Original Gears of War: weapons and when to use them
Original campaign, with the same core weapon families in Ultimate Edition/Reloaded. Exact multiplayer balance and reload bonuses are version-dependent; these are roles and trade-offs, not a claim that every release has identical damage.
The chainsaw is a big part of what gives Gears that raw, hands-on feel. But the Lancer isn't the answer to every situation. What matters is where the enemy is, what else is shooting at you, and what you're giving up to carry that weapon.
Lancer: the dependable automatic rifle for medium distance. Its chainsaw can finish an eligible nearby enemy, but you have to reach them and commit to the animation. Good for isolated targets; a bad reason to run into a whole group. Don't confuse this chainsaw with the Retro Lancer's bayonet charge in later games.
Gnasher: strong close-range damage. Let enemies get into its useful range rather than spending shells across a courtyard. The trade-off is obvious: the closer you need to be, the more dangerous a missed shot becomes.
Longshot: precision and distance. Line up the headshot from cover, then get safe while reloading. It is powerful when you can control the sightline, awkward when enemies are already crowding you.
Hammer of Dawn: for the encounters that give you satellite support and a usable view of the sky. The targeting delay matters, and it cannot solve an indoor fight where support is unavailable. When the game puts it in your path, check what you are about to face before dropping it.

Hammerburst: the original game's burst-fire rifle, not the later games' exact version. Useful when you can place controlled bursts and collect ammunition from Drones. It doesn't give you the Lancer's chainsaw option, and bursts make it handle differently from holding down an automatic rifle's trigger.
Boomshot: explosive damage, particularly useful against grouped enemies or an enemy's cover position. Plan for the projectile's arc and a slow follow-up. Don't waste your limited shots firing blindly at somewhere you haven't checked.
Torque Bow: charge the shot enough to stick the explosive bolt. Good accuracy and explosive damage are the appeal; charging takes time and tells an opponent something is coming. Use cover while preparing the shot rather than standing exposed through the whole process.
Boltok: a hard-hitting revolver that rewards careful shots. Its small cylinder makes misses expensive. Useful as a precision sidearm, but it isn't a substitute for a sustained-fire weapon when several enemies are pushing you.

Snub: your lighter sidearm. It gives you a fallback when you need to keep shooting without committing another primary slot. Aim carefully rather than assuming a pistol is useless because it isn't a power weapon.
Frag grenades: useful for enemies gathered behind cover and for emergence holes. Use the trajectory preview, make sure the grenade actually reaches the opening or enemy position, and don't throw your entire supply at the first target you see. Tagging an enemy is a separate close-range action, not the same thing as a normal throw.
Smoke grenades: a multiplayer tool rather than campaign explosive damage. Breaking a sightline can help movement, but smoke doesn't make you invulnerable or remove an opponent's knowledge of where you went.
Troika: a fixed turret, not another portable weapon slot. Its firepower is useful while enemies are in its lane. The cost is committing to that location, so check your flanks and leave it when the fight moves.

A practical campaign loadout keeps a reliable rifle and then uses the other primary slot for the situation ahead. Close corridors, a distant sniper, and a big enemy outdoors are different problems. Pick the weapon for the problem instead of carrying two tools that leave you with the same weakness.
