whole collection, so make sure you are reading the correct list before deciding which notification is missing.
Finish the encounter safely and allow your progress to save. There is no benefit in immediately forcing a restart just because an achievement notification appeared.
**If the officer does not take the special route**
First, distinguish a missing prerequisite from a failed interaction:
- If the database shows fewer than twenty-nine city entries, return to the city collection.
- If the officer dies before the side room is opened, recover the encounter from an appropriate earlier point or replay the mission.
- If you changed session type, recheck the collection state for the session you are actually playing.
- If the room opens but the recording is absent from your list, check the terminal interaction rather than assuming the dialogue itself collected it.
Do not delete your save, unlink accounts, or erase campaign progress as a first response. Those actions can create much more work without establishing what went wrong.
**If all thirty are listed but Record Store Owner is missing**
Halo Support has a published troubleshooting article specifically for this achievement. It reports cases where the award failed and recommends checking the in-game list; if an entry was missed, its proposed recovery is a co-op campaign collection pass that includes the missing recording.
Treat that as documented troubleshooting, not a guarantee of a current fix for every player. The separate ODST known-issues page, dated July 12, 2023 for build 1.3232.0, also describes collection progress being lost after death. Neither page is evidence that every current installation has those problems.
Before repeating a full city sweep, write down what is actually wrong: missing database entry, missing individual achievement, or only the all-thirty achievement. That makes a support report useful and prevents a lot of aimless replaying.
One more thing: an official reference to collecting logs “in order” does not turn a fan map's marker numbers into fixed story locations. Keep the same physical-route checklist, verify each pickup in your own database, and make sure you reach Data Hive with the required collection intact.
