Gears of War 4
Gears of War 4 brings the story forward to a different generation, and Marcus's dynamic with his son is one of the things I love about the series.
JD Fenix is at the center of this one with Kait and Del. Marcus is still there, but now you also see him as somebody's father. That's a different situation from simply having him lead the same squad through another war.
You've followed Marcus through the original games. You know some of what he's been through. Then you get to watch him and JD deal with each other, and that history is part of it. I like that the series kept him involved while giving the younger characters room to have their own story.
The village attack and the missing people pull JD, Kait, and Del into something they don't fully understand at the beginning. They're trying to find the people they care about while figuring out what this new enemy actually is. That gives the game a way to bring you back into the world without starting with everybody already knowing everything about the threat.
The DeeBees also change what you're shooting at, and the Windflares make the surroundings part of the danger. You're still using cover, but now you have these storms affecting the fight around you. Loose objects and environmental hazards can be something to use against an enemy or something you need to get away from.
The close-cover moves are another change. Being on opposite sides of a barrier doesn't always mean you're safely separated anymore. You can pull an enemy over cover and follow it with a knife execution. The game gives you more ways to turn that distance between you and somebody else into an opening.
And Horde goes further with classes, skills, and the Fabricator. You have more decisions about how the team is going to set up and what each person is doing. A good weapon matters, but so does the way everyone is working together.
What keeps me interested in Gears, though, is the combination of all of that with the characters. I love the gameplay, but I also want to see where the story goes. Marcus and JD are a big part of that for me. The series has enough history by this point that bringing a son into Marcus's life changes more than just the name of the character you're controlling.
