Halo 3: which version you're playing matters more than you might think Before we get into Halo 3 mission by mission, there's something worth clearing up. An old Xbox 360 guide can show you the right room, the right enemy and the right skull, and still give you the wrong achievement advice for The Master Chief Collection. The campaign is familiar. The checklist isn't identical. And the shutdown of the old services doesn't mean you can't play the original anymore. Here's how I'd separate everything so you're not spending an evening chasing something your version doesn't actually award. **Original Halo 3 and MCC are separate achievement lists** **Original Xbox 360 Halo 3:** this is the original game's achievement list, including its later additions. Playing that version through backward compatibility on a newer Xbox does not turn it into MCC. **Halo 3 inside The Master Chief Collection:** this uses MCC's achievements and progression. There are individual mission awards, collectibles, unusual challenges, playlists and campaign records that aren't simply a copy of the 360 list. MCC's Halo 3 isn't an Anniversary campaign with a button to swap between two sets of graphics. Don't waste time looking for the Halo 2-style graphics toggle when a guide tells you to inspect something. Also, Halo 3: ODST is a different campaign with its own targets, not the next chapter of this checklist. For these guides, MCC is the main version. Original-release differences will be called out where they actually matter. **What the Xbox 360 shutdown did—and didn't—remove** Legacy Halo services changed on **January 13, 2022**. For original Halo 3, matchmaking-dependent achievements are no longer obtainable through the retired matchmaking service. Backward compatibility does not restore that service. But the campaign remains playable. Campaign achievements that don't depend on those servers remain available. The official support breakdown also lists Custom Games, Forge, split-screen, LAN and online squads among the surviving Halo 3 features. It is not accurate to describe every kind of online play, or every achievement, as gone. If an old achievement specifically says ranked matchmaking, don't substitute a private match and expect it to count. Conversely, don't abandon a campaign collectible because somebody said “the servers shut down.” Check what that particular achievement needs. MCC uses different services and was not included in that shutdown. **Xbox and PC: plan your group before the difficult runs** MCC Halo 3 supports online campaign co-op with up to four players. Xbox has two-player campaign split-screen; four people on one screen is a multiplayer feature, not four-player campaign split-screen. PC does not have native split-screen support. There is an important improvement over Halo 2 here: **MCC Halo 3 supports Xbox-to-PC campaign co-op.** That feature was added in April 2022, initially labeled experimental. That doesn't mean every other campaign in MCC has the same compatibility. Use your normal Xbox profile consistently. MCC's achievement progress is shared between Xbox consoles and the Xbox app on PC; signing into Steam with the matching Xbox profile also grants the corresponding Steam achievements. Original Xbox 360 Halo 3 awards remain a different list. Don't change platforms halfway through a mission or an unfinished playlist assuming the checkpoint follows you. Completed missions and finished playlists carry across; mid-mission saves and partial playlist progress have transfer restrictions. Finish the run where you started it when you can. **The collectible numbers to put on your checklist** **Campaign skulls: 13.** Those are the campaign pickups for **Witch Doctor**. Plan collection on Normal or higher, starting the relevant mission from the beginning. Some skulls have additional encounter or puzzle conditions; knowing the location isn't always enough. MCC already lets you select skull modifiers in the menu. That isn't the same as finding their physical pickups. The original game's gold-versus-silver achievement rules also aren't MCC's rules: MCC awards achievements for both categories. **Multiplayer map skulls: six more, tracked separately.** Assembly, Orbital, Sandbox, Citadel, Heretic and Longshore have their own pickup achievements. Don't put these on the campaign's 13-skull list or assume finishing the story covers them. **MCC terminal checklist: eight activations.** There are seven regular Forerunner terminals: three on The Ark, three on The Covenant and one on the final mission, Halo. MCC also requires the hidden Cortana terminal for **No Stone Unturned**, with its own achievement, **The Coin's Fault**. That's an easy distinction to miss. The original 360 **Marathon Man** achievement is for the seven regular terminals. A guide written around that requirement can leave an MCC player one short. There is also **Whispers Across the Galaxy**, for reading the Mendicant Bias message at the final regular terminal on Legendary. It is a different read of an existing terminal, not a ninth location. Give the terminal time to change and read through its pages instead of opening it and immediately backing away. **A sensible order for the achievement runs** **First, play through and collect.** Normal is a useful starting point: you can follow the story, learn the fights and work on campaign skulls without making every detour a Legendary recovery exercise. Keep an actual list of which pickups registered. “I stood near it” isn't the same as claiming it. **Then clean up the individual challenges.** Some ask you to leave vehicles alone, find something tucked away or keep an enemy alive long enough to hear dialogue. Read those before starting the mission. They can work directly against the quickest or easiest route through an encounter. **Treat score and speed as separate jobs.** A speed route skips enemies; a score route needs worthwhile kills and a healthy final multiplier. Trying to do both while collecting everything is a good way to turn a straightforward run into a frustrating one. Use the current MCC thresholds, not an old original-game score guide. **Leave the demanding campaign goals until the routes feel familiar.** **Devastating** asks for the Legendary campaign in under three hours using qualifying recorded mission times; it doesn't require one uninterrupted evening. Keep track of the actual Legendary records rather than your best Easy times. The LASO target, **A Preference for Pain**, requires the game's designated Halo 3 LASO Campaign playlist—not a manually assembled approximation. **Organize Annual separately.** It calls for the final mission, Halo, in four-player Legendary co-op, with Iron enabled and everyone in Ghosts. That's a specific group challenge, not something a solo Legendary clear silently covers. Arrange the group and settings before starting. **Keep the record useful** For each mission, I'd track completion difficulty, skulls, terminals, special challenges, par time and par score in separate boxes. Add a separate section for playlists, Annual and multiplayer-map collectibles. A finished campaign is a great start, but it isn't automatically a completed Halo 3 achievement list. On PC, use the normal achievement-enabled game rather than a modded or anti-cheat-disabled launch. Read modifier warnings before a record attempt, and check the result afterward. If something doesn't unlock immediately, compare the actual requirement with your settings before repeating the entire campaign. That's the plan: enjoy the game, keep the versions straight, and make each replay accomplish something specific instead of trying to force everything into one miserable run.
