Halo CE in MCC: getting through The Pillar of Autumn Mission-one spoilers. Written for Combat Evolved Anniversary inside The Master Chief Collection, not the 2026 Campaign Evolved remake or Reach's similarly named mission. The first mission gives you a fairly simple job: get to Captain Keyes, take Cortana and get off the ship. The problem is all the Covenant standing between those instructions and the lifeboat. This is a normal route through the level, without speedrun skips or glitches. Start the mission from the beginning with skulls off. Normal gives you more room to learn; Heroic and Legendary punish standing in the open much more quickly. The route stays the same, but the way you handle a doorway matters a lot more. **Before moving: decide what you’re attempting** For an ordinary clear, use health kits and overshields when you need them. They’re there to help. For a Legendary challenge run, there are two separate restrictions you may choose to add: - **Walk It Off:** finish this mission on Legendary without taking a health kit. - **Overshields are for Sissies:** finish it on Legendary without taking an overshield. You can attempt both together, but you do not have to. If you’re learning Legendary, I’d get comfortable with the encounters before making the pickups off-limits. Walking over one by accident is enough to spoil the relevant restriction. **1. Leave cryo and reach the bridge** Follow the opening instructions that appear for your selected difficulty. Before leaving the starting cryo room, collect Iron if you want it; the separate collectible guide covers the exact spot. You do not need to enable that skull to collect it. Follow the crewman out. After the explosion blocks the way, turn back and jump across the pipes to take the other route. Continue through the connecting rooms and crouch beneath the partly raised hatch. You don’t have a usable weapon yet. Keep moving past the scripted fighting instead of trying to solve every battle in the hallway. Look for the open route and green door panels; red panels mark doors you can’t use. A Marine will offer to lead you to the bridge. Follow him to Keyes. The terminal is on the bridge, so this is the other collectible stop. Approach Keyes for the scene when you’re ready. Afterward, leave the bridge and continue until Chief has the pistol ready and you meet the first Grunts. **2. Clear the first Grunts and the mess hall** Use the pistol on the Grunts ahead, then pick up the assault rifle as you reach the larger mess-hall fight. Don’t discard the pistol just because the rifle looks more substantial. The pistol is extremely useful for accurate shots down these corridors. **Normal:** work from the entrance, remove the nearby Grunts, and move forward with the Marines once the immediate pressure is down. Reload before crossing into the next part of the room. **Heroic:** use the doorway and furniture to break incoming fire. Get rid of exposed Grunts so they aren’t shooting at you while you concentrate on an Elite. Avoid walking into the middle of the room with enemies on both sides. **Legendary:** keep the pistol and pick up a Covenant plasma weapon when one becomes available. Plasma is useful against an Elite’s shield; switch to the pistol to finish an exposed target. A charged plasma-pistol shot followed by a headshot is an option, but don’t stand exposed while you prepare it. If your shield is nearly gone, fall back first. The Marines help by drawing attention, but don’t treat them as a permanent wall between you and the enemy. Clear the room, recover ammunition and replace a low-battery plasma weapon before leaving through the far side. **3. Fight through the boarding sections** Continue through the corridors to the places where Covenant boarding craft have attached to the ship. When a breach opens, don’t stand directly in front of it. Let enemies come into your line of fire from a position with cover. A grenade into a tightly grouped boarding party can do a lot of work. Make sure the throw clears the doorway, then move away from the blast. A grenade that catches the frame and lands beside you is considerably less helpful. On a normal completion run, check the attached boarding craft for overshields after clearing the enemies. On the no-overshield challenge, stay away from those pickups entirely. Keep moving along the open corridors. When Marines are trading fire with Covenant down a passage, check the adjoining route before pushing straight through the gunfire. The connecting halls can give you another angle on enemies concentrating on the Marines. For Heroic and Legendary, finish one target rather than spreading a little damage over every Elite. If an Elite gets away and its shield recovers, you may have to do that work again. Use cover, keep your own shield intact, and advance after the immediate group is dealt with. **4. Get through the stair room** The room with stairs and an upper landing is a place to slow down. You can take fire from more than one height, and moving into the middle makes it harder to keep track of the shooters. Work toward the upper route while watching the landing and its doors. Reinforcements can come through above you. Use a grenade if they bunch in the opening, then finish survivors rather than chasing one enemy down into the middle of the room. On Normal, you have more freedom to move with the fight. On Heroic and Legendary, use the upper doorway or nearby corner as a place to withdraw, recharge and re-enter. Don’t stay on the stairs trading fire simply because you’ve already started climbing them. Leave by the upper exit. In the following long passages, use the pistol to remove visible Grunts before closing the distance. Keep something solid between you and the rest while your shield recharges. **5. Follow Cortana into maintenance** When Cortana directs you toward maintenance, follow the navigation marker into the narrow access passage. Use the flashlight if you need it. Her motion-tracker explanation is also useful: check for nearby movement before walking out of an opening. At the damaged door that blocks the way, use your melee attack to knock it open. This isn’t a puzzle requiring a hidden switch. The maintenance routes provide openings onto the fighting outside. If enemies are waiting at one exit, don’t repeatedly step out into the same shots. Use the passage to approach from another opening where possible, while keeping track of which way continues toward the objective. You’ll pass the cryo-bay area again and reach corridors being damaged by explosions. Stay back from the blasts. In the scorched area, the way onward is another small maintenance entrance near the fire, not through the flames themselves. This next tunnel has Grunts inside, so don’t assume every maintenance passage is empty. **6. Clear the last opposition and reach the lifeboat** Follow the passage back into the corridors and toward the grenade supply. Use the available frag grenades against groups ahead, but throw from a position where they won’t bounce straight back off nearby cover. For a careful Legendary clear, the supply lets you soften the final group before exposing yourself. Throw, wait for the blast, check the result, and repeat where needed. Don’t rush forward while your own grenade is still about to explode. Finish the enemies still blocking the escape route. When Cortana points out the remaining lifeboat, move to it and allow the evacuation scene to play. Let the game complete the transition rather than quitting as soon as you think you’ve reached the end. **What this run can accomplish** Finishing gives progress toward campaign completion and the MCC mission achievement, **Pillar of Autumn**. The Legendary restrictions above are separate targets, and the Iron skull and bridge terminal have their own unlocks. There are also par-time and par-score achievements, but this is not a par-time speedrun route. Exploring, collecting and carefully clearing rooms are different priorities from racing through. Likewise, a score attempt needs its own difficulty and modifier plan. Learn the layout first, then give those runs their own attention. If a fight keeps ending the same way, change where you’re standing before changing everything else. Back up, let the shield return, reload and check the next angle. In these corridors, a doorway you already cleared is often more useful than another few seconds of firing in the open.
