Gears of War 3 Gears of War 3 has some of the moments that make this series so hard to forget. By this point you've been through a lot with Marcus and Dom, and that history matters. Heavy spoilers for Gears of War 3 from here. Dom's death is something I still have a lot of feelings about. I wasn't expecting to lose him like that. He sacrifices himself so the rest of the squad can get out of Mercy, and I understand what the scene is showing. But I still felt like there should have been another way out of that situation. That doesn't take away what he did for them. It's my reaction to losing the character. I wanted him to make it through. After everything that happened to him, I didn't want that to be where his story stopped. And Marcus has to keep going without him. That's a huge part of the weight behind it. Dom was there from the beginning. You aren't just losing somebody who appeared for a mission and disappeared again. You're losing one of the people who made that squad what it was. The story is also bringing Marcus back to his father and the possibility of ending the war. So much of the game is about trying to reach that point while the people around them are still being lost. You can get to an ending without getting back everything it cost to reach it. That's the kind of thing I mean when I say I love the twists and turns in Gears. I like getting into a game's story and its characters. This series gives me plenty of both, and some of those scenes have affected me more than I expected from a game built around such brutal combat. There is a lot to the gameplay side too. Gears 3 expanded the campaign to four-player co-op. Horde added fortifications, and Beast let you play the other side as the Locust. Those are different ways of using the enemies and combat that you already know rather than just running through the campaign again. The Retro Lancer and the chainsaw Lancer are worth separating as well. They aren't the same weapon with a different name. One has a bayonet charge, and the other has the chainsaw. They change how you approach close combat, and the difference matters when you're deciding what to carry. But even with all of that, Dom is one of the first things that comes to mind when I think about Gears 3. The weapons and modes give you a lot to play. The characters are what make so much of it stick with me.
