Halo 3: Tsavo Highway — the Warthog helps, but it isn't going to solve every fight
**The Master Chief Collection. Mission spoilers. Conventional route, with Normal, Heroic and Legendary advice.**
After Crow's Nest, getting outside with a Warthog feels like a relief. Just don't mistake having a vehicle for being safe. Tsavo Highway keeps putting fuel rods, snipers and heavier vehicles in places where an impatient driver can lose the whole crew.
This route gets you through the mission without forcing a vehicle over the broken bridge or relying on a speedrun skip. Stop and fight on foot when that gives you a better chance. You can get another vehicle later.
**Leave the garage and pick your fights**
Open the way out, take the turret-equipped Warthog and let the Marines board before driving through the tunnels. The troop carrier is another option, especially with well-armed passengers, but the turret Warthog is the simpler starting choice for this route.
Outside, follow the path to the right. Give your gunner a steady view of the enemies instead of steering in tight circles around them. Check the elevated lookout positions for Jackals and stop behind cover if you need to remove one with your own rifle.
At the crashed Phantom position, deal with the fuel-rod carrier and turret operators before driving into the middle. A passenger can use a recovered fuel rod gun, but you still need to put the vehicle where that passenger has a useful shot.
**Normal:** you have more freedom to keep moving while the gunner clears infantry.
**Heroic and Legendary:** park out of the main firing lane, pick off the dangerous weapon operators, then bring the Warthog forward. Trying to run over a fuel-rod Brute who's already aiming at you is not a dependable plan.
**The small dam and the first vehicle barrier**
At the fortified wall/dam position, check the elevated snipers and Shade turrets. The route continues around the **left side** of the structure. You don't need to find a door through its face.
Beyond it, you'll reach Marines fighting near the highway and a shielded tunnel. Remove the fuel-rod threat, clear the nearby infantry and deal with the Choppers without letting them ram you head-on. Your goal is the tunnel, but first watch for the Drones coming out of it.
The energy barrier blocks vehicles, **not Chief on foot**. Once the approach is safe, get out, walk through and destroy its power unit on the far side. Then bring the Warthog through. Repeatedly driving into the shield won't wear it down.
**Tough Luck stop:** after this tunnel, when you emerge beside the highway and the large pipe, take the skull detour before continuing to the broken bridge. There is no terminal on this mission.
**Cross the broken bridge on foot**
Drive along the highway until the damaged span and barriers stop the ordinary vehicle route. Leave the Warthog and cross on foot, using the remaining bridge structure and route onward.
The bridge can be crossed with vehicles using other approaches, but none of that is required here. Don't spend half an hour trying to force the bumper through the barriers because you've assumed the Warthog must accompany you to the end.
Continue to the Marines fighting around the buildings. Clear the initial enemies and the jump-pack Brutes before settling into the larger defense.
**The Brute reinforcement fight**
This is the section to prepare for before the Phantoms unload. Find the battle rifle ammunition, sniper supplies and cover around the buildings. The raised roadway gives a view over the fight, but it becomes less comfortable when enemies can reach its sides or a Wraith starts firing at it.
Use cover while dropships are overhead. Once their troops are on the ground, prioritize fuel-rod carriers and Brutes working toward your flank. Break protection, then finish exposed heads rather than spending expensive ammunition on every remaining point of health.
On Legendary, keep changing your firing angle within cover. One doorway is convenient until multiple enemies are aiming at it. If you use the turret, put it down when you need your normal weapons, grenades or better movement.
Trip mines can help control an approach, but don't scatter them around the feet of the Marines you're defending. Know where you placed them before retreating.
A Wraith joins this encounter; don't rely on it waiting politely until every infantry fight is finished. Remove its gunner and attack from cover. A charged plasma pistol shot can interrupt its movement, but **that is not a promise its weapons have stopped working**. Boarding is an option once you've made an approach safe, not a reason to run through the entire remaining enemy force.
Destroy or neutralize the Wraith and finish the resistance. The resupply Pelicans bring vehicles and Marines. Take a fresh turret Warthog if your original ride is still back at the bridge.
**Take the side route, not the blocked highway tunnel**
The main tunnel ahead is closed. Follow the uphill trail the Wraith came from and use the smaller passage that returns you to the highway route.
Clear the sniper and Chopper threats along that approach. Keep enough room to reverse rather than driving into a narrow spot with an enemy vehicle directly in front of you. Beyond the short tunnel, another group and available Choppers lead into the final large vehicle battlefield.
**The Wraith battlefield**
Don't drop into the open ground and immediately circle the central hill. That can expose you to Choppers on one side and mortar fire from another.
Work from the near side first. Remove the threats that can directly hit your current position, then create an opening toward the road rising onto the hill. Chopper cannons, your Warthog's gunner and recovered heavy weapons are all usable; none makes you immune to return fire.
Separate the Wraith engagements where possible. Move between attacks to avoid mortar impacts, and don't approach a surviving gunner as though destroying the tank's driver is the only concern. More enemy vehicles can arrive, so check the battlefield again before treating a newly quiet lane as cleared permanently.
The useful destination is the **elevated road**, not a requirement to hunt every vehicle indefinitely. Once you have a safe route up, continue toward the roadblocks.
**Clear the final blockade and open the road to Voi**
Work through the smaller roadblock, then stop before the final defended tunnel approach. Pick off the elevated opposition and turret, and give the Chieftain carrying the plasma cannon your attention before closing the distance.
Use the slope for cover and avoid driving straight among Brutes who can disable your vehicle with equipment. When the remaining position is manageable, move up on foot if that is safer.
At the last energy barrier, cross to its power unit and destroy it. This is the road-opening objective that finishes the mission. There isn't a Scarab boss waiting behind it; that belongs to the next part of the campaign.
