Halo CE in MCC: getting through Two Betrayals
Mission 8, Combat Evolved Anniversary in The Master Chief Collection. Story and mission spoilers.
This is where knowing the route through Assault on the Control Room can get you into trouble. You're heading back through much of it, but the fights have changed, the Flood are involved, and three stops above the canyon floor matter more than simply reaching the other end.
The route is **control room → first generator → interior rooms and twin bridges → second generator → underground passage → final canyon → third generator**. This is a conventional completion route, not a shortcut or par-time run. It also isn't a route for the no-Grunt-kills or no-new-weapons achievements.
**Get out of the control room**
Deal with the opening Sentinels using the plasma pistol rather than wasting shotgun shells at awkward distances. Take cover when their beams settle on you. Once the room is safe, this is your opportunity to collect its terminal before opening the exit.
Use the door controls and work through the Covenant ahead. When enemies are already fighting each other, don't immediately walk into the middle. Watch the fight from cover, then deal with whoever threatens your path.
Outside, descend the pyramid by its ramps. Check the projecting tower near the top for the human weapon and health supplies. The bottom is defended, including a Wraith, and the parked Banshee is your next objective. Clear a workable approach before committing to the cockpit. On Heroic or Legendary, inspect the approach from cover instead of making a desperate sprint across the whole clearing.
**First generator: expect to lose your shields**
Fly to the marked elevated platform. Remove the landing area's defenders, set the Banshee down where you can get back into it, and enter.
**Walk into the central energy beam.** In this version, Cortana uses your shields to overload it. You aren't looking for three destructible conduits from Campaign Evolved.
Plan your retreat before touching the beam: shields go down, and Sentinels arrive. Move out of the exposed center, let your shields recover, and use a plasma weapon against them. Return to your Banshee once the exit is manageable. Don't park so close to the edge that getting back aboard becomes another problem.
**Across the bridges**
Fly down to the land bridge and enter the door Cortana indicates. From here, the route returns through the interior on foot. The floor arrows were laid out for the earlier trip; don't automatically follow them forward now.
Continue through the connected rooms to the twin bridges. Cross the first, work through the rooms on the other side, then cross the other bridge. After the subsequent interior section, take the elevator down and continue outside.
There are fights between the Covenant and Flood along the way, plus attacks from the other bridge and the air. Before crossing exposed ground, look across as well as ahead. A doorway you just cleared is useful fallback cover; keep track of it instead of backing blindly toward an edge.
Keep a shotgun ready for nearby combat forms and a weapon that can reach distant threats. If a Flood form has a rocket launcher, stop treating it like another charging melee enemy. Break its line of sight and deal with it before concentrating on the smaller enemies around it.
**Reach the second generator**
The next snowy area leads through the canyon toward more Banshees. Ground vehicles can help, but don't confuse moving faster with having a safe route. There are enemy vehicles and infantry between you and the next flight.
Pass the overturned Warthog and continue toward the defended area with the Banshees. Use the available supplies before leaving the ground. Once airborne, deal with hostile aircraft and the elevated defenses before landing at the generator marker.
Inside, clear the immediate Flood threat before entering the beam. Reload, identify cover, and only then overload it. More Flood arrive afterward, including dangerous armed forms. A full shotgun doesn't help if you spend the first exposed seconds reloading your other weapon.
Fight your way back outside and take a Banshee toward the underground passage. Make sure Cortana has confirmed this generator is disabled before leaving; reaching the next canyon isn't a substitute for completing the objective.
**Through the broken door**
The tunnel contains another battle. Hang back enough to see what survives, particularly rocket-carrying Flood. In confined space, a Banshee gives you less room to dodge than it did outside.
At the malfunctioning blast door, use the control and **continue on foot through the opening**. Don't force a vehicle through it. That is unnecessary for this route and can cause progression trouble.
Work across the interior bridge, clear the advancing Flood, then open the far door and follow the passage outside. Check corners before moving through them. If you retreat, retreat along ground you have actually checked rather than trading one unknown threat for another.
**Final canyon and third generator**
The last stretch has several separate battles. Don't spend everything on the first one: you still need to reach the Covenant position containing the Banshees. Check the supply cave along the route and replenish before approaching the final defenses.
Watch both factions, remove immediate heavy-weapon threats, and clear a route to an intact aircraft. Avoid throwing explosives directly into the parked Banshees you're trying to use. You need transport, not a completely empty battlefield at any cost.
**Collecting Piñata? Make that flight before finishing the final generator.** Otherwise, follow the objective marker back up to its elevated entrance.
Destroy the Sentinels guarding the approach and those inside, then enter the last beam. This finishes the mission and leads into the transition to Keyes. There isn't another ground evacuation to find afterward.
On higher difficulties, the biggest practical adjustment is to stop rushing the vulnerable moments: entering a cockpit, crossing a bridge, and stepping out of a generator with no shields. Prepare for those before triggering them. It saves a lot more time than gambling on one more shot while everything is firing at you.
