SCP-173: The Sculpture - The Original
SCP-173 gives you a very simple rule to live by: keep looking at it.
It's a hostile sculpture made from concrete and rebar. While it's directly observed, it can't move. Break that line of sight and it can attack, with the file describing fatal neck injuries and strangulation.
That means blinking becomes part of the danger. When people enter its enclosure, the procedures require a group, with two people maintaining observation and warning one another before they blink. Routine cleaning puts them back in the room with it again.
The scraping sounds heard from the empty enclosure are treated as normal. Its origin remains unknown. The entry supplies enough information to understand the immediate problem without explaining everything about the thing causing it.
It's easy to see how much tension that one rule can create. Looking is normally how you assess a threat. Here, looking is also what prevents the threat from reaching you. The moment you need information about something else in the room, your attention becomes a limited resource.
Then ordinary human limitations take over. Eyes get tired. People misunderstand one another. Someone might assume another person is watching when they aren't. You don't need an elaborate new power every time you want a scene to become dangerous.
The group requirement also makes survival depend on trust. Each person needs the others to do something small and specific, consistently, without a gap. That's a very different kind of pressure from giving everyone a weapon and telling them to fight.
For horror writing, a clear rule can sometimes do more than an unexplained collection of abilities. Once the reader understands the rule, they start noticing opportunities for it to fail. A distraction becomes meaningful before anything actually happens.
There's also value in keeping the description spare. The entry doesn't have to tell you exactly how to feel about every detail. It establishes a routine people must follow, then lets you imagine having to carry it out.
Going into a room to clean it should be an ordinary job. Having to coordinate every blink while you do it makes the same job terrifying.
