Halo CE in MCC: an achievement plan that doesn't make every run harder than it needs to be Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in The Master Chief Collection. Some mission and ending spoilers. Trying to collect everything, finish quickly, keep your score up and avoid dying in the same run is a good way to turn a game you enjoy into a miserable evening. Some of those goals fit together. Others actively get in each other's way. For CE, I would separate the campaign into a normal completion pass, a collection cleanup, specific mission challenges, and then the serious timing and LASO work. This is a practical campaign roadmap, not a claim that these steps cover every MCC multiplayer achievement or every unusual Easter egg. **1. Finish the campaign and check what actually registered** There are ten CE missions, from The Pillar of Autumn through The Maw. Each has its own completion achievement, and the full-campaign difficulty achievements are: - **Greenhorn:** finish every mission on Easy. - **Birth of a Spartan:** finish every mission on Normal. - **Believe in a Hero:** finish every mission on Heroic. - **Living Legend:** finish every mission on Legendary. Higher-difficulty completion counts toward the lower difficulty awards. That doesn't mean you need to start on Legendary. If you are learning the routes, a Normal or Heroic playthrough gives you room to understand the encounters before every mistake becomes expensive. Use the mission-completion records to check for gaps. Finishing The Maw isn't enough if an earlier level never registered at the required difficulty. Keep a simple ten-row checklist with difficulty, terminal, skulls, par time and par score as separate columns. A tick in one column doesn't prove anything about the others. During each mission, switch between classic and Anniversary graphics at least once, then finish it. Doing that across the campaign works toward **Before and After**. It is an easy habit to build while playing normally, rather than remembering at the end that you never changed graphics on half the levels. For a clean first completion, leave optional skull modifiers off. That is a straightforward way to avoid mixing achievement restrictions into the run before you need them. **2. Count collectibles correctly: 13 skulls, 10 terminals** **Headhunter** requires the thirteen hidden CE skulls. It is not fourteen, and the larger number of skull options in MCC's menu is not a pickup checklist. In mission order, those thirteen are: - The Pillar of Autumn: Iron. - Halo: Mythic and Boom. - Truth and Reconciliation: Foreign. - The Silent Cartographer: Famine and Bandanna. - Assault on the Control Room: Fog and Malfunction. - 343 Guilty Spark: Recession. - The Library: Black Eye and Eye Patch. - Two Betrayals: Piñata. - Keyes: no hidden skull. - The Maw: Grunt Birthday Party. Each mission also has one terminal. Activate all ten for **Dear Diary...**; each terminal and hidden skull has an individual achievement as well. These pickups can be collected on Easy. Use Anniversary graphics, walk over the hidden skull, and interact with the terminal. Having a skull available as a modifier is not the same as claiming its collectible. Don't let a difficult jump ruin a good difficulty run. Mark the missing item and return specifically for it. The Library's final skull, the late Two Betrayals skull and The Maw's escape-run skull are especially worth planning before you reach the end-of-mission pressure. **3. Treat playlists as their own progress** **A Fine Choice** asks for one completed CE playlist. **Excellent Taste** asks for three **different** CE playlists. Choose them from CE's playlist menu and finish each playlist through that mode. Playing a similar set of missions through ordinary mission selection isn't the same thing. If you leave midway, resume the playlist rather than restarting its next mission separately and assuming the playlist record followed you. A completed Legendary campaign also doesn't magically mark every Easy, Normal and Heroic playlist as completed. Difficulty awards and individual playlist records are different jobs. You can use a full-campaign playlist for a planned playthrough, then choose shorter CE playlists for the remaining count. Check which playlists you have already finished before replaying one. Cross-game playlists have their own awards; don't substitute one for a CE-specific playlist without checking its category. **4. Pick a mission challenge before you load in** Once the routes are familiar, choose a condition you can deliberately protect. These are useful examples, not every mission feat: - **Close Quarters Combat:** finish Truth and Reconciliation with at least four sniper rounds left. Keep the rifle and watch the remaining ammunition instead of spending the last rounds casually. - **Pacifist:** complete The Silent Cartographer without firing, throwing grenades, using melee, dying or restarting. That needs a dedicated approach, not an ordinary combat run with a few enemies skipped. - **That Just Happened:** finish The Library on Heroic or Legendary without dying. In co-op, plan for both players to survive; your partner's death is not a harmless shortcut. - **Look Out for the Little Guys:** finish Two Betrayals on **Legendary** without killing Grunts. Old Xbox 360 guidance says Heroic or higher, but MCC's requirement is Legendary. - **Leave It Where It Lay:** finish Two Betrayals on Legendary without picking up another weapon. Decide on that before an automatic weapon swap spoils the attempt. - **This Side Up:** complete The Maw's Warthog ride without being forcibly ejected. The wording is not simply “don't voluntarily leave the vehicle.” Don't combine the Two Betrayals restrictions just because they share a level unless you are comfortable with both. Removing your weapon options while trying to avoid collateral damage is a much bigger task than either checklist entry sounds on its own. **5. Separate a score run from a fast run** **Did Somebody Say...** requires beating par time on all ten CE missions. **Overachiever** requires beating par score on all ten. Each mission has its own awards underneath those campaign-wide goals. For timing, unnecessary fights and collectible detours cost you. For scoring, bypassing almost everything can leave you short even if you finish quickly. Start the mission with the appropriate score/time display and check the final result rather than judging success from the middle of the run. Read the warning when enabling skulls. A modifier that makes travel or ammunition easier can invalidate the achievement you are chasing. In particular, do not build par-score or par-time attempts around zero-multiplier assistance. **Goat Roped** and **Like a Fine Wine** deserve separate preparation: the former is CE's Legendary campaign under-three-hours goal; the latter specifically requires the CE LASO playlist. Neither is a requirement for simply enjoying or finishing this campaign. **6. Co-op and missing unlocks** CE supports two-player campaign co-op. On Xbox, that includes local split-screen; PC MCC does not offer native split-screen. Don't assume MCC's multiplayer cross-play means an Xbox player and a PC player can run CE's campaign together—the CE campaign does not support that pairing. If an unlock doesn't appear, first check the recorded completion and the exact condition. Halo Support also warns that skull settings and achievement-service connectivity can affect progress. Preserve what the results screen shows and follow the official troubleshooting guidance before replaying an entire campaign on a guess. The useful target is a checklist you trust. Know which mission needs another visit, know why you are loading it, and give that attempt one clear job.
