Which version of the first Halo are we talking about? Version guide; no major story spoilers. Availability and feature information checked November 1, 2026. Before I start putting together guides for the first Halo, we need to sort out the names. Because Combat Evolved, Combat Evolved Anniversary and Campaign Evolved are different releases, and a guide for one can give you some very confusing instructions if you’re playing another. There’s also The Master Chief Collection in the middle of all this. So here’s the straightforward version. **Halo: Combat Evolved — the original game** This is the game that launched on the original Xbox in 2001. The original campaign, the original presentation, and the multiplayer that came with that release. The Windows and Mac versions came later. Those are older ports, separate from buying Halo through The Master Chief Collection today. If somebody says they’re using “Halo PC,” it’s worth finding out whether they mean that original PC release or MCC. There’s another similar name, Halo Custom Edition, which belongs to the older PC side of the series. Don’t confuse that with Combat Evolved Anniversary or Campaign Evolved either. The original Xbox release also predates Xbox achievements. So if you’re following an achievement checklist for the original campaign, it’s actually a checklist for a later release of that campaign. That distinction matters before you start looking for something your version never had. **Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary — the 2011 Xbox 360 release** Anniversary remastered the campaign for the game’s tenth anniversary. One of its big features is being able to switch between the updated visuals and the classic presentation. It also adds things such as terminals, collectible skulls and an achievement list. The multiplayer side is where people can get tripped up. The 2011 release’s multiplayer content was built around Halo: Reach, with remade maps. It wasn’t simply the original Xbox multiplayer running with the Anniversary campaign’s graphics. That’s important if someone is buying an old copy because they want one particular experience. The name on the box doesn’t explain all of that by itself. **Combat Evolved Anniversary inside The Master Chief Collection** This is the version many Xbox and PC players will be using now. It’s part of MCC, alongside Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, ODST, Reach and Halo 4. You still have the campaign’s classic/remastered graphics switch, but you’re playing within MCC’s setup, updates and achievement system. MCC also includes classic Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer. That’s a different situation from the Reach-based multiplayer attached to the 2011 Anniversary release. For guides, I’ll label this version as MCC. It needs its own achievement instructions rather than having the Xbox 360 list pasted over it. Co-op also needs a little attention before you make plans with someone. MCC supports split-screen on Xbox consoles, but not on PC. Having two controllers plugged into your PC doesn’t give you the same built-in split-screen option. And don’t assume that a multiplayer cross-play feature automatically applies to every campaign. **Halo: Campaign Evolved — the separate remake released in 2026** This is its own game on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5. It released July 28, 2026. It isn’t an Anniversary graphics update inside MCC. It remakes the original campaign and adds three missions set before it, bringing the campaign total to thirteen. It also changes and expands the available weapons, vehicles and gameplay. There’s Campaign Remix, additional skulls, and a separate set of achievements and PlayStation trophies. Co-op supports up to four players online across those platforms. Xbox Series X|S and PS5 also have two-player split-screen. The cross-platform setup uses a linked Microsoft account, so that’s something to have ready before everybody sits down to play. If you’re using an old Anniversary collectible route, don’t assume it covers Campaign Evolved. The mission name being familiar doesn’t make every collectible, challenge or route identical. **And a warning about old online guides** Some Xbox 360 Halo services were retired in January 2022. Playing the old Xbox 360 software on a newer console through backward compatibility doesn’t bring those services back. MCC uses different services and wasn’t affected by that particular shutdown. That doesn’t mean the old campaigns stopped working, and it doesn’t mean every achievement disappeared. It means an old guide promising a server-dependent unlock needs to be checked before you spend an evening chasing it. So if you want the first campaign as part of the larger collection, look at MCC. If you specifically want the new remake, expanded missions and its cross-platform co-op, that’s Campaign Evolved. If you’re revisiting an original disc or the Xbox 360 Anniversary release, use instructions written for that edition. I’ll keep those labels on the guides. Nobody should need to get halfway through a walkthrough before discovering they’re playing a different version of the game.
