Halo CE in MCC: The Library walkthrough
Mission spoilers. For Combat Evolved Anniversary inside The Master Chief Collection, not Campaign Evolved.
The Library is four floors of Flood, locked doors and rooms that look frustratingly familiar. The useful way to track your progress is by the three lifts between floors, not by trying to remember every corner.
Follow Guilty Spark when he's leading. When he leaves to operate a door, pay attention to whether he told you to wait or continue. A locked security door isn't something you need to shoot open, and his ability to fly through a vent doesn't mean that's your route too.
This is a conventional completion guide. Collectibles, the no-death challenge and timed attempts have their own instructions.
**First floor: get equipped and learn the attacks**
Move forward cautiously from the starting area. Carrier forms—the swollen ones—explode and release infection forms. Shoot them from a useful distance, not after you've backed yourself against one.
Their explosions can damage nearby Flood, but explosions also move bodies and loose grenades. Be careful about detonating a carrier on a pile of fallen enemies beside you. A chain reaction can turn a seemingly cleared patch of floor into another hazard.
Look for a shotgun among the early weapon drops. It gives you a strong close-range answer to combat forms. Keep a second weapon for enemies farther down the corridor; the pistol is useful for aimed shots, while the assault rifle can handle smaller targets and close groups. Choose based on what ammunition you actually have.
The Black Eye skull is an early vent detour before your first entry into the main Index chamber. If you're collecting it, stop before following Spark through that entrance.
Continue along the main corridor and through the rotating doorway into the central chamber. The Index is above you; you aren't supposed to jump down the center to reach it.
At the large security door, Spark leaves to open the route. Hold the area against the Flood until you can proceed. Keep checking the vents and the space behind you. Facing the locked door for the entire fight leaves you watching the one direction that isn't helping.
Once the way opens, continue through the corridors. Move past completed encounters rather than hunting every last infection form, but don't run through a group that can surround you at the next turn. Sentinels eventually join the fight. Let them help; they are not targets in this mission.
Reach the first large lift and ride to the second floor.
**Second floor: door holds, lower passages and rocket carriers**
Check the area immediately after leaving the lift. Don't assume the short walk away from an elevator is automatically safe.
Spark again leaves to work on the security system. Pick a position with room to retreat and a view of the approaches. A corner can protect one side, but standing directly beneath an active Flood vent defeats the purpose.
When the door opens, follow the ordinary outer route. You don't need to climb over the inner walls to skip sections. The floor arrows help identify the onward path, including ramps down into passages below the main floor.
**Watch for combat forms carrying rocket launchers.** They are a different priority from a carrier slowly walking toward you. Check distant enemies before stepping into a long sightline. If you see a launcher, use cover and deal with that threat before walking the rest of the group into close range.
Don't stand next to a wall assuming it protects you from a rocket that hits the wall beside you. Break the firing angle and move away from the likely impact point.
After the next major doorway, the route takes you down a ramp into a lower passage and back up on the far side. Clear the exit before committing to the open floor above it. You can retreat into the passage when needed, but check that nothing is following from behind.
Continue through the next corridor encounters toward the second lift. Search the fallen weapons between fights, not while a combat form is already swinging at you. A useful weapon with an empty magazine is still a reload away from being useful.
Ride up to the third floor.
**Third floor: keep the route and the collectible separate**
The chapter change after the second lift tells you you've made real progress, even if the architecture still looks familiar. Follow the connected corridor, lower passage and open areas onward with Spark and the Sentinels.
Terminal 7 is on this floor, across the central Index chamber from the normal approach. If you're collecting it, use the separate location guide when you reach that chamber. Don't mistake the visible terminal across the gap for an instruction to leap across the shaft.
There is another security-door hold on this floor. Reload before the next group arrives and check where you can move if the near side becomes crowded. A spot that worked for the previous wave isn't necessarily safe after enemies start entering from another vent.
When you have to choose targets, deal with immediate threats first: the combat form already closing on you, an armed enemy with a clear shot, or a carrier about to explode nearby. Shooting something harmless at the far end of the room while ignoring the thing beside you is an easy mistake when the screen is busy.
Use grenades against separated groups with space between you and the blast. A stuck combat form running back toward you is not a controlled explosion.
After the door opens, continue with the route to the third lift. That takes you to the fourth and final floor; there are four floors, not three.
**Fourth floor: reach the Index without ending your collectible run early**
Fight through the final corridors toward the Index platform. Keep using the same habits rather than rushing because the finish feels close: check the approach, preserve room to move and reload before the next turn.
If you're collecting Eye Patch, **do not walk straight into the center of the Index platform**. The skull is a detour around the far side, and approaching the objective triggers the ending. Take the collection route first.
For an ordinary clear, reach the Index platform after dealing with the enemies blocking your approach. The concluding sequence takes you down to retrieve it and ends the mission. You don't need to search for a fourth upward lift or retrace the corridors afterward.
**What helps on Heroic and Legendary**
Keep the shotgun supplied, but don't spend shells on distant enemies just because it's in your hands. A second weapon with useful range lets you begin a fight before the Flood reach you.
Reload during breaks. If you're interrupted, move and handle the immediate threat rather than remaining exposed until every shell is loaded.
Don't assume a fallen combat form is permanently out of the fight. Check your surroundings when crossing bodies to collect ammunition, and don't stop in a heap of weapons while enemies are still approaching.
Health packs and power-ups appear in side recesses and lower areas. Notice them as you pass. If you need to return for one, clear the way back instead of sprinting blindly into a previous spawn area.
Most importantly, keep enough space to change your position. The Library gets much harder when you spend every fight trapped against the nearest wall. Clear a workable path, recover when you can, and move when Spark opens the next section. You don't have to turn every doorway into a last stand.
