**Halo 3 in MCC: plan LASO and the three-hour Legendary run separately**
*Campaign spoilers. Planning guide, not a claim that an untested route guarantees an unlock.*
These two challenges get lumped together because both involve Legendary. They really shouldn't. Devastating asks you to finish quickly. LASO asks you to survive the game's preset collection of restrictions. Making your speedrun harder than necessary doesn't earn you extra credit.
**Devastating: improve a complete set of Legendary times**
**Devastating requires a combined Legendary campaign time below three hours.** It uses your best recorded mission times; you do not need to play the whole campaign in one uninterrupted sitting.
Start by getting a complete Legendary campaign record. Then write down the recorded time for each of the nine playable missions. Add the times yourself. Don't mix in an Easy personal best simply because it is the fastest number you can find in the menu.
The regular par times total **2 hours 40 minutes**. That makes them a useful starting target, not a requirement that every mission individually beat its par. A faster Floodgate can give you breathing room on a slower Ark, provided the combined qualifying total stays below three hours.
For a clean attempt, choose solo or co-op and maintain a complete record in that mode. Community reports conflict about exactly how mixed solo/co-op best times and completion records interact. I would not promise that a spreadsheet assembled from whichever mode was faster will necessarily match the achievement tracker. You also do not need to complete the entire campaign twice just because both modes exist.
**Work on the expensive mistakes first**
A useful improvement order is:
1. **Navigation mistakes.** Learn where Cortana's multilevel room exits and which route opens after its reactor objective.
2. **Repeated vehicle losses.** Keeping a useful vehicle alive on The Ark or The Covenant can save more time than taking a risky shortcut.
3. **Unnecessary fighting.** Know which defenses actually gate progression and which enemies you can safely leave behind.
4. **Late failures.** Practice the final Warthog route so a good mission isn't thrown away on the last stretch.
Compare the time a new tactic saves with how often it fails. A difficult skip that saves twenty seconds but regularly costs a mission restart isn't automatically an improvement for your run.
Leave skull collection, terminal reading, and Easter eggs out of the timed attempts. Use ordinary Legendary settings unless a specific achievement-safe modifier is part of a route you've deliberately checked. There is no reason to turn on Iron for Devastating.
**Finish each timed mission in one session**
Halo Support specifically warns that quitting and resuming a single mission across sessions can cause speedrunning and scoring achievement issues. Its recommendation is to finish those attempts in one session.
That means one **mission** at a time—not all three hours of campaign progress in one evening. Take breaks between completed missions. Don't build a plan around old save-and-quit tricks that may not preserve or register time the way a guide claims.
After an improvement, check that the new Legendary result actually recorded. Keep the result screen or your own notes if you are troubleshooting a missing unlock.
**A Preference for Pain: launch the real playlist**
For Halo 3's LASO achievement, select the game's **LASO Campaign playlist**. Let that playlist supply its difficulty and skull configuration. Manually selecting Legendary and turning on a collection of skulls in ordinary mission selection is not the same progress record.
It supports solo and co-op. Choose your team before starting and use the playlist's resume function when continuing. Verify that the completed entries are being recorded; don't casually restart the playlist when you mean to resume it.
The playlist is a preset challenge. Newer optional modifiers such as Acrophobia are not permission to replace its settings, and picking up thirteen skull objects is not the LASO achievement.
**The restrictions change your priorities**
**Iron** is the big difference between modes: solo death normally restarts the mission, while a co-op death returns the team to its checkpoint. Co-op is not ordinary respawn-enabled campaign play with extra people standing around.
**Black Eye** means you cannot rely on normal passive shield recovery. Plan opportunities to recover shields through melee without charging into the middle of a group. A manageable isolated target is useful; a crowd of armored enemies is not a health station.
**Blind** takes away the normal HUD information. Learn the route and your weapon behavior before adding that restriction. **Famine** makes careless ammunition use expensive, and **Tilt** changes which weapons work well against particular defenses. Pay attention to the actual effects instead of treating every stronger enemy as a cue to empty another magazine.
In co-op, agree who is carrying key weapons and who is watching the next threat. Warn teammates before throwing explosives near them or moving into a new area. A preventable friendly-fire death can undo everyone's progress.
**Don't combine every difficult objective**
Annual's four-player Ghost finish is its own challenge. Who Needs Them? is its own vehicle restriction. Neither needs to become an extra rule in a LASO attempt.
Get through the preset playlist, verify its completion, and let **A Preference for Pain** be the objective. For Devastating, use the recorded Legendary times and improve the biggest remaining losses. Keeping those plans separate is much more useful than trying to make one campaign run prove everything at once.
