SCP-163: An Old Castaway
SCP-163 gives us an alien stranded somewhere it was never meant to live, surrounded by people who are struggling to understand even its simplest needs.
Miners found its crashed spacecraft buried in ancient rock in the Andes. Protective technology had preserved what was inside. Some equipment was stolen before the Foundation arrived, leaving the people trying to help with an incomplete picture of how any of it worked.
Its body, senses, and chemistry are different enough that ordinary human surroundings can make it ill. The Foundation provides filtered air, suitable lighting, and a protective suit. Staff can spend time playing games with it or helping with repairs. Its life-support equipment is deliberately left alone rather than dismantled for research while it still needs it.
The painting experiment is where the entry becomes especially personal. Given suitable materials, it paints unfamiliar plants and animals, becomes distressed, and knocks the picture down. But when someone tries to remove the supplies, it objects. The following day, it paints again.
You can read that as homesickness or grief, although the researchers don't have a complete translation of what it's trying to say. That uncertainty matters. We can recognize distress without pretending we understand the whole life behind it.
Alien stories often make communication convenient. A translator appears, or everyone eventually speaks the same language, and the difficult part disappears. This one spends time on the work involved in understanding another being. Even recognizing a face isn't something both sides do in the same way.
That makes kindness important in a very practical sense. You don't need a shared vocabulary to notice that someone is struggling or to leave them the tools they want to use. Small accommodations can say more about a relationship than a long speech.
There's room for a much larger history here, but the strongest scene stays small: someone far from home making a picture, being overwhelmed by it, and choosing to make another one anyway. The people watching can't fully explain it. They can at least make sure the paints don't run out.
