Halo 2: Sacred Icon — through the wall and out to the Covenant camp *Halo 2: Anniversary in The Master Chief Collection. Mission spoilers. Conventional route, not a speedrun.* Sacred Icon has a simple navigation trick that the game keeps asking you to repeat: find the piston, open it and descend through the hole. Once you recognize those mechanisms, the interior makes considerably more sense. The difficulty is doing that while Sentinels keep appearing and, later, while the Flood are climbing over everything around you. You're the Arbiter again. The Grunts, Jackals and Elites supporting you are friendly. Don't shoot them because the previous two missions trained you to clear every Covenant silhouette you saw. **1. Open the first piston** On the starting platform, look for the large rectangular mechanism hanging down toward the floor. Its illuminated panels distinguish it from ordinary architecture. Strike or shoot an active panel until the mechanism retracts, then drop into the opening it exposes. This is the route forward, not a machine you need to climb on top of. Repeat that process through the following piston-linked rooms. A plasma weapon is convenient for opening panels from a little distance. You can use melee when it's safe to approach and you want to conserve ammunition. Don't pour a whole magazine into the surrounding frame; aim at the responsive panel. The little maintenance machines aren't the same threat as the armed Sentinels. Keep your attention on things actually attacking you and on the next passage. **2. Cross the Sentinel rooms** The interior opens into rooms with bridges, gaps and a beam of light running overhead. Follow the connected floor route beneath that light toward the next piston rather than dropping into any dark gap that looks vaguely like a shaft. Sentinels emerge from wall emitters. If you keep killing the flying units while leaving an active emitter intact, replacements can keep arriving. Destroy an emitter that's preventing you from crossing safely, or move through once you have a clear route. You don't have to turn every room into a prolonged cleanup operation. Friendly Covenant join this stretch. Check who you're aiming at before firing through the fight. A Sentinel beam can be useful once one drops, but don't step into several enemy beams just to collect it. Continue through the descending passages toward the power source Tartarus identifies. The early Arbiter toy detour is separate from the main route; this walkthrough follows the objective instead of covering that climb. **3. Release the power source** The larger power-source chamber contains an Enforcer: a much bigger flying machine with frontal shields. If you fight it directly, don't stand in front pouring ammunition into protected armor. Use the room's cover, reposition with camouflage and attack exposed parts from the side or behind. Retreat to recover rather than staying underneath it after your shields disappear. The objective is **four plug locks, then the central control**. The locks resemble the pistons you've already been opening. Disengage all four, checking each has actually responded, then activate the holographic control that becomes available on the platform. Defeating the Enforcer first is one approach, not a required boss kill before the controls work. If you can reach and operate the locks safely, activating the platform resolves the machinery's defense and starts the crossing. On Legendary, choose the approach your current position supports rather than forcing a sprint through fire just because a faster route exists. Ride the moving platform across. Use the breathing room to reload and check your weapons before the next area. **4. Enter the Flood-infested side** The far side has another Enforcer and a fight involving Flood and Sentinels. The onward opening is toward the front-left of the arrival area. Removing the Enforcer helps open the route without spending a long time surviving the crossfire. Attack from cover and make use of the moments when it is occupied with other enemies. Don't confuse the enemy factions fighting one another with a guarantee they'll ignore you. Once the passage opens, enter it and work around to the next piston. Camouflage can help you cross the exposed space. Activate it from a protected position and move with a destination in mind rather than waiting for your shields to fail in the center of the fight. Open the piston and descend. You're now into the darker, Flood-infested portion of the wall. **5. Fight through the dark passages** Find a shotgun or Sentinel beam when the route supplies one. The shotgun handles combat forms that get close; the beam lets you attack without constantly committing to melee range. Keep track of ammunition rather than taking a weapon just because its type sounds useful. On Normal, you can keep moving fairly briskly if you clear the attackers in your path. On Heroic and Legendary, stop at corners and let the nearest enemies come into a manageable angle. Running past a combat form can leave it following you into the next group. Watch what the Flood are carrying. An armed combat form across a room is not the same problem as an infection form near your feet. Deal with the dangerous firing angle before stepping out to gather ammunition. Destroy intact bodies when you have room to do it, but don't turn cleanup into tunnel vision. Your immediate survival takes priority over attacking a corpse while a live enemy is moving beside you. **6. Follow the exterior ledges upward** The route brings you onto an exposed section where Enforcers and Flood are fighting around the wall. The onward path here involves climbing the nearby ledges to the next platform and piston. Don't keep descending simply because earlier rooms sent you down. Stay on the built surfaces and identify the next landing before jumping. Let the distant battle distract the enemies, but clear anything that has a direct shot at the ledge you're using. After the next piston descent, the bridge-and-light layout returns, now filled with Flood haze. You haven't restarted the level. Follow the accessible route under the overhead light, check the ground for useful ammunition and find the next piston. **Mythic detour:** stop in this foggy interior before moving on through another piston. The entrance crates lead up to a landing; the skull is in the third dark alcove on the right. Follow the companion collectible guide on Legendary. This stop comes after the exposed Enforcer-area ledges, not in the earlier Flood corridors. Keep repeating the mechanism-and-passage route through the remaining platforms. The shapes are familiar; the enemies and visibility are different. **7. Collect the terminal before the final descent** Near the end of the interior route, there is a quiet piston room containing dead Flood rather than another active battle. This is the stop for **Terminal 8**. Look behind the partition on the right and use Anniversary graphics to interact with it. Don't mistake a piston panel for the collectible terminal. One opens the route; the other records the terminal. If you're collecting, make the stop before dropping farther down toward the snowy exterior. Continue through the remaining piston passages, clearing enemies around the openings before committing to the drops. Check your weapons before leaving the wall: the next stretch ends in a defense rather than another simple corridor exit. **8. Cross to your allies** Outside in the snow, friendly Elites arrive to support you. Take the bridge across the chasm and fight through the Flood on the far side. You don't need a sword-flight trick or a risky leap to reach the next area. Keep carrier forms away from your feet and avoid throwing grenades into the Elites helping you. If the sword is part of your loadout, use it against an isolated combat form rather than lunging into a cluster of enemies and explosions. Find the small rocky passage leading onward to the Covenant camp. This first exterior area isn't the final defense itself, so don't spend forever searching it for an imaginary last enemy if the passage ahead is open. **9. Defend the camp** Join Rtas and the Covenant defenders, then hold against the arriving Flood waves. Keep moving between useful cover and watch the approaches rather than aiming in one direction until something hits you from behind. A plasma turret can help against enemies in its firing lane, but leave it when you need to move. Flood can use unattended turrets, so watch for one becoming an enemy position. Destroying a turret you're not going to use is an option, not a requirement to finish the level. Use the quieter moments between attacks to reload, recover and check the motion tracker. When the defense is over, the mission transitions into Quarantine Zone. If the ending doesn't trigger and the camp seems empty, look for a surviving Flood unit around the perimeter or down in a recess. Don't fire blindly toward a red dot through your allies. Find the actual target, finish the fight and let the transition occur.
