Halo 2: Cairo Station — getting through the first real fight **Halo 2: Anniversary in The Master Chief Collection. Mission and ending spoilers below. Conventional route, not a speedrun or LASO route.** Cairo Station has a pretty straightforward objective: keep the Covenant from blowing up the station. Actually getting through those hangars on Legendary is another matter. This is where getting comfortable with the battle rifle and plasma pistol pays off, because you are going to have a lot of Elites between you and that bomb. First, the mission names. **The Heretic** is the opening cinematic. **The Armory** is the playable calibration tutorial. **Cairo Station** follows those and is the first combat mission. A walkthrough calling Cairo “mission one” usually means the first fighting level, not that the other two entries have disappeared. If you're playing from the beginning, finish the Armory's look controls and shield test, then follow Johnson to the lift and tram. Cairo begins after the ceremony. You don't need to replay the tutorial every time you select Cairo for another attempt. **Before the first door blows** Take a battle rifle from the weapon racks downstairs. An SMG makes a perfectly reasonable second gun on Normal. Once an enemy drops a plasma pistol, I would make room for it on Heroic or Legendary. The combination is simple: hit an Elite with a charged plasma-pistol shot, switch to the battle rifle, then land the headshot after its shield breaks. Don't fire the rifle into a fully shielded Elite and expect the same result. If the charged shot misses, get back behind cover and try again. Join the defenders, but stand away from the door the Covenant are cutting through. Let the breach happen before moving forward. Use the barricades to separate yourself from the enemies coming through; watch the upper openings as well as the main doorway. Dual SMGs are fun here on Normal. On Legendary, being able to use a grenade and then immediately make a precise shot is usually more useful than keeping both hands occupied. After the opening defense, go through the breached doorway, down the stairs and through the adjoining rooms. Clear the enemies coming out of the side door before climbing toward the hangars. Check the racks rather than entering the next fight with half a magazine. **First hangar: keep the upper position** You enter above the boarding craft. The Covenant come out in waves, so killing the first group doesn't finish the room. A manageable approach is to stay on the entry catwalk and use the large crate to your right as cover. Peek out for one target, take the shot, then get behind it again. Pick off exposed Grunts and use the plasma-pistol combination on Elites. Throw grenades toward the boarding exit when enemies are grouped there, not at the crate you're using for shelter. On Normal, dropping down can help you finish scattered survivors. On Legendary, I would stay up until the dangerous enemies are gone. There's no benefit in voluntarily giving up cover because the first wave looked easy. Watch your plasma pistol's remaining charge. Swap for a fresh one when the floor is reasonably safe; don't wait until an Elite is already pushing you. Finish the remaining boarders, and watch the far-side door near the Pelican. Another group breaks through before you leave. The Malta's destruction is your story cue that this is getting worse. Restock before following the newly opened route to the second hangar. **Second hangar: don't rush the floor** Deal with the Grunts on the mounted plasma guns before trying to move freely through the room. You're fighting more boarding waves here, without that same comfortable opening balcony position. Use a crate near the entrance as your starting shelter. Look for one firing angle at a time. If two Elites can hit you from different directions, move back rather than trying to win both exchanges at once. **Heroic:** grenades can help break up a wave, but leave yourself a retreat before stepping out to throw one. **Legendary:** prioritize the shield break and follow-up headshot. Dual-wielding Elites can tear through you while you're still deciding which target to shoot. Finish one, recharge, then deal with the next. Don't assume a sword makes charging the entire room a good idea. After the Athens is destroyed, the objective changes to finding Cairo's bomb. Take the opened lower route toward MAC storage. If progress seems stuck, check for a surviving enemy instead of trying every locked door in the hangar. **Storage, the armory and the commons** Clear the stairs below the hangar. The next passage introduces cloaked Elites: use the flashlight, watch for their distortion and avoid walking straight between the two approaches. Climb into the armory where the Master Gunnery Sergeant is fighting. Defeat the Elites and take the opportunity to replenish ammunition. His scripted death isn't a failed rescue objective. This is also the area for Cairo's terminal; the skull detour is in the following commons. Those are separate stops covered in the collectible guide. Don't start a timed run and then discover halfway through that you wanted both. Continue through the commons, clearing the mounted guns and enemies across the room. Use the available walls and doorways instead of standing in the middle looking up at a turret. The stairs lead onward through security and toward the tram/docking area. Help Johnson and Miranda clear the approach to In Amber Clad. Deal with the next Covenant group coming from the other docking passage, then continue through that passage toward the exterior section. **First spacewalk and the freight lift** The flying Elites are a different target from the ones you've been fighting indoors. Their movement makes a charged plasma shot and quick headshot less dependable at long range. Watch where they settle, and shoot from cover rather than chasing them into the open. Outside, cross toward the next airlock. The marked shipping route helps orient you. Use the large containers as shelter, and don't turn every jump into a long float across an exposed area. Inside, Drones attack around the freight-lift chamber. Back up to cover, aim at the ones landing on surfaces and avoid spraying your entire rifle supply after a moving target. Clear the Covenant on the freight platform, then use its control near the window end to travel down. The lift doesn't move just because you've stared at it long enough. Look for the control panel if you've cleared the area and nothing is happening. **Second exterior section and fire control** Through the lower airlock, deal with the Rangers and the turret covering the exterior route. Keep the doorway and low barriers available while you work on them. Follow the moving MAC magazine loader toward the fire-control entrance. Watch its movement before committing to a jump. More flying Elites defend the approach; clear the landing rather than jumping into their fire. There is no need for a grenade-jump shortcut on this route. Take the final lift into the bomb room. Before moving out, reload both weapons and check your grenades. **The bomb room** Several Elites are guarding the bomb. Stay near the entrance cover and dismantle the group instead of sprinting down the middle. Use grenades to pressure enemies behind cover, then finish exposed Elites with the shield-break combination. If one side becomes dangerous, change your angle rather than repeatedly stepping into the same stream of plasma. On Legendary, a close-range shotgun rush can go wrong before you even reach the second target. Once the defenders are dead, approach the bomb to trigger the ending. You aren't looking for a wire-cutting minigame or a separate defuse button. Cairo's MCC par time is **15 minutes**, and its par score is **14,000**. Treat those as later targets if you're learning the level. Getting through the hangars consistently is more useful preparation than trying to force a fast run while you're still figuring out where the next wave comes from.
